View Full Version : Go Easy On The n00bs
I feel I must stand up for all the n00bs that everybody is bashing here.
I am a FFXI n00b myself. Well I will be when my PC arrives on Friday morning, so you could say I am a pre-n00b. You were once a n00b. Everybody was once a n00b. Thats something everybody should never forget.
We (use n00bs) don't do these things you hate on purpose, in order to make you angry and get you upset. We do them because we are learning what you already know. Somethings that seem "obvious" to you (like WHM not fighting) to some people is difficult to get to grips with, especially if this is your first MMORPG or you have only played the more traditional FF games where the healers get out big stick and and whack stuff rather hard with them. (A FF concept which has always struck me as a bit odd)
I have been playing RPGs for the best part of 15 years but I am 100% certain somebody will get upset with me, a sux0r n00b, who don't know jack because I make mistakes as I come up to speed on FFXI's gaming style.
Yes its annoying, I encountered the same kind of thing on PSO with FOmars running around pretending to be HUmar but I was always polite about it and gave advice.
Ultimatly there will be people who ignore what you say. Typically these people are releativly young gamers and have that teenage (or even pre-teenage) headstrong "I AM INVINCIBLE!" mindset. Constant pummelling from the enemies will teach the younger and less experienced generation of games players the rules soon enough. Its your judgement call wether you play with them or not. I know many excellent young players on PSO who I had no idea they were 16. They were whitty, intelligent, had common sense and were adults is every way that mattered.
So please please please, take it easy on the n00bs.
Amen. Preach it brother. Ease up on 'em folks. If they bug you just ignore 'em.

Hmmm the words n00b and sux0r are getting very annoying to here, not by the experienced ones, but the new players themselves
Just be logical, and ask for help on tough mobs..

Or go easy on the more experianced players too.
Yesterday someone was running from a Goblin Thug, and I told her to press ctr g(it was still purple so there was nothing I could do to get it off her) but she didnt, and she ran around me a few times, then finally ran off to zone and barly made it. Then I get a tell saying Thanks for nothing bitch. sweat:
Sorry I COULDNT ENGAGE IT!
while we might act like we know more then you, its probably because we do. everyone calls everyone else a n00b at one point, just take it and go on. There are plenty of very helpful people in this game, and a few bad eggs, don't get annoyed by it.:

Actually I don't think the preaching will help. Because there are certain "l33t" people that absolutely NEED to bash "n00bs". Because they are frustrated teenagers, and being good at some computer game is the highest achievement in their life. They need to have somebody to look down onto, because otherwise they don't feel they are somebody. No "r0X0r" without "suX0r".
They aren't even interested in helping newbies to learn the game and to become better. Because once the newbies got better, they wouldn't have anybody to complain about any more.

Generally speaking I don't use lee7 but in my relativly short time here lee7 seems to be an acceptable collection of contractions.
I will ease of on the leet.

Just a few things about those "No0bs"
1 - Try being a help, teach them, but if they refuse to understand after x times, their fault, not yours. And not everyone have the same IQ, try to be more helpfull to those who seem to have a hard time learning how to play.
2- Don't avoid PTing with them, its the only way they'll learn
3- refer them to THIS board. Best way to learn, i learnt like everything here
I' still a noob, but i think i have a intermediate personnality, As RDM, i can judge when to be a melee or a mage, i know how to renkei, i know what not to attack, but i have yet to learn the renkei elements to MB and still need to master my timings.
Be patient, it's the only way.

OK its "1337" come on Dux:sweat:
Heh im just kidding. I sometimes feel that these people need to learn for themsleves as i did. My friends are always /t'ing me asking "Hey where do i go to do this" or "What does this do" it is very annoying and even though they are friends of mine i want to scream. Try to keep from yelling at em even though you want to and help them best you can.

I have no problem with noobs. I have problems with stubbor stupid like a brickwall noobs.
If i tell a whitemage he'S not supposed to pull (yeah pull...... ) he should stop that.
If i tell a whm to heal before my hp drop into deep red he should do that too.
If i tell them how to set up a macro to use abilities they "could" try to do so.
If there's 3 warriors and not one uses provoke to save my sorry ass (but you seen they used provoke before) that sucks.
There's nice and lovely noobs and there'sm dumb lick fu** noobs.
Guess wich ones i don't like. :p

I am not sure, I tried this with a friend awhile ago and it didnt work, but when I was on Pan server, it worked. The /assist command seems to allow you to engage an already taken monster.
I have replayed the game with Dragoon now (up to lvl 25) and I learned a lot... There are good newbies and BAD ones.. For example, I was in a party in Qufim at level 20. We had a party of all beginning jobs except me and I told them straight off, "I've been level 20-30 in Qufim if you need any help just ask me" and went on to say that I would tell them which monsters were fast xp and which would be the death of us... First off, I told them bats = no no because their special attack kills mages and damage dealing classes with low armom. Well the first thing they pulled was a bat... It hit the WAR with the special (luckily) and did so much damage that we beat it with him have ~40 hp left and we got only 40-50 xp... I'm just, ok you see why I told you not to pull bats let's just live and learn ^^. Night comes around again. The Warrior tells us "No clippers or worms around pulling a bat". I'm just like >.< I hope no one dies. Well low and behold it goes after our mages and begins to ready it's special... The 2 WARs both are slow on the voke so I decide to voke it off. 270 dmg == dead taru... And this is only one story out of many I've got so far.
When I was a n00b I was DROOLING for advice from higher level players but now it seems as if every party ignores me... So if you are new and partying with an advanced job LISTEN to them pls... It will benifit us both.

