View Full Version : Early Playonline Promo
Just thought I'd post some pictures captured directly from a very early Playonline Promotion Video that was included in the first edition of Final Fantasy X (can as an extra DVD).
The entire video runs close to 13 minutes and includes both a small preview of FFXI and Playonline.
The FFXI part is what you would expect, people gathering together, fighting, exploring, etc.
The Playonline section follows a small plot or something I can't quite understand. The acting is bad and the production is kinda messy. From what I can see, it's something about people who they see each other daily but have no idea they are playing together. Crappy but it does show some ideas of what Square intended Playonline to be.
Where it starts from a list of previews of upcoming square titles.
Before they drew a real title art.
It starts with alot of flying through various areas, and yes the rute areas are shown, I can clearly see the ruins. To save room and possible overload of server I have skipped to where they first show the character. I have never seen this skin before.
Since when are there dinosaurs in the Dangruf Wadi.
3 other characters are shown fighting different monsters until the screen comes out with...

I just needed to post these 2 pics. Serves no purpose but is rather amusing to watch (when in video anyway).

a few more seconds of gameplay demo then it stops and this comes out
in the city, everyone was with 'that'
first scene shows 2 girls sitting in an open cafe on a Boulevard. they are reading a horoscope of some sort. it introduces first character which is...
more conversation between those two and groaning about something or rather then you see this guy riding his bike then pulling out a camera after which it introduces the 2nd character
it shows back to the first character typing some text message then sending it. then the scene goes to a someone's apartment. guys walks down the stairs to his PS2 and he is
same person sit down and turns on POL, couple of seconds showing it there. early POL layouts and all. one screen says it all
anyway, he sends a email to the first character (the girl) which we now know is called Natsumi. (she is featured on the current POL wallpapers). after that Natsumi gets the email which reads
she ponders for abit (rather retardedly)
next scene is probably the definative model of US/JP playing together. it show the last character
he opens his POL and apparently natsumi has emailed him with...
this shows NA/JP interaction. the 4th character is american btw
he gets gay and is replying when his mother calls him for something and comes into the room. he closes the TV his PS2 is connected to which probably shows a time difference?
he later turns it back on replies which is promptly read by natsumi in very very very japanese spoken engrish
after you see natsumi kinda dissappointed but then she recieves another email reads some message from the 2nd character(takeshi) which looks like they have cancelled a FFXI meeting cos of the american. it then see the next day of natsumi going back to the cafe then shows her in her room with a finger pointing "in love?" and the text changes to

she is sitting infront of her POL and then the scene shows her editing her profil. her is the screen. a very beta of the layout of POL
next scene shows the 3rd character (i stil have no idea of his name) then a chat screen on POL (which i never use and don't know how to use and didn't know existed). there's lots of typing but eventually it turns something up as
suddenly the american POPs
ending typed text says "let's go in japanese" then they play (look at the first PT shot, you can work it out) end of that is this
after a night of FFXI natsumi is walking somewhere where she meets the 3rd guy (i swear i can't make out his name) and at this point she seems to know who he is but it ends this charade with her smiling and running off with her friends then it ends
after that ends a narrated video takes up showing basically the same stuff shown in the first demo but notice this screen showing how early this promo really is
after the narrater explains all the features planned for POL including manga online and such it shows this screen with which i will end this brief screen show. hope it helps in some ways.

I've used the chatrooms in the beta version and it is decent.. very smooth looking too. Some original chat room sounds too lol.
Wtf is up with that gear? That green suit looks pretty nice...

Heh, shame Natsumi probably turns out to be some fat 40 year old doley, resigned to sitting and waiting for HNMs to pop 24 hours a day :)
He's got a cool Tonberry toy like me though - that must get the women flocking to him.
I remember this video well thanks to you posting these images. It's on the FFX bonus disc, isn't it? It looks sweet in high-res format with decent lighting. Maybe this is what PS3 MMORPGs will look like.

This old thing was on "the other side of the FF" DVD that came with FFX jpn. Dunno about EN though. It's no surprise to anyone, even the oldest forum discussions on here (before PC version) we expected japanese and english players to eventually be on the same servers.

I actually downloaded this video from somewhere two years ago. It was like 118 megs. Heh. Dunno what happened to it.

Er, I've got FFX international for PS2, but the FFXI video in it was just some shitty little scene which looked awful. Where is this promo on the disc?

some of the game play pictures (especially the equips) were from ffxi beta, but the hume face and monster were not from beta.........
This promo was on the bonus DVD included with the ORIGINAL FIRST EDITION FINAL FANTASY X. Anything after the first original edition would have not included it.
I would upload the entire video except I don't have a host that will hold it and take the high bandwith needed to accommodate it.
I have ripped it into a VXID AVI with video only so far and it's around 80MB with sound maybe double. It's DVD quality so you would expect it to be so big.
Btw, the scene with the american kid is entirely in english. Whatever he says is just subtitled.
But please do your best to encode it?Because Its rare to find it on the web,very rare.I thinking of bying the jap version of FFX just for this add.

Ah.. I remember this promo on the DVD. I wasn't too impressed at the time. I remember hearing of bad first impressions and it didn't seem like anything special. I'm happy with the final version though :)
I'll try encoding it some time... depends on how big it is etc :sweat:

when playonline.com first debuted, they had this video streaming as a promo for what Playonline was intended to become.
But where can I find it?Its rare to find it on the web now
