this is the job combination i really want to be, however i have a few questions.
1) as a summoner sub, can you use ALL the summons instead of being restricted to a few?
2)are the summons going to be as helpful? what i mean is can i use garudas blink ability for example?
3) how often will i be looked for in parties? i did a bit of research and from what i found ouit the most popular subs for rdm is blk or wht.
4) is this combo good for soloing? i know i should party for most of the game, but sometimes when you just feel like soloing...
5) Is this combo 'fun'? what i mean is, is there a variety of different things to do in battle. for example i dont want to be a wht because i dont want to heal all the time or i dont want to be a blk because i dont want to nuke all the time. thats why i chose a rdm. but will a summoner sub provide more variety within the class.
6) what guild/s would you suggest i should join with this job combo? which is the most useful and why?
and lastly any last comments/tips/suggestions about the combo would be greatly appreciated.
sorry for asking so much its just that im confident ill get the answers im looking for by posting here.
If anyone has anymore questions, about this job combo feel free to ask in this topic.
thanks in advance
as i understand
1. there's no level restriction for each beast. so you can summon every beasts you have obtained regardless of what level your smn is. your level still limit the ability your beasts wil have, still.
2. I have never played summoner myself... but yea the 2 most useful abilities I've seen are group blink (level 25?) and group stoneskin (what level?). those are VERY useful.
3. sometimes when we have more than 2 redmages in the same PT, some of them change their subjob to rdb/brd ^^; (if there is no bard of course)
but rdm/smn I haven't seen before.... It would be interesting to try tho.
4. abilities the beasts give you, you can cast them by yourself already. Garuda's group blink, but you can blink yourself, for example.
and if you have refresh (which you should if you reach level 50 with rdm) you don't really need smn refresh ability. it might be useful tho
5. hmmm I can't say... redmage is the only mage that I don't feel so sleepy when playing hehe... with /smn maybe you can have fun blinking and stoneskinning your members.... interesting thing to do but don't know how fun it is...
6. I don't think redmages really have full use of any guilds... cooking sounds interesting to mee. pies and juice and yagudo drinks can be a great help to every mages.

You can use all the summons You have accquired. When you get the SMN job you're only given Carbuncle, but you must go find parties willing enough to help you get more. They win stuff too even if they don't want the summons.
2)are the summons going to be as helpful? what i mean is can i use garudas blink ability for example?
They won't be as helpful because depending on your SMN's level determines how many abilities you have available. Since it's a sub, this results in less abilities, but nontheless, at 60+ RDM/SMN will have access to a few good abilities.
3) how often will i be looked for in parties? i did a bit of research and from what i found ouit the most popular subs for rdm is blk or wht.
A RDM is looked for a couple things:
Refresh - Allows MP to be recovered quickly
Dispel - Removes any positive status on a monster
Healing spells - Any healer is welcome to a party
Since you're not going to have /BLM or /WHM this is what you use with those:
/BLM:
Dezone - Lets you return home easily
Escape - Lets you escape a dungeon
/WHM:
Status curing spells - Stuff like virus, poison, etc
Compatibility with convert - /WHM + convert = almost unlimited MP
With /SMN you get:
- All RDM spells (duh...)
- Summon abilities
*If you're a RDM/BLM you can replace a BLM somewhat with a few of your nukes, plus you'll have Dezone and Escape.
*As RDM/WHM you'll be the ultimate supporter, since you can heal, cure statuses, and whenever you convert (at higher levels) you can regain almost all your HP back, for yet another convert down the road.
*As a RDM/SMN parties can ask you to nuke or heal, but with /SMN as a subjob you probably want to summon. Summoning means your MP is draining, so you'll mostly be summoning, cast an ability, call your summon back, and then continue your regular affairs as a RDM. Party invites won't dimish because anyone needs a healer, but for SMN specific tasks I doubt anyone will call you unless it's STRICTLY needed. (example: something hits too much and they need that party blink)
4) is this combo good for soloing? i know i should party for most of the game, but sometimes when you just feel like soloing...
For soloing I'd suggest /BLM because you want to go home when you're done, aswell as have better attack spells. You don't need to spend MP on /SMN abilities because you don't need your summon to cast blink/STR increases/weapon enchantments, etc... because the MP you use is not worth it when it's only you. You can do most of that stuff with your RDM spells anyway.
Somewhat, but you'll mostly be doing lots of RDM stuff anyway. Summons are very costly on MP, and unless you have a good reason to cast their abilities, you'll be depleted before you know it. You'll summon, cast abilities(s), call back, and continue to heal and throw in some MB or nukes... typical RDM gameplay.
6) what guild/s would you suggest i should join with this job combo? which is the most useful and why?
Guilds don't matter till you can profit from them, so I wouldn't suggest doing them till you can afford the loss. However, culinarian seems like a good guild to help your personal needs like buying juices. Weavers and Alchemist are also pretty useful.
and lastly any last comments/tips/suggestions about the combo would be greatly appreciated.
I suggest overall, never focus on one combo. It's best to be versitile, so you should focus on being a RDM first. Then you focus on what subjobs you'll need throughout your life as a RDM... and as you well know /WHM and /BLM are quite useful.
So, in the end, you should have /WHM, /BLM, and /SMN all ready to sub whenever possible. You'll have firsthand experience deciding which one is better for your playstyle, which one gets you more party invites, and which one is more fun. You'll come by situations where a party asks you to change to /WHM or /BLM and you can do it... then they feel they've recruited someone that knows what they're doing.

Thanks a lot for your help Jei, especially vissione. ive got ALL the info i was looking for from both of you
ill take your advice vissione and basically level up wht, blk, sum and see for myself which is the best sub for me.
i also decided that ill join the alchemy and culinary guilds only. making potions and temporary stat increase food sounds like theyll be very useful for a mage.
just one last general question:
how do the spell animations look in this game (especially the spells which rdm have)
thanks again for any help

I'd suggest looking at some screenshots and/or movies since it's quite hard to explain. I've seen many spell animations and some are quite simple, others are very cool looking. Weapon Skill animations look cooler though... IMO. ;)
I've seen ancient magic... like for example tornado makes this huge tornado over your victim and it engulfs a huge area. Fire/Ice/Water/Wind/Thunder/Earth all those types are what you'd expect to see.. not much difference. RDM only spells like weapon enchantments are pretty cool, they look like sparks coming out of your hand.
As the game progresses there will be newer spells, so it will get more interesting as time goes by.

Hallo rpgdemon
I will tell you since i am also leveling my summoner now some of my experience.
In level up PT when i use blm I focus primarily on daong the most damage as fast as possible.
So ive used smn for the mp boost .
Now my main is rdm, that is my career..
but in almost all the PT i get called for i am always there to do the damage. I know its not for refresh as i dont own that spell yet. So the people are jpn friends or people who have heard good things about me .
I have used summoner with blm since its at a level that i will get the most use from as a subjob.
Now some of the tactics i use as smn sj are to heal and take care of the adds if we get them wchic happens alot for some unknown reason. Even though your summons is not as strong as pure smn/blm combo , it handles that add just long enough for your warriors to taunt and get soem hp back in them.
Also when your summons is dead and your main tank is about to get creamed summon again and sic it on the monster and have it attack with its special to basically taunt. then do some damage to it using spells. after the add is somewhat hurt remove the summons from the fray and rest . WHen a blm or rdm has summoner sj for the mp boost i suggest taking about 3 bottles of juice to recoup the mp loss and basically even it out if you HAVE to use your summons for an extended period of time.
well thats about it for now talk soon.
