Firstly, the book Legolas seems much better than the movie Legolas. I think it's because the book had more time to get a story out than the movie. I think they have a automatic lock out for bad words and such. ^^ You are just going to have to work around it if you want to have swear words in your username. ><

Well assuming anyone can find out as the beta test is kinda small.

15 characters with no special figures or numbers gets kind of hard.

Even if you stretch the limits of the human language, there is so many comprehensable combinations before we start breaking down. It might be bad to have people forced to put "madskillzzzzzzz" out of desperation.

Did anyone ever find out if names were local to each specific server or is it common among all servers? I hope that it is server based. That means more of a chance for you to get the name you want. On the other hand I've heard of this world shifting <moving from one server to another> has anyone ever done this and been refused the server you want because your name was taken?

i would venture to say that the names are probably gunna held under one server so that the world shift some F things up i mean you can't be on Ramuh by the name of X and switch to Bahamut with the same name if it is already taken therefore i think i would resolve that by keepin the name under one server

If I were square and my main objective was to spread the load over all the servers, I would make each server an idenpendant host for characters specific to that server. In fact, thats probably why the world pass thing is in effect i think, so that groups of people will not just flock to 1 server because its popular and leave their other servers barren. And actually, if all the names/characters were stored on one server... then there would be no need for other servers and we all would be playing on the same giant server together. So.. if you follow the logic, names _have_ to be unique to each server. I guess this means that if you are gonna world shift, you'd better hope your name is not taken on the server you wanna goto. Oh well, better to dissapoint one person than many.

i'm gonna try to name my character something that goes with the actual RACE of the character.

for example, i wouldnt name my taru "DEATHKILLbEaSt" . unless i was going for a humorous name or sometihng (like naming a galka "littlejohn" or or a taru "bigfreddy")

i always try to go for an original name. its no fun to see 30 variations of cloud, sephiroth, or something else like that. to me, it makes the game more realistic if people come up with something creative. and that way, you probably wont have to worry about somebody already having your name on a server.

also, your name can probably have an effect on the type of people you group with as well.....NOBODY WANTS TO GROUP WITH SOMEONE NAMED bigcox2000 or copkillaz. i know i wouldnt

thats my biggest problem with american players, although i'm sure some japanese do this as well.....but it spoils the scenery for me when i see someone named "undeadhitler" trying to get attention.

this is a good crowd so i'm sure you guys will choose sweet names!!!

I hope you do know that World pass forces you to MAKE a new character, not MOVE a character.

World Shift from what I heard is filling out a FORM, and then GMs, etc, go over it.

I believe there is also a mention of the FORM will also help sort out naming conflicts.

So a world shift could happen, you will just be notified to change your name, or send you to a server where you don't have dupicates.[ Remember, they haven't said where they will send you or if you can even choose].

I'm leaning more and more to indivual servers holding character databases, because FFxi seem to have a lot of personal information, added to the fact that you have over 200k users. The load for a super node server would be costy.

The only way I think they could do it is if each server has their own character databases gets copied onto a master database periodically.

I haven't heard of a mmrpg ever doing this for obvious reasons.

This correlates with my thinking as well. I mean better to dissapoint a few people who are trying to world shift than the hundreds who would be trying to get the same name on a single server. It makes far more sense to satisfy more people with allowing them to get the name they want by having each server independant.

From what I've heard, world shifters do not tell you which server they are going to send you to, probably so that if your name is taken on the least populated server, it'll just send you to next in line without you realizing it. Plus world shifters only appear when a server is overly crowded so you shouldn't really plan on ever using one

what are you talking about? they have a sun dataserver, 73 gb triple mirror system running oracle 9. there is a whole lot of servers which you will never hear about running everything in the game.
