I can't connect wirelessly to playonline, but if i disabled my wifi card and enabled regular cabled ethernet it works fine?! Any ideas on how i can get this to work wirelessly?

BTW, i get an error titled: POL - 1160

and also, my internet works fine with wireless it just won't connect to playonline

one of my friends suggested that maybe the playonline launcher uses eth0(my reg. old ethernet port) instead of eth1(which is my wireless card. Anyone know if i can change it or something. Anyone else have this problem?

do you have old devices still installed that you don't use? Even if you had 2 cards it wouldn't be a problem. Maybe it's an issue with ports not being open. Firewall stuff on a router you are using for WiFi etc.

Had a similar experience. After talking to POL support, I opened the ports on my Linksys router and it was okay... however, I had a very unstable connection. When I called Linksys, they had me try to upgrade the firmware.... Thanks to the brilliance of their tech support, I have an inoperable router sitting next to me waiting for the post office to open to go back. In short, you can get it to work, but you'll need to spend some time on the phone with tech support.

I've got DLink Wireless. No problems, but it is the only network card in my computer, you should definitely disable the wired one. I've also found the going into the services(ask a geek friend to show you) and turning off "Zero Configuration Wireless" or something like that boosts the bandwidth like a mofo.

-no old devices, can you configure different port settings for wireless and wired?(if so tell me how to config. wireless ones, i have a d-link 614+ if i didn't mention it before). And i opened all the necessary ports that playonline specified(and i opened them exclusively to my ip. The game runs like a charm when i'm wired.

-i also updated my firmware yesterday and i was sitting really close to my router and it connected to playonline but i walked into my room(about 30ft. from router, my connection usually never drops, i always use wifi from my room, like right now) and the connection dropped, but i belive i had it configured wrong, cause my connection dropped when doing normal internet activities but i fixed that so far.

-i always leave my reg. ethernet disabled when using wifi, i'll check into that zero config. thing thanks.

as of now i haven't even tried re-logging into playonline since i got new firmware and configged it correctly, i'll go try and let you know, but atm it is still not working, my next best bet will be d-link tech support. Thanks guys, later :)

Vairu,

I don't know if I can help, but I'll tell you my setup for my desktop. I'm playing on wireless and everything worked fine for me. I was even able to download all my patches in about 2 hours using my wireless connection.

Firstly, I use cable internet with a Toshiba cable modem (don't know the model number or anything, its the one that my ISP provided for free).

From there, I connect it to my Linksys Wireless Access Point/Router --> http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=35&prid=544

My Wireless router then sends its signal to my Instant Wireless USB Network Adapter --> http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?prid=435&scid=36

My USB Network Adapter is then connected to my pc.

I'm running on Win XP Pro. Everything works like a charm with my setup. I wish I could offer more technical suggestions, but I'm not an expert with these things, so I just thought I would give you my setup. Hope you get it figured out though. I wish you the best of luck. Take care.

I have or should I say "had" Wireless Internet for awhile. I didn't like it. I hooked up directly to the hub & it runs so much faster... but... as far as FFXI goes, well I get disconnected after 5 minutes when zoning into different places. I've had this problem for over 2 weeks (even with the JAP version) & nothing good has happened. I called up my ISP techs & they just rebooted my modem... nothing. I keep hearing this talk about "opening ports" how in the world do you do it? I know how to get to the Admin screen, but I'm lost from there. I have a Linksys Cable Gateway Router. I have a few things to select from...

Trigger Range OR Target Range
Start Port/End Port on both & of course TCP or UDP (Protocol) selection.

I'm not sure what to do here. I would prefer someone's advice on these boards instead of some geek tech (no offence to some of you out there) that don't understand what FFXI Online is. I'd appreciate any help provided.

start port 50000
end port 65535

other ports should already be opened, open em for both protocols, idk about trigger or target

I've done the whole port thing, unless I'm not doing it right, it doesn't work. I did it like this...

PORT TRIGGERING
Trigger Range - Start Port: 50000, End Port: 65535
Target Range - Start Port: 50000, End Port: 65535
Protocol: Both (TCP/UDP) - Enabled

Is this not right?

It has also come to my attention that it is possible that the Linksys Cable Gateway Router is causing the 4001 error! For others it may be a simple opening of ports, but me & another guy are having the exact same problem & we have the exact same Router. I'm thinking about reporting this to my ISP (Road Runner) & seeing if I can get a different kind of Cable Modem/Router.

don't contact RR they suck with issues like this(i have them too). Ok i found this site, it might help some:
Linksys Cable/Dsl router help (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/support/linksys_router_help.htm)

Also, is your linksys router your actual modem? Or did RR give you a modem that has your coaxial cable line running to it, and then outs an ethernet(cat5) to a separate router?(what i mean is do you have 2 boxes or 1 basically.) That will help me a lot more to coming up with a solution.

If you only have one box(has a coaxial running into it then has 4 ports exporting ethernet cables) then what you should do in this case is probably go to a store(best buy, maybe online store like newegg.com, or pricewatch.com) and buy a standalone cable modem(has no port blockers or anything, just a straight through de-modulating device :) ) then buy a cheap router from d-link(i have a wireless 802.11b 614+, which might be bought for like 30$ but if you don't need wireless then you can get one a hell of a lot cheaper) then i can tell you how to exactly set up your ports :).

Let me know and i'll find the best price for you, i'm happy to help out cause this game rocks and i want everyone else to enjoy it too :), good luck!

Yes, the Linksys is 1 unit... unlike my parents who have 2 units. When my parents got RR they only got the standard cable modem (the small black box) & purchased a router later. The thing is, there's a RR tech coming out here Friday because he (for some reason) needs to check out connectivity because we dropped the wireless. So if I go out n' buy the 2 units will that RR guy get me into trouble? I appreciate your help.

EDIT: I'm trying to find products that I could buy at like CompUSA or OfficeDepot. I don't want to have to order the stuff.

If this is any help...

Linksys Model: BEFCMUH4
This model can only be purchased thru a broadband cable company (like RR). I did a search for this model & nothing came up, just garbage. I've done so much over this weekend it's crazy. I have a 4 day weekend off (Thursday thru Sunday) & now it's Saturday night/Sunday morning & my problem still haunts me. There has got to be a way around this without having to go out & buy new hardware. As I sit here & try to figure out my problem, my friends are off leveling... last time I checked they were level 10ish & I'm level 5. This sucks to the max. I'd rather have a video card problem or something besides this crap!

hmmm

when the technician comes out specify to him that you'd like him to try and config your ports to the settings they should be(show him the playonline page with all the port listings) and see if he can get it to work, if not then get him to give you a modem, i'm sure he has some in his truck :).

btw, do you have 2 or more comps conected to this router/modem? If it's only one then if the tech. gives you the standalone modem then you'll be fine, but if not then get him to give you the modem(or buy one), then just buy a cheasy hub maybe(no ports to configure). That's your best bet prolly. :), most likely will cost 50$ or thereabouts

edit: you most likely won;t get into trouble, just try what i said first, if all else fails then shun him away(rr guy) :) and get out the wallet and go shopping (if you can spend it) :spin:
