View Full Version : Red mage question?
I wanna have good magic and weapon attack so should i be a Red Mage.....??????
in the beginning, you will be a great melee fighter.
In later levels, you will still do ok damage against things that con easy to decent.
But past level 35-40 or so, redmage won't do very much, if any damage when in a party fighting Incredibly Tough mobs.
A melee redmage, such as Rdm/Thf is viable for soloing though, and can hold their own until very late in the game. And If you happen to have a brd or blm casting accuracy up or frost, you will hit just as much as everyone else, and do respectable dmg. (As lvl 30 rdm/thf, i hit three times for every 1 hit of a drk or drg. I do about 5-10 dmg + 7-8 elemental dmg, so you can see that quickly adds up to 50+ dmg, which is a little higher than most drk's hit for at my level, and i'm using a lvl 20 dagger!) With Decurions dagger, you can also burst off of your own skillchains! (the delay is barely low enough to be able to get the burst in) But at later levels, your dmg will drop off more and more, since the cap on EN spells is 14 :dead: ( i wish they'd change that)
For parties at later levels, you will want blm or whm sub for sure.
There is also rdm/nin. but this job combo is mostly novelty. Even with en+ swords, you won't do very much dmg compared to other melee characters, and without tons of +dex gear, you'll hit even less. It will, however, be very fun to play!
I plan on getting a lvl 15 or so nin sub just for fun, But parties will definitely like you better with a blm or whm subjob. (japanese players LOVE the rdm/blm)
Hope that helps you out! ;)

I see a lot (no, make that a LOT) of high level rdm/blm on Carbuncle.
But I don't understand why.
At least in my experience (lvl 23), RDM are terrible nukers - it isn't even worth the time outside a MB (let alone the MP, nukes are the highest MP cost spells I have, Fire costs more than Bio which I already don't use because of its cost). I only nuke for practice when soloing, or as MB - it would waste my party's time to nuke in parties. /BLM won't increase your elemental skill, and the -ga nukes are even more expensive, so what does a RDM gain from BLM sub?
Is it really worth giving up status cures, group buffs and curega just to get drain, aspir (with a RDM's, what, D-rank cap in dark magic?) and warp? Especially when about half of my PT experience is with me as primary (or only!) healer?
Or do a /blm's Magic Attack UPs and Elemental Seal make RDM/blm a worthwhile nuker at higher levels?

You basically do it for some +STATS and +MP, not for nukes. ;)
i quoting my own reply from other thread.
blm and whm both are good. some situation you'll want /blm, some situation you'll want /whm. some good thing about each sub
WHM has a lot of low level spells that rdm doesn't. at level all the way from 1rdm till 40rdm/20whm you get tons of additional spells to play with. Status correctioning, curaga and goddess sign. goddess sign works perfectly with convert while spells like poizona, prana, silena etc can safe your party more than you can imagine. Enemies that can hurt your status such as crawlers, mushrooms or skelletons using /whm is very helpful.
BLM in the other hand, their useful spells start to kick in at around 20+ (and warp at 17) from 1rdm till 30rdm you don't really get much additional useful spells to play with except drain and warp. Not until you reach 50rdm/25blm where you get frost and tracktor that are useful to the group. Frost lowers enemy's AGI so it helps your group to hit easier, everyone loves it.
BLM's best use is at 58rdm/29blm when you can get escape. that spell is a life saviour most of the time.
Personally, as a good rdm you should be ready to sub both WHM and BLM depending on the party combination. If there's no WHM, /WHM will help a lot. (BLM won't care to cure youso much when you convert. goddess sign is your best friend) while in the other hand if the group is lacking BLM, using /blm will help tons as well.

Jei's my man  he see's both points of view. Quifim burned me out from playing a whitemage. I'm going to give it a spin for a new years resolution so that I have a whm sub to work with. for just the reason he specified. convert at 40.
The rdm is a strange class. It does everything yet nothing. Nuking isn't the purpose of an rdm, its party survival. The enfeeble spells that an rdm throws out stick to the enemy like bubblegum on your shoe. At rdm 35 my enfeeble spells are sticking to an enemy while the whm's are starting to get shrugged off. Enfeeble spells are a silent killer, to proove the point go out and find a DC monster and fight it without debuffing it. Then go find a smiliar DC monster and do the full debuff on it. It was probably a lot easier and noticably so.
blm more usfull for warp and magic damage
whm curing and convert

Long time reader, first time poster.
I must say, being a RDM/BLM that I've been temped to switch to WHM many times, simply due to the fact that there is a lot more to gain from it early on. However, at about the mid 30s, BLM as a sub has really started to show it's strength.
Even as an Elvaan, putting my sword away and picking up my wand I can do 86-110 damage to ITs on a regular basis, and Elemental Seal + Drain (or pretty much anything) works wonders in tight spots. Warp is quite handy also
However, I plan on leveling WHM sometime in the future to, as Jei brought up, swap subs when necessary for certain parties. But all of you RDMs who do sub BLM.. dont ditch it right away because it seems you're getting nothing out of it.. just keep a close eye on those INT and MP boosts!
