Well with the realease date of FFXI for Windows set to October and FFXI for PS2 still at Q1 2004 I have finally snapped and actually considered buying FFXI for PC (before then I was 100% sure I was going to buy FFXI for PS2). So I will tell you the circumstances I am undr and suggest to me if I should buy FFXI for PC.

Release Date:

This at first didn't matter but under current circumstances FFXI for Windows is 2-3 months before FFXI for PS2 even if its release on the first of 2004.

Cost:

Currently I have a almost going out of date computer but to play FFXI for PC all I have to do is buy a $49.99 box and for PS2 I have to buy probably a $49.99 game, about a $30 network connection, and probably I'm guessing a $60-80 HDD.

Peformance:

This is the only one for me that PS2 is slightly ahead. The PS2 for anyone if you have a cable connection (which I have) will peform fine. With my PC these are my specs:

1.4 GHz
256 MB of Ram
Geforce 2 (this is what I'm thinking I'm most likely going to have to upgrade)

Also I got on my last score of 1408 (yes most say you need about a 1500 to at least play okay so thats why I'm slightly worried).

So after all this should I buy FFXI for PC (even though I might have to slightly upgrade with probably a new video card) or wait longer for PS2 and have to buy more equipment buy have guranteed peformance.

true, but due to the ps2 memory restrictions you will feel the lag when there are alot of people/monsters on screen. This can be couter-balanced with the pc tho...:dead:

Wow, thats like a total ripoff. My 200 gb is less than twice that price. It was 150, but now they have 200gb 8mb cache hds at like 120-130.

I'd say wait for the PS2 version, you'd have to spend just as much money on a new video card, and whatever else you need to upgrade your computer. Not only that, unless you have a ps2 controller adapter, PC controls suck. This game was meant to play better with consoles. Mouse and keyboard movement are really annoying. When you play it with a PS2 controller, it's really more responsive. My friend, Pai Pai Master has the ps2 and pc beta, and he always plays ps2, cause he thinks it's better.

Edit: Also, playing ffxi, and your computer isn't the best, the controls can still be kinda laggy. I had troubles as a white mage like that, the menu wouldnt click fast enough. That's cause I got a simular processor like yours. Plus, we dont know how much the HDD for ps2 will be. So we cant automatically say it'll be $60-$80. I have a feeling it'll be reasonably priced.

Well, with estimations, and assuming that you only have to upgrade the video card, here's how I see it will plan out.

PC: $50 For Game, $200 Dollars for top-of-the-line vid card.

PS2: $50 Dollars For Game, 20 Dollars for PS2 modem, 40 - 50 dollars for HDD.

PC = $250 PS2 = $120

Advantage: PS2

Also, playing on PC is alot eaiser then using a controller in my opinion. Who has time to drop a controller to type? With the PC, everything is at your finger tips, hell if you didn't want to move the camra or talk to anyone, you know play the entire game with one hand, eaisly. People have their likes and dislikes. I'll probley be getting both PC and PS2, since my friend wants to play as well. You can access your account from any PC or PS2 that has the software installed on it. Well, there's my two cents, cya.

I'm sure the keyboard and mouse thing is fine for PC gamers, but I just couldnt stand sitting hunched over the keyboard all the time. The advantage of the controller, is when you're not talking to anyone, and you're just traveling, or battling solo, you can sit back and relax with the controller in your hand. Works out better that way I think ^^

At first, maybe it will, but at (probably level 10) you'll start in parties and there has to be constant communication for it to work out properly. Also, when you join a LS, you will be talking 24/7.

I agree with exor here, I would definitely prefer keyboard over the controller. It make everything easier to execute. I just done my first BCNM40 last night and thank god for keyboard :P. Eventhough I did not manage to stop some of the flood but at least I managed to stop most of it. (casting silence to the black mandragora combined with blm 10 min ability). Without the keyboard I wouldnt have cast the silence on time. Beside that, you can type many info on the chat screen while you are fighting.

But of course controller has some advantages too. You can sit back and enjoy the game (especially when soloing). Therefore for ultimate solution.......I think is to buy the Logitech controller and keyboard in one although it is quite pricey  . Anyway just stick to which you feel easier with ^^

in my opinion ps2 is easier than the pc for moving and talking. if u get the control and keyboard combo thing by logitech it will be just as easy, if not easier. the only thing im having trouble with is the question about graphics. will the ps2 and pc user get around the same lvl of detail?

MessiahX, I have a pentioum 4 2.4GHZ with a geforce 4 ti4200 and I got a benchmark score of over 5300! oh and I also have 768mb of ddr ram too, so u should get around the same score if not higher due to your faster proccesser.

I've given both a great deal of playing time, and the PS2 is more fun. I dunno what it is about looking at a computer monitor for hours on end, and sitting in a computer chair, but I can't play for more than a few hours.

I can play the PS2 version for days on end (literally did this past weekend) without getting tired of it. And yes, I have a fast computer that runs it fine and a flat screen monitor. I'll still take the PS2 version.

But I'm kinda contradicting myself because I'm gonna buy the PC version then the PS2 version when it comes out and sell it for PC.

Well right now I really am only considering PC becuase I want to start playing the NA version and not wait another 2 months for pS@ version.
