So most of the classes are fairly balanced and to me all the basic classes do have their uses. I was wondering though, since you reach lv 30 and still have to earn an advanced class, are they so powerful to make it worth it? By the time your a lv 32/16 WAR/MONK, are you really gonna want Pal or Drk? How about the other advanced classes? Say summoner? Are you gonna want that with your 30/15 BLM/WHM? Or is it just something cool that you can say, hehe, look at me?

no its not a waste of time because advanced jobs have different skills and those skills can be used differently. and anyways people might like that class so they pick it.they made them advanced jobs so u can earn the right to be that class thats all i can tell u for right now cant explain the rest.nodachi explain to him/her about thesebasic and advanced jobs i gotta go

Ok, I can kind of understand that, but I want to know, like just for the sake of argument, PAL and DRK were not advanced classes and playable from the start and just exactly like they are now otherwise, no more or less powerful than before. Are there reasons for picking a PAL or DRK over a WAR other than personal preference to offense and defense in this instance or is it still no more than the difference between wanting to pick a RDM over WAR?
I've only had the game a short time and have managed to work a Hume up to LV 10 RDM, and LV 9 MNK. I actually started with a Hume RDM cause I really couldn't decide if I wanted to be a mage or fighter and I thought if it as getting the best of both worlds which of course is also the same reason I picked Hume. Now, Hume RDM really isn't my first choice of characters, but it's getting really fun with this character as a red mage and Monk. I'm thinking that overall, I would prefer to play a Taru BLM/WHM combo but now I'm hesitant to start anew for various reason (buddy list starting to grow, people I party with, quests and gear aquired, and most importantly of all, dying with a Tarutaru BLM, that I created to check it out, at low levels so often I am starting to rethink it). I know I can take my Hume still and press on to Lv 18 and supplement whatever other classes I may want to lv with RDM or MNK skills, but it just seems to be so slow leveling now, I just couldn't imagine pressing on to 30 and taking that character back to Lv 1 and Working that again. I'm a student who will have little or no time to play during the school year and thinks Ninjas are just really cool, but that little to no play time makes me think I'll be wanting to run with Lv 30 instead of spending that little time working up a 1st lv again just so I can be a ninja.
One thing that should make it easier for you to level the second time around is the fact that you will have a subjob the second time.

First off, i have no clue what J_blind saidi... so i would assume not to listen to him, cause usually people that post that kind of stuff and flame (or try to) usually have nothing good to say... Personally I say stick with the hume... try out a bunch of combo's and find the one you like... its a lot better than choosing taru, and finding out that you like warrior or something (even though a lot of people say any race makes any good class)...
But Adv jobs arent "better" than regular jobs... they're more specialized... like war is 1/2 tank 1/2 damage dealer... or they can be either or... Drk is a MUCH better dmg dealer, while pld is a MUCH better tank... For the most part (i heard) there's no reason to do a warrior to 75 (even though there's a lot of people doing it)... just do what you like... if you want to get to 30 fast, do a whm or warrior... Hume's are great at both and then when you get to 30 pick Ninja or whatever... try em all out... if you dont like it change...
As for leveling... yes this game is a huge level grind... it takes a while to get high level... though as Xavz said, it is a lot eaisier with a sub job... I heard after level 25 it gets a bit eaisier to level... (at least i heard)... So have fun with it... if you cant take the slow leveling, it does get slower, but its not that bad... :)
Sorry if i rambled on for a while i hope i helped at all (and im sorry if i didnt) and good luck!

On a case by case basis, yes the basic classes are still worth it.
Monk at the higher levels is a better damage dealer than most of the advanced classes.
The basic mage classes are still considered the standard, having a Summoner is still not considered 100% optimal (but i still love having them in my PT).
THF is necessary all the way to the high levels.
WAR is the only basic class that gets less popular later on, but in reality WAR lives on by being the standard sub most melee classes take.
sorry miss read a bit. edit.
As about balancing, fighters jobs in this game are overlapping each other in a sense. Some do some don't. let me try break down their roles a bit
Tanking - Pld, Nin
Attacking - Drk, Drg, Rng, Thf
In the middle - War, Sam, Mnk
As i see, the group picks members to fit into certain role they need. Tanking and attacking normally are the case and the jobs that are specialized in that way will get invite before the jobs in the middle.
But apart from their roles, their abilities and weapon also make them kinda have their own unique personality too. Which IMO, advanced jobs in general are more fun to play and require more attension and skill (with an exception of Thf maybe) These.... don't help you get easier group unfortunately but ... yea like you say it's for your own pleasure
they are still worth getting for me at least. You'll have fun getting them, and have fun playing them
I thought 'Advanced' jobs only meant the new jobs, not 'better' jobs... ^^;;
WAR and THF are still demanded as sub, and... I still believe basic and advanced jobs all have their pro and cons, so can't say now that we have advanced jobs, we can say byebye to our basic jobs...

well i heard warrior/ninja becomes best tank in the game better than paladin.
WAR/NIN at later level do make good tank, they have higher attack than PLD or NIN, and as long as they have Utsusemi, they will be taking little damage...

advanced job = timesink that S-E uses to make you play something you don't want to play in order to make you use something you want.
I'm glad that they make you get a job to 30 before you level up an advanced job. Otherwise there would be tons of Paladins running around with level 5 warrior subs and Bards without a White Mage sub.
All that time "wasted" on leveling a basic job doesn't go to waste if you use it for a subjob, which is what 90% of the people with advanced jobs do.