I have nothing agains n00bs, I enjoy playing with people that are new to the game and/or MMORPGs. I will give advice, but if they don't follow, their loss.
What realy gets to me is n00bs that think they are better that experienced player and ignore the advice you give them. I was in Valkrum Dunes the other day and a nice ninja invited me in a party. She was trying to get this n00bs organised so I joined in. We had 3 war, whm, nin and me drk. After discussing fight tactics (provoke order to keep the whm alive), the first 2 fights go very bad with me and the ninja chain casting cure on the whm to keep her alive after all the war blowed their provoke and whm casted curaga to keep them alive. And then on one pull I had the wrong targed and casted paralyze on a leech. No big deal, I just said I will run to zone with the leech, carry on without me. So when I go back to the party, one of the warriors (15, with no subjob quest even) calls me and the ninja (who had been doing all the work trying to organise the group to work well) n00bs and leave the group in a middle of a pull.
One minute later he comes back and joins a group next to us and sends me a tell saying he's glad my targeting is fixed, and if we have any problems just call for help, they can handle things.
Well our group did better without him (and with 5 people only). But the rudeness of someone to call 2 people with advanced jobs n00bs when he didn't even have a subjob, could not provoke when needed to and leave the party without warning during a fight is just amazing. I'm sure with his attitude he will not make 30, he's on my and the ninja's blacklist.
And the funny thing is both me and the ninja turn out to be ex EQ veterans, heh. So many people I meet in the game are ex EQ is just amazing.

If the guy is only lvl 15 how can he be expected to have a subjob?
Also I've seen plenty of people with advanced job that don't know what they are doing...
i'm not defending him, I'm just pointing out a few holes in your statment :p
StarBurst didn't say he expected him to have a sub-job, he was using it as a reference point to how far the guy was in the game... You can have a sub-job at level 15 if you've been to 18 with another.

I try to help out when I can. When someone is being aggro by a mob i'll provoke it off of them. When I am traveling and I see a corpse on the ground, I'll usually send a tell to the person to see if he wants a raise or is he going to respawn. If he wants a raise, I'll do a search for a whm of high enough level in the area or next closest area. I'll help a person get skulls using my treasure hunter skills as a thief, they'll won't get much exp, but it usually don't take that long to find a skull for subquest with a higher level thief.
What I don't do is give out free gil or equipment to people who stand around Basktok Market shouting for free gils or equipments. I think its rude. If they'll just go out and kill some wasp and stone worms, they should make enough money to buy low level armors and weapons.
Another thing that annoys me is PTs that keeps on pulling MOBs that are to hard for them and killing half of their team or some times their entire team. It is very mana intensive for my PT's whm to keep on reviving people like that. Another type of PT that I don't like is the kind that pulls no just one, but two MOBs that are aggressive and then dying to the last man and having those MOBs attacking my PT while we are already engaged with another. It really sucks to be fighting a acrophie and in the middle of the battle, noticing that your life is in the dangerous red zone, but the acrophie isn't even attacking you. As you turn around to look, you get hit smack in the face with a rock and die with you butt sticking up. Then you notice that two giants are attacking your group with "catapults" their rock throwing attack and watching the rest of your party members drop like flies, especially the mages because they can only take one or two hits.

its mostly a misuse of the classification.
for someone who just got into the game the proper classification is newb, which is short for newbie and isnt derogatory at all.
the term n00b is used for ppl who have been playing for a while but still sux.
if you are lvl 1 - 10 and have no clue. then you = newb
if you are lvl 15 - 70 and have no clue. then you = n00b
how to prevent yourself from being a n00b:-
1) RTFM = Read The Fucking Manual, very important. Even if the only time you read the god damn thing is while you are on the toilet it still helps.
2) Do your homework. Since FFxi has been out for a while theres a truckload of information available to even the most newb of newbs to get them going in the game. Since it takes no effort and only abit of time to sort the chaff from the true grains of knowledge, not doing any research reflects very poorly on you when it comes to crunch time.
3) Do not be a stealth newb. This is the one thing that experienced players hate the most. Since most experienced players are jaded sons of bitches and the mystique of the lowbie lvls is lost to them forever, they want to get this shit over and done with ASAP so they tend to assume that everyone knows their job. IF you join these parties speak up and let the world know that you are newb. Most assholes would rather educate a newb than spend half an hour looking for a replacement and potentially risk ending up with a n00b.

I could never stress reading the manual enough. But I agree! New players are new players...and I try to treat them with the most absolute respect that I can. But there are the bad eggs out there.
I remember at about level 16, another White Mage had joined my party, showing off his newly bought spells and delcaring himself a know it all of the game. At level 16. No. And what was worse, my cures were stronger than him at this point. =)
My whole point is that anyone at any time can be a "noob". I've meet lvl 2 players with more respect and grace in learning the game then I have with lvl 25 players. It is all about the way in which you approach the game.
Noobies are not noobies for long when they study and treat those around them with respect.
