non sony hdd?

I was searching around for info o the hdd and I came to a fourm site. One of the psts said that HE cracked the IRX code? And now you can use any hard drive(properly forrmatted) on the PS2. He said you can use it for FFXI. The onlything I don't getis will you need a Mod chip?

If anyone can tell me anything about this please do.
