Using the US client in Japan

Has anyone tried using the US client from Japan? Do you know if you are connecting straight to the servers in Japan or going from Japan-US-Japan again?

I can't see any difference in the way that either the Japan and North American clients connect to the PlayOnline server. Both of them connect to a server in Japan for registration and POL user info. The FFXI servers are all in Japan as well.
Logging into the North American client with a Japanese account has no problems and it simply works (however, you can't change your PlayOnline or Content ID information while in another country's release).
