I am having the same issue. There is no errors, it just closes to the desktop with Play Online closed and FF closed.. They are not even running anymore with no errors.

This has nothing to do with pop-ups. When it closes, there is nothing that steals focus. It just goes back to the desktop with nothing in forus.

That happened to me too. I got rid of Kazaa Lite and i'm running ad-aware 6 and um...I think maybe our problem is we have spyware/running processes that are disturbing our gameplay. I hope someone knows the problem. I don't get any error messages either, it just shuts it all down and returns to desktop.
Maybe this might help. http://housecall.antivirus.com
 I hope we can get it fixed. If anyone knows why please heelp. I even got a new graphics card and game works soo perfect...when my game and playonline doesn't completely close and I sit here staring blankly at my desktop.
If you're worried about spyware or something, try doing a search on google for Adaware. I've been using it for the past several days and it seems to help a bit to clear out crap before you start playing.

Corrupted FFXI files? What do you mean? Sounds scary...
Things i've done and yet I still have everything close out on me randomly instantly:
Bought new graphics card
Defrag
Disk Cleanup
Uninstalled/Re-installed FFXI/Playonline
Ran Ad-aware
Uninstalled Kazaa Lite
Used Housecall
Shut my computer off for a few hours
Ran Windows Update
etc
I felt like i've done everything and just don't know why everything closes out on me. I even play in low res like ps2 graphics low res and the game will still close out on me randomly. I get no error screen or anything. Maybe Square Enix has a problem and isn't saying anything and hopefully it'll be fixed during the maintenance tomorrow.
Maybe I need to run my anti virus program again and maybe it'll catch something and ANNIHILATE IT!
:(
I believe you can check for corrupted files from within the POL viewer... can't remember where exactly, I'm not at home right now. Just wander around in there and you'll eventually find it.
Fair warning... it takes a lil' bit o' time to run, so go make a sammich or something.

I think i've found my problem. In another thread in this forum, it had a number of solutions. One of them was people having problems with psx to usb adapter where they would turn off the force feedback and it worked. So far it's worked for me, i've had my game on for several hours and no disconnect. I really hope that's what solved my problem, turning off the force feedback that is.

If your running XP or Win2k you can hit ctrl-alt-del and access the task manager. Kill operations & tasks that you can determine are not essential to your system operation. Doing this you can kill spyware, virus scans, kazaa, realplayer, pretty much anything that tries to hide in your system and run unnoticed. If your using 2000 it wont tell you whats essential, but if your running XP it wont let you kill system/local tasks but will allow you to kill anything that is USER based which would be Spyware, programs, and things of the like. Doing this in combination of removing programs from the startup in msconfig (goto run and use that) can make your system run smoothly.

I have not got kicked out ever after I turned off the force feedback feature in the controller config. I think maybe that's what kept closing me to the desktop. I hope that's what did it because I don't feel like trying anymore stuff. I'm 99% positive that's what was the problem. Turned force feedback off and no close to desktop! I even had bump mapping and put really high res and running around with awesome graphics and never got kicked off. kthxbai
