Played for one week ~ noob questions please help!

Hi there, I have been playing for about a week, trolling boards, trying to soak up as much info as I can before I go off spouting noob questions ~ but I still have a few basic questions about this game I need answered. ( and I did use search first :P )

Question #1. Job switching and subjobs. Is it my understanding that you can switch main jobs at any time and basically start over? I know someone who is a 12war and a 10 whitemage on the same character. Is there a limit to how many main jobs you can have? And for every mainjob you have can you have a separate subjob? So if this is the case there really is no need to ever create another character unless you want to play them both at the same time ( separate accounts )

Question #2. Subjobs ~ What level do you need to be before you can start doing this? 17? And I assume it is a quest that is needed to be done to open up subjobs. That being said, what can you subjob? Any of the mainjobs? If thats the case then how are people subjobbing things like NIN/DRK/SAM etc? This is confusing me!

can these jobs/subjobs be changed at any time? What happens to your weapon skills? Armor?

Any other info that a noob like me can use? Please add!

To help with your questiosn:

There is no limit to how many different jobs you can lvl. It's possible to have every job at the lvl 75 cap if one were so inclined. On my character I have 26 mnk, 13 war, 10 thf, 10 rdm, and 12 whm.

There is a quest you can get at lvl 18 that opens up the ability to equip a subjob. You can SUB any job you have unlocked. This means any of the base jobs and any of the advanced jobs that you have completed the quest for.

You can change the jobs you have at your mog house at any time. Any equipment you had equiped that the job you switched to can't use gets unequipped and left in your inventory. As far as weapon skills, those are attached to the Weapon itself, not the job.

You can be a lvl 12 warrior and a lvl 12 RDM. If you have a 40 weapon ability as a warrior, assuming the RDM can equip that weapon then that will carry over. The only exception is with skill caps. Everyjob has a skill cap for every weapon. They are graded (A,B,C etc). Certain jobs use some weapons better than others. Example: A warrior has a A rating in Great Axe but a B rating in 1 handed swords. All this means is that the cap on the amount of skill you can build up on that weapon is lower. At lvl 12 a warrior might have a skill cap on his great axe of 45 while the skill cap of his sword might be 35.

There is no penalty for switching your job. So, let's say you start as a Monk and level it to 10, you can use the same character, switch to a White Mage, and level it to 10; then switch jobs again, etc.

And you can only have a seperate subjob for main; you can't be Monk/Monk.

You can access the subjob quest at 18, but you can aquire the items you need for it at any level. You can sub any job in the game, including the advance jobs (PLD/DRK/DRG/SAM/NIN/BST/BRD/RNG/SMN); however, you can't access the advance jobs till level 30, and each one has its own quest. Most advance jobs are better as main.

You can switch subs at anytime as well, once you completed the subjob quest. Your skills with weapons carry over to the next job as well; for example if you played Monk to level 20 and your Hand to Hand skill was 35, if you started a THF the H2H skill would be maxed out for level 1, until your THF reaches 35 in H2H, then the skill will start to raise again.

Armor has restrictions. If you're a WAR/WHM doing some soloing, you can't equip WHM garments.

Main job is what determines what equipment you can wear/use.

ill answer the best i can..

first off you can switch jobs at any time during the game by going to your mog house, at your mog house you talk to your moogle and he will switch your jobs. Let me give you an example say your a level 10 warrior and you want to level a white mage. Okay go to your mog house switch jobs, then you can play with your white mage. The great thing about this game is that you can switch back when ever you like, for instance if you didnt like your white mage any more u could switch back to your warrior and he would still be level 10 where u left him.
So there is no real reason to reroll(create another account) unless you are going to change race's.

As for sub job its simple. You do a quest at level 18 that opens up your sub job. Then again you go back to your mog house and now you can set your sub job. Sub job works as half of your main jobs level.. say your a level 20 warrior and you want to sub something lets say ninja. okay you level your ninja up to 20 now you go to your mog house set your warrior as your main and your ninja as your sub you will be level 20/10 20 warrior 10 ninja. your sub job level can not be anymore than half of your main jobs level...

When you say I can SUB any job I have unlocked ~ what do you mean by unlocked? Meaning I need to switch my thf to war, level it up, and then set it as a subjob for my thf? Am I understanding this correctly?

Or can I hit level 18, pick a subjob and then start leveling it up ( I understand that subjobs can only be 1/2 the level of the mainjob)

He was alluding to advance jobs, which need to be unlocked, and you can't access the quests till at least one of your jobs reaches 30.
