In the beginning you have 6 jobs to choose from, you can switch at any time at the mog house. Each job effects your characters stats and abilities. You can try them all on the same character to find what you like best.

After you level one job to lvl 18, you can do a quest that lets you have a sub job. The subjob will be always be max level of said job or half the level of your main job, whichever is higher. Example, you have a lvl 18 warrior and a lvl 4 thief, if you sub thief, your level will be 18/4, however, if the thief is lvl 15, your level will be 18/9, since your sub can never be more than half of your main job.

At lvl 30 you can do quests to attain advanced jobs such as Paladin, Dark Knight, Summoner, and Bard. These follow the same rules as the other jobs, but need to be quested for individually.

Also, your skillsets/spells remain constant, but may or may not be used depending on your main/sub job. If you play a warrior and get 1h sword to 45 (skill lvl) and you choose a Redmage, your 1hs skill will be soft capped for the low levels, but you won't have to practive to have the skill increase.

I'm sure there is more to tell, but if you have any other questions, ask away :)

What about your basic stats that alter according to your main job. They get soft capped also? So even though your strength gets boosted when you first selected Warrior for example, if you switched to a WTM for a while, your Str will be reduced to the MAX is could be at that lvl? If you were to switch back to a Warrior, your Str would now pop back up to where it was and your Int that was growing during your Mage romp, would be capped for the Warrior? Just trying to understand how the system works.

I have a question about the Summoner job. I read it was not an expansion job so therefore don't you have to be at least lvl18 to get that quest? I saw ppl who are about that lvl or a lil higher that are summoners.

You have to be lieve 30 to get the summoner job. Once you get it, you have to start levelling it again from level 1, like every other job.

Smmoner is one of those jobs that almost totally isn't worth doing unless you already have a level 65 character, also. If you don't have a level 60-65 character who can fight, and thus recieve, the other summons, you're going to be levelling for 60 levels with just carbunkle.

Josher: Correct, the stats change per your job.

As for summoner, seems like a pretty bunk job as of now. Carbuncle doesn't seem to do much damage (maybe I haven't seen what it can do at higher levels) and having a summoner/whm seems like just being a crippled whm since summoner's can't get all the different summons without the expansion/higher levels.

Summoner is not an expansion job, however it is an ADVANCED JOB, which means you still have to do the quest at level 30 to get it.
