View Full Version : Important Question Concerning Comp.
Hi all,
I am currently building a comp.
I wana know what would be an exceptional choice for a graphics card.
Also could you post your comp's stats and state how well it runs FFXI. Thx:)

But they can help.
If you want, just get at least a Pentium 4 2.6GHZ, 1GB DDR RAM, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128mb) and an 80gB HDD. That would run FFXI fine.
That's basically the computer I'm getting just after Christmas anyways, with a 17" FlatScreen ThinkVision Monitor and a nice sound system with wireless keyboard/mouse.

What do you guys think? Is this good? Price-wise and quality?
In terms of quality that PC you setup would be top of the line. 3.2 Ghz, sheesh
If you have the money for it, then go for it. I don't know if you have considered the Radeon 9800XT 256MB video card. It is a little more expensive though. What do you other people out there think? You would be able to run basically anything on this PC.

might as well go with the 9800xt for the cash you are putting into the pc, its not a huge difference but 100 bucks more isnt breaking the bank neither from your setup.
btw that machine is a beast atm. only the area 51 can out run it.

my setup is like this;
Mobo: Epox EP-8RDA
CPU: Athlon 2500+ (OC'ing to 3200+)
RAM: 2*256 PC-3200 DDR, Dual Channel
VGA: NVIDIA Ti4200, 64MB, AGP 4x (yeah, i know...)
HDD: WD1000BB, 100GB, 2MB Cache, 7200RPM, ATA100
this one's running ffxi just fine w/ all options enabled/maxed.
as far as ur setup goes..., the same as previous posters. :spin:

You could get a 9600 pro for 140 bucks that will run the game really good or you could get the 9800 xt pro for 450 bucks that will run the game about as close to perfect as u can get

well think about it the way dust601 put it.,..
who has 300 bucks to waste on the difference between a 9600 and 9800 when the performance difference isn't gonna be that much better?
trust me runnin Radeon 9600 Pro and it does just fine...
i caught frame loss today got pissed off then thought oh wait... my pc's been on for over a week straight
ok, basically i tweaked a few areas. I am going to order it right now. But i want to hear some of your opinions.
Is 1500$ too much to spend? i calculated it to 1497$...
Also, and please excuse my newbness, but when you buy a new processor(retail), does it come with windows xp? Once again, plz excuse my newbness.:)

If your priority is being able to run the game fine without graphical problems, don't spend anywhere near $1500 on a computer just for this game. I'm running a P2.4 with an ATI Radeon 9000 and am running the game with everything turned on except bump mapping. The game looks great and I have no problems.
Seriously, unless you are someone who absolutely cannot live without knowing that your computer is running the game at the highest quality physically possible, you can build a computer for well under half that price and still blow the doors off FFXI.
And what's up with that RAM? 512 MB sticks from Crucial (Micron) are only $93, and that's really the best shit out there.

no it does not and 1500 is nearly 3 x what i spent on my pc that runs FFXI benchmark at 5200 low score 4500 high score...
to me it wasn't a matter of spending the money it was a matter of spending eficiantly but if i put 1500 into 1 i built it would be beyond crazy
any1 else?
Do you guys think i am going overboard? Is a gig of ram too much? sry for the newbness...

A gig of RAM is totally reasonable. Definitely not overkill, especially since Crucial is only $93 for a 512MB stick, like Hadoken mentioned. Plus you'll need 2 sticks with that setup, in order to take advantage of the dual channel DDR. Go for the gig!
I'm currently running a 9700 PRO in an Athlon 1900+ (1.6ghz) box, with 512 RAM (shoulda gone for the gig!!).
I'm gonna move up to a 3ghz P4, 1GB RAM sometime after Christmas. I'll be using that P4P800 Deluxe mobo also. I don't really see a compelling reason to move up to the 875P chipset. And I'm keeping the 9700 pro for now.
My current system runs FFXI quite well, but I do notice some occasional frame loss. Once I beef up the cpu/ram I'll be sitting pretty.
WinXP doesn't come with a cpu normally. Most retailers will include WinXP with a complete system (often whether you want it or not!!!), but not on individual cpu sales. They'll be more than happy to sell you a standalone copy though...

i'mma buy the game tomorrow and we'll see how it runs
