After getting beta and messing around with the character creater, I have realized Galkas make the best redmages. Their Int and Mnd are 7 points each, and their Str is well off too.

And a good mix would be Pal/Rdm because basically a Palidin is a Redmage but with higher attack and lower Int/Mnd. So why not add a Redmage to that to increase both by a little bit? You'll be stronger, and be able to heal for more.

You are seriously WAAAAAY off on your perspective of things.

- A PLD is a tank, best one in the game, and can be a backup healer.
- A RDM is a support mage, healer and weakenining, sometimes nuking.

Galkas are the worse mages in the game, but PLD isn't a bad choice for them given their high HP and VIT, just remember your magic will suck.

INT has nothing to do with your healing power, only MND affects it.

Galkas would make great tanks too, so wouldn't that only make it better? So far you've made me want this combo more. The only flaw is galka is ugly in some armors.

I agree with vissione, in a high lvl party no one will take you over a BLK or a WHM or even any race of RDM besides Galka. I think that your Galka RDM is the MOST useless mage combe in the game. Do you know what a tank is? Because there is NO good reason to be a Paladin and not be able to up your hate.

Your INT and MND don't have to be exactly the same to be "better," what exactly are you basing your superiority on? A mage must be able to cast, a lot... but you can't!

You will have considerably less MP than any other RDM, even with +MP equipment... which consequently lower your HP. Humes, Mithras, and even Elvaans can be great RDMs, but Galkas no.

Galkas suck because their MP is so low that after a few big MP sucking spells, your MP is depleted and you have to sit. This leads to no exp chains, which means slower exp.

I'll give you the benefit of trying RDM, because convert may help your MP problems, but you will not be a good mage given you'll always be low on HP and vulnerable to attack.

At later levels your STR is useless in parties, so being able to swing a sword is not going to be impressive. You'll be casting mostly support magic, heals, and a few nukes... but you're not going to be "teh uber mage!!" or anything.

I won't say "DON'T BE A GALKA MAGE!!" but I will warn you it's not pretty, especially at low levels when you can't convert and you're always sitting. :sweat:

*Consider hume atleast, many career RDM's recommend it.

If I run out of MP I've always got the Galka's strength and a sword to back me up, but I never took into consideration the mp.

I just played a monk to level 10 in beta, and I'm not sure if I wanna do that again for import.

Seriously, a RDM is not a melee class just because they can use a sword. You're not going to do much but scratch something with your sword.

At lower levels you can tank and hit fairly well, but as you go higher things change. I don't know how much reading you do around here, but you're going to face a time when you're not even going to get close to a monster. Mages are weak, and RDMs are mages no matter what. You will stand back and cast magic... so if you think you can take out your sword like a sidearm and start bashing on a mob like if it's the perfect sidearm you're going to be let down by how inefficient you'll be. Even with your high STR, your job, your weapon selection, all that factors in that your sword swings are going to be weak. :sweat:

Sorry for being short with you and making no sense:rolleyes:, anyways I think it really depends on what you want to use more later on Red Mage kinda leads to be more of a Magic user than a fighter at higher lvls, but with a Warrior you could change that around. From what I understand, Red Mages are good solo at higher lvls, and in the end the difference between a Hume and a Elvaan won't be that big a deal. Also, to your favor Elvaan have good MND which will make your WHT naturally more useful, which personally I like white magic more. The thing to remember though is that the higher the lvls the more specialized people become, and if you are a full mage (BLK or WHT) or full Fighter you will be more useful o parties. The higher the lvls the wider the gap gets between specialized characters and solo type characters, and PT lvl is better than solo in pretty much every aspect later on. FFXI is more like IX where you want a balanced party for different tasks and less like VII were you can just make uber characters, because as long as the other other jobs are at your lvl, RDM will always be outclassed by someone, and in a party do you want the two RDM or the DRK and the WHM since the DRK will do more DMG and the WHM will heal more?:thumbsup:

May I make a suggestion or two?

