You can only get EXP from killing monsters. Doing missions raises your Rank, while Quests give you anything from Gil and Equipment to Maps.

well thank u but not what i meant, im not a stuub. i just want to know if the monsters you kill during quest and exploration and such give you enough exp that you dont have to spent most of the gaming sitting around and camping the same monsters over and over like everquest to gain a lvl?

Well, you can get great exp just killing all the the monsters when you travel from one place to another, so yes, killing monsters during a quest will get you alot of exp.

When leveling I usually don't do it on a mission or a quest. If I get a level while on one great but the tactics that I usually employ are:
1. Defeat "even" & "tough" enemies in an area non-stop, rarely having to heal if in a good PT. Though the yield is less that IT enemies per battle the ease and speed (not to mention exp chain bonus) of doing it this ways earns much more experience vs. the amount of time spent between battles. This is my FAVORITE way to level. Fast and easy exp!
or
2. In more "dangerous" areas, set up a safe camp, designate a puller, and just keep luring and chaining as many enemies as possible before resting is needed. This works well in Quifm, Battalia, Rolanberry, etc. and is my 2nd favorite way to level.
or
3. PT looks for IT enemies only and engages them almost getting killed and then having to stop and rest anywhere from 2 - 5 minutes after every battle before being prepared for the next one. Exp. yield is usually 100 - 200 exp per battle which is nice but considering downtime involved this is the least efficient way to level and unfortunately seems to be the most popular way to level. Personally I hate leveling this way because so much more time is spent recovering from that ass beating that IT monster just gave your party instead of what you want to be doing when trying to level and that's fighting. Needlees to say this is my 3rd favorite way to level.
and last and definitely least!
4. PT stands around doing absolutely nothing and cannot decide on what to do. Obvious exp. yield is a big fat 0! I seriously hate when this happens because I have better things to do than stand around waiting for other people to make up their minds since I could at least be getting SOME experience soloing instead. This is my very least way of leveling and usually puts me in a bad mood.
and not really a way to level but should be mentioned,
5. If you are in a PT and they let you die repeatedly then it might be a good idea to leave that PT since dying is very counter productive to leveling. Needless to say if this is happening to you your exp yield is going to be negative :P
The main purpose of doing missions/quests is to get them done. Most players will bring alone high level friends, or do missions in a very very large group of people to ensure safety and success. So... no, doing missions/quests as they are right now has nothing to do with EXPing at all.

what a disappointment, that is the worst game concept ever created. dont you think you should get your exp during the actual story of the game, rather than just sitting around the same spot trying to finding out how to get the "uberest PT" with "the best and only sub classes for certain jobs" . its why roleplaying sucks now, because you spend the most of your time outside of the story of the game and everyone has to be a clone class to be good, it really ruins the atmosphere
They should of just made the quests much longer with multiple parts so people could quit in the middle if they need to and then you could pick new people up to help finish the quest later. that would make it much easier to get into parties. oh well maybe someday another good mmorpg will change it.

i mean its like playing the story part of the game is a hassle you have to deal with while lvl'ing up. IT ruins the game arrrrggg:mad:

Yes but, you've just played the beta  it wasn't supposed to be intended as the full game.
Umm, or not?
The leveling formula is just as it should be... level aside from the missions, and concentrate solely on the quests when you are on them.

Well if you think about it the quest/mission was included as a "break" from leveling. You can either deviate from the story line by just leveling, or you can immerse yourself in the "story line". The devs at Square obviously considered the option of implementing an EXP based quest/mission, but wisely decided against it. The sole purpose of a company or any business for that matter is to make $$$ by increasing the fun/longevity of the game. The longer it takes you to level, the longer you are going to pay them... I can think of a million ways to improve any game, but would it benifit the company's ca$h flow? I might be wrong, but at the same time, I might be right. It's only logical. nuk nuk

Deusfurs, you may be judging what you've read too harshly. The missions in the game are designed for certain levels to complete. So for me, it has seemed like a very smooth progression - level a little, try a mission, see what sorts of enemies there are, and complete it if I can. So there's always a nice goal to leveling -- it's rarely just leveling for its own sake. And missions definitely aren't a hassle - they increase your rank (not level) and enable you to use certain higher level items.
Also, the quests (separate from missions) often involve finding items that drop off of enemies. So as you're out killing enemies and getting XP, you're also completing quest requirements. Those quests get you money and items.
Gaining XP while you have a spell called "Signet" cast on you also contributes to your nation's Conquest status, and conquest of geographic areas means you can get crystals from defeated enemies in addition to XP. And crystals are the key to the game's crafting system, which in turn make the non-quest items dropped by enemies more valuable, which makes the nation's economy strong.
I think it all holds together really well.
people don't get together only for EXP all the time. of course you can make a minimal group of 6 at a low level to complete some missions but it might take you all day to get through all enemies instead of a few hours (or die and won't pass it at all)
Doing mission is fun. The sory line you'll see is entertaining. I enjoy it personally. It's a great time to travel together with high level friends and not worry about exp
