They probably aren't very common at all, not as main jobs anyways, because Elvaan have less DEX and AGI than Humes and Mithra which is essentially a THF primary weapon. It won't make a huge difference though, I think that the Monk as a sub job is a worse idea. Not that it's really bad, it just doesn't capitalize on the THF strengths anymore than an Elvaan. If your serious about a THF I would recomend a Hume/Mithra (Elvaan is definately do able though) THF/NIN, with that your DEX and AGI would be like 20 points higher than a Elvaan THF/MNK plus you get better abilities. Again the MNK's aren't bad it's just all they really add is HP which does almost nothing for a THF.

No problem... That is actually a very good plan a lot of people don't think of what sub job they will have before they get their advanced job, and strictly for making a THF survive til a lvl 30 MNK would do very well as a sub. Also, for a job like Thief Elvaan vs Hume isn't even really noticeable, so Elvaan would be a fine choice.

Thanks for the compliment i have been skimming through these boards alot and also have been using the stat calculator to help me choose which route i was going to go with my thief.

Don't use the stat calculator as law, just use it to get an idea of what you're looking at. Some things could either turn out better or far worse than you thought when looking at the stat calculator.

Stat calculator is ok for a rough estimate but it's not that accurate and it doesn't include passive abilities. Just so you know

Oh it's not like you did anything wrong, don't be sorry. I just didn't want you basing your choices to heavily upon the Stat calculator, and thought I would let you know.

Well they aren't very rare at all in Jueno, I see them all the time. Most of every high level Thief uses daggers though :P i'm starting to think I should switch.

its hardly ever about the stats for me the first time through. dont get me wrong, i will keep a close eye to them to maximize my chances of being a well placed aspect of the groups that I am in. But I am definately going to build the character I want the first time through the lvling up process of this game, and thats a Elvaan Thf/Mnk then later to a ninja. I just dont care. Alot of ppl have said that its a bad idea to choose an Elvaan for the THF role, but the same amount of ppl have said it doesnt matter. I havent done the research enough to tell you one way or the other, i am just more apt to making a character i think would be freaking cool. but now that i search the boards i might not stick with the subclasses that i thought i would due to the frequency of other players doing the same thing. I might do some ole off the wall subclass just to be different. I dunno...i duncare.

I didn't really care what people thought either its just that the feed back helps me what to expect as picking an elvaan thief. Its what i want to be and it seems like a very good combo IMO.
Well I look at it this way, do whatever makes you happy. I myself have a Hume THF I love it. Its your char do whatever you want. Your going to be the one useing it, thats just my input on the topic.

I too am going to be an Elvaan THF when the game comes out, and I'm thinking about having a warrior as my sub class. As for my advanced class I am thinking Ninja or Ranger. What do you think?

I think any combo of WAR/THF/RNG/NIN is pretty good, the worst being NIN/WAR or WAR/NIN. RNG/THF and RNG/WAR are both awesome, and THF/NIN and NIN/THF are also very good. You will definately want that THF though, since RNG and NIN are the two most expensive jobs in the game.

Thanks for the info Sirius! :) I'll have to write that down.
most common race i see in THF's AF are elvaans. follow my hume and then tarutaru.
not so many mithra in THFs AF in my server. galka and mithra THF are like a once in a while to see in Titan.

I've been playing an Elvaan thief in beta and have no complaints. The race gives you extra strength and vitality, so it makes it a lot easier to solo. Plus, I've been stealing a lot of items and selling them for some gil! I'd say definitely go for it if you are interested. If it doesnt work out, you can always change you class!

My Elvaan Thief kicks ass. I definitely reccomend it. My DEX is fine, and the strength bonus is awesome.

I am playing one now on JP server (now level 10). It seems if you have the right subjob (e.g. WAR/MNK), it isn't bad. I am able to keep up with my party to hunt.
However, I still believe as first job, thief should be played by MIT (cats). Once you get subjobs, it seems the impact of race on job is lowered. (Not to mention that you can modify some of your stats with equipments.)
So, may be you can try ELF/WAR (or ELF/MNK) as first job. Once you get subjob, switch to THF/WAR or THF/MNK. Hope this helps.

I have a question somewhat along the same lines of the poster. I can't decide if I want an Elvaan Thief/Nin or a Mithra Thief/Nin. Now everyone says the choice is really up to me and that you can make any race work and junk like that. So I have narrowed it down to this:
Which Race is more helpful to a PT?
What I mean is, what will benifit my party more? An Elvaan Thief that can take some more damage as well as deal it too but kinda slow for a Thief or a Mithra Thief that is (from what I heard) the best puller and plays the best off the Thief's abilities but can't take damage well and is weak.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, the choice is up to you. But some choices are easier than others. e.g. a Taru's dark knight is harder than a Gak's dark knight. So if you don't mind a little challenge, feel free to be whatever you want.

Depends on your PT. From what I see so far, no race has any significant advantages over the others. However, how you combine you jobs (individually and in party) to fit different situation matters the most.

Depends on your PT. Some PT prefers all out frontal assault (Brave Heart style), while some prefer gorilla warfare. So I believe there is no single answer unless you know what your PT's style is, and what they are up against.
Listen to your PT leader and negotiate with your PT about how to hunt. From my experience so far, there are two things that really ruin the fun of FFXI: soloing and (worse) getting stuck with a PT that don't know what they are doing.
As far as the Elvann thief vs Mithra thief, I believe it is a matter of trade off between quality and versatility. Talk to your PT and see what they prefer.

Thanks lovelace but that really didn't answer my question but I appreciate the feedback. Its just that I intend on making one character and since you can't change what race you are, talking to my PT leader about which they prefer wouldn't really work. Thanks again though for trying to help.
My question still stands, what does the average PT look for? A damage dealing Thief or a pulling Thief?

A PT needs BOTH, a damage dealing thf that can pull.
A pt would love a thf that knows how to do yokodama or at least normal fuidama(a good thf can do like 2 fuidama's in 40 second fight and still have it ready for renkei in the next fight).
A pt would love a thf that doesn't often make link when pulling and can speed up exp
- sometimes you can pull a monster even though there is another monster being really close to it.
- sometimes pathing makes link even though monsters are far from each other.
- Learning your pt has enough mp or not can speed up exp a lot too.
Just wanna repeat, race doesnt matter but skill does.. go for what you like.
In term of damage dealing.. hmm /shrug my dex is high, but elvaans do awesome job too as i have seen.
In term of pulling, .. hmm.. race does nothing.. indeed.. you die or make link anyway if you bad at pulling at high lv(say after 45+)
I chose being a mithra.. why?
first, i like kittens.
second, my gf like kittens.
third, I dont like elvaan male especially when they are wearing subriga - -'
...
hmm its all about looking for me.. ^^v

Choose what race you feel like; but you will have advantages if your primary role (tanker/melee/magic/support) fit your race. In late game, however, it doesn't seem to make much difference unless you go for the extreme cases (such as Galka black mage or Taru's dark knight).