I am a firm believer that people should play as whatever job/subjob/race combo they want to play, regardless of whether or not it might not be the most "useful" job combo out there. You are ultimately the one who will have to deal with lack of PT requests if that is what your choices yield, and in this game you can change jobs any time you decide you're sick of what you've chosen. So if you're REALLY dead set on playing as a Galka PLD/RDM, go for it.

However..

Galkas are not the best choice for any mage-type job. I play as an Elvaan RDM, which is also not the greatest choice, but it doable. If you want to be a RDM, your best options are Hume and Mithra. I can tell you from experience that MP makes a WORLD of difference in this game if you are going to play as any type of mage. As an Elvaan, I find myself running out of magic points before the other mages in the PT do quite frequently. As a Galka, you would have this problem but magnified.

There is a misconception that RDM are a melee type mage. This is true of solo play and money hunting. RDM are absolutely the best of the mage classes, IMO, for soloing. But when you are in a PT as a RDM, you are expected to stand back away from the front lines and cast magic. What type of magic you are expected to cast will vary greatly from one PT to the next, but I can guarantee you that if you whip out your sword and start swinging without casting spells, your PT will not be at all pleased with you.

Now, as for the combination of PLD/RDM..A Galka can and does make a good PLD because the primary job of a PLD is to take damage so the other PT members don't have to. Most people who play as a PLD will tell you that PLD/WAR is the best job combo because you need to be very adept at controlling the hate level of the enemy. If you really have a lot of determination though, PLD/WHM can work out. Curega draws a lot of hate, and so does the WHM 10 minute JA in conjunction with any curing spell. PLD also has a couple other ways to get hate on their own, so if you're diligent about it, you can still get the monster to beat on you playing as a PLD/WHM. However, a RDM doesn't really have any particular talent at attracting enemy hate. Sure, curing spells will eventually make the monster attack you, and so will getting in on the magic burst. But nothing like what a WHM attracts with Curega and Sign of Goddess.

I am telling you this because a PT will be upset with you if you play as a PLD and are unable to get the enemy hate targeted toward YOU personally. Your job as a PLD is to get the crud beat out of you. If your crud isn't sufficiently beaten, other members of your PT can and will die.

Make sense? I hope so. That said, play what you want to play. If it doesn't work out, you can always change your mind. ^^

At really high levels (past cap now) when you have phalanx it might help but then you will be fighting monsters in the hundreds so it might become obsolete, I personally think the best Galka PLD combo would be a WAR. You'll also have a defense skill from this plus the PLDs defender skill you will have really good defense. Then because of your strength you could attack the enemy get some hate and use PLD curing spells to get more hate. I'm probably wrong and went off of the PLD/RDM topic, but that's what I think.

EDIT: I thought Phalanx was a spell in the 40s, it's not it's 33, so it could still be usefull by the time you get it.

1) It's good that you have innitiative when choosing your job combos. What I do here is give suggestions, not commands. I suggest the best, only because it's what I'd like to be suggested if I were asking a question.

2) Your 1337 combo won't work because a SAM can't use 1H katanas, only 2H katanas, so you'd have to be a NIN/SAM to use 2 Katanas. Not only is that job combo going to take an incredibly long time, it's pretty much useless as SAM is a bad subjob till you hit 60... and even then it's neglible given all you get is 1 extra WS, but no defense or any other benefits.

3) I'm not kissing your ass, just letting you know that listening to people's suggestions helps you learn something. :sweat:

wash my mouth out? maybe u should wash my nuts out of ur mouth....maybe....but about redmages, there alright, they r hard to get by with at first, ur first spells arent that strong, i.e. dia, cure, rock. but it is a good start. if ur planning on subbing him with monk or warrior as main then that doesnt sound to bad. i suggest bringing him to 18, complete the subjob quest, gain a few additional levels to increase ur magic skills, then make him sub for a monk, because monks have high power and good melee, ur magic and melee will compliment each other. then continue to level monk to gain stronger melee.
