can't change language to japanese

When I am Logged into POL, I can swich between english and japanese fine. Yet, when I am playing FFXI and I try to switch to japanese from english on the little menu by the chat box, I get the wonderful "eeng" sound or in other words the "You are not allowed to do that" sound. I can't use any of the four boxes in that little menu. I followed the guide on this site and looked in the config menu, but I couldn't find the input language changer. Is there someway to fix this or am I doomed to a game without spell marcos and typing in romanji?

I've never got such an error.. or sound. Is this on the PC version or PSX version? If its on the PC version you should try these two things. They generally fix any wierd problems. the first is the language switch, Alt+tilde"~" operator. The second is the function switch Alt+CapsLock. Thats all I know of the japanese language bar, though I do plan on learning more later. If its the PSX version, then I have no experience.
