Not entirely sure I understand the question, as it can be read different ways. So I'll just tell what I know about each class.

White Mage is pretty much needed in groups. At early levels, White Mage is the most valuable caster, no question.

At higher levels, from what I understand, you can get away with not having any White Mage primaries, but you had damn well better have a Red Mage and two other caster-types with White Mage subbed.

White Mage also makes a great starting class if you're planning on switching over to Black Mage. Make a White Mage, level up to 18, do the subjob quest, then switch over to Black Mage. It's made my life as a low-level Black Mage infinitely easier. And White Mage is the non-melee subjob, if nothing else.

Black Mage isn't quite as important to start with, but they become more and more necessary as time goes on, as the enemies get tougher and Black Magic does more and more damage. It also seems to be the preferred subjob for White Mages.

Red Mage starts out as sort of a lesser version of a White or Black Mage that people take if they can't get what they need. "We can't find a White Mage! What'll we do?" "Well, there's a Red Mage looking for a group. We can make do with that, I guess."

However, as time goes on, everyone swears that Red Mages are an absolute godsend, because they get the Refresh ability, and I think they're the only ones that get Dispel. Plus they have that nice flexibility that lets them fill in the role of healer or nuker if you can't find a Black or White Mage.

Black Mage / White Mage is as good a combo as any. It's the combo I'm using, and it's quite fun. I plan to switch back and forth between Black Mage / White Mage and White Mage / Black Mage as I level up.

And keep in mind that you can always just run back to your Mog House and change jobs if whatever class you're using doesn't work out for you. It's not like you're going to be stuck as a Black Mage for the rest of the game unless you delete your character and make a new one.

If you do go Black Mage / White Mage, though, level up White Mage first. Everyone swears that the early levels as a Black Mage are really rough; however, if you have White Mage as a subclass, those few extra hit points and magic points can be a godsend, and going into a level with your Evasion and Enfeeblement skills already maxed out is very helpful. I found some of the early levels a little tricky, but not too bad; if I didn't have whm subbed, though, they probably would have been a nightmare.
