Hey everybody I have a big problem with this game and doubt it is solvable. All this nonsence about what cklass to play and what subclass to play with it and what is supposedly uber and what is just plain weak. I do not have the desire the dedicate my life to this and also want to play a class that I enjoy without spending 4 hours trying to find a group because I did not pick the right race, job and subjob. I have already made and discarded 7 characters because of hearing bad things about the thing I wanted to do with that character. Do I have to play a cookie cutter character to find groups and enjoy me time here or is it not that important? I am tired of killing noobie things all the time cause I keep restarting lol. Thanks for any input!!!

You don't realy need to discard your character to play the job you want. Just go to your moghouse and change job. The only thing you can't change is your race, so pick a race you want and just stick to one character.
As for the Job/Subjob querry, a lot of people will min/max jobs, races, etc. You can follow the crowd and be a cookiecutter character or chose to be different and play what you like. If you have enough friends or build a good reputation, you don't need to worry about not getting groups. Just keep in mind that on some occasions when fighting NMs or other similar circumstances you will want to have the best combination for you character. But during normal play I see no reason why you can't just play whatever you like.
For example my main job will be DRK. I will also level RMD, THF and SAM at the least. Usualy I will play DRK/RDM and I don't care what people say about the combination. But if necessary I will sub THF or SAM for max efficency. Also if I have time I will play NIN and SUM. Then I can have just about any crazy combination I feel like.
Best thing to do is don't follow the crowd, be yourself and it will pay of in the end. A good player is more useful than a bad player no matter the Job/Subjob combination. Remeber the game is about having fun, don't let other ruin your fun.

Dont let what other people say change your mind, be what you want.
I personally think that being what ever you want to be and enjoying it is the most important thing. All mmorpg's have them though, people that want to make the 'perfect character'. Now this is all well and good, but I'd bet that they don't have ½ the fun that others do, who just play for fun.
If you're unsure as to what to do though, you'd probably be best being a Hume 'something'. This is if you're trying to find the middle ground between what people want and what is fun to play. Sometimes it's best to go for something that isn't specialised, but average at everything. Being a Hume gives you options, they're not really bad at anything. And most people that play (of course, there's always a few assholes), will accept as Hume of just about any class into their party.

There are probably some class/subclass combinations that are completely ineffective, but as for race choice, I'm sure I wouldn't take that into account when deciding who's going to be in my group, and neither would most of the people I know. As long as a person can do a decent job, and is a nice fun person to group with, I'd rather have them than the perfect character that's boring, or a pain in the ass to group with. Who you are will do a lot more for you than what race or job you play.

you can also always form your own groups.
Thats the best way to go if you pick a non cookie class.
for example . I realized most people dun understand drg/rdm(Pre-NA). BUt after I formed sveral PT's and "proved its use especially as a puller/damager/debuffer.
example that won many fans is
if i tsuri/fish/pull.
heres what I do.
1. Go get suitable mons, go into attack mode .
2. Use dia, since dia sticks 100%. Now that im in attack mode my wyvern will attack while I disengage an drun back to the PT.
3. WAR or pally taunts then i jump it and when I land throw paralyze on it(macro'ed)
also can cure myself and weaken it further.
I pretty much use the same tactics when I play brd/rdm.
I have gotten quite good at using RDM as sub to many classes.
and people will argue till blue in the face fo rme to be cookie. but its cool when I prove them wrong . They may still not agree but you have at least showed them another way of doing something.
check out my drg/rdm faq on the drg section.
REMEMBER its up to us to prove why a combo works and in what ways it's weak.

Some of the oddest, and rarest classes are sought after by MANY groups, or at least many experienced groups. For example, the dreaded bard class. I did a /sea all brd and came up with 16 results. Believe me, having a bard in your party is VERY nice. I can't believe that job is always neglected. Brds can very well get more invited than whms.

Well I have alot of experience with online games, FF11 being like oh 7th or 8th one.
Rule 1 is to have fun first and foremost. Any friends you make will most likely not be because your class X granted some classes will get around more than others but the friendship is the person not the class.
But as for class, well FF11 makes it so you can swap as you please, currently I'm playing a Galka Red Mage which is weird to say the least but it's fun and if I don't like it ah well little visist to the Mog.
In closing just play the snobs and number junkies live in a different world anyways.
