From what I have read on the net it sounds like this game is most like EQ. What are your opinions? I'm looking for a game similar to EQ, but without the huge time requirement.

It resembles EQ and DOAC pretty much. The gameplay is very similar as is the group dynamic. Overall I feel FFXI is a bit slicker when it comes to the actual fighting. The auto lock with skill chains add a more action game feel and with MUCH better animation, it enhances the same ol', same ol' MMORPG gameplay we've all gotten used to.

Add in controlable mounts, interesting & well written stories, a fleshed out job system, and graphics that hold up well, theres not too much to get upset over. Theres nothing here that hasn't been done before, but it all comes together nicely. Veteran players will find more things that annoy or are lacking than the newbs. If Square wants to, they can fix things that veteran PC players will be agrivated by. Although, they haven't mentioned doing anything about them. Thats troublesome.

I've stopped playing past 18, since I don't want to "play out" the game before I've even bought it. But, there still is a pretty decent time investment to get anywhere in the game. Play styles differ, but as a semi casual gamer playing a few hours a night nere and there, it took a few weeks to get to 18 and my sub job. I took my time though and rarely if ever POWERLEVED. I know people that have gotten to 18 in a MUCH shorter time, but they're kinda sad=) I know it'll take me a few months to get an advanced job up past 30.

Thanks. I liked the world of EQ, but DAOC was boring to me. An interesting world to explore is one of the most important things for me. I also like the battle system of EQ. I'll give it a shot.

I've played Asheron's Call 1, Asheron's Call 2, and Star Wars Galaxies. I haven't had the opportunity to play FFXI yet, but gonna get it as soon as it comes out. It looks great but I'll know how it stacks up against other MMO's when I get to try it out with my own hands. ;)
