character select blank!

Hey guys, I'm trying to help my buddy setup his FFXI character, and after he downloaded CD1 from SE (his was bad), he finally got it installed, but when he tries to create a character, the screen is blank (so he tells me). I thought I'd read a post from someone with a similar problem, but couldn't find it after an hour of searching. Anyone know of this problem, and (hopefully) the solution?

I'm not sure, but I think it had to do with turning on simple character creation. (Or if its on, turning it off.) I know that probably wasn't a lot of help, heh.
