Just about everyone knows that summons are looked to mainly for their support abilities, allowing anyone who should wield their power to be an excellent support player if used with the proper sub job. However, Summons aren't known only for their support abilities. Anyone who's played through the Final Fantasy series should be aware of the great destructive power they brought to a person's team, wreaking havoc on their enemies. Even now, when earning a summon you must endure their wrath. So besides all their wonderful support and healing abilities. What kind of destructive power do these creatures posess?
(sigh, i'm a bad writer. >.<)

First of all this is not the same as the normal series. Summons are pets, and pets are not supposed to be overpowered. Summons won't be the strongest thing in the game... mainly because if they were everyone would want to be a summoner.
Summons CAN nuke and hit really hard, but the MP cost isn't that enticing. There's certain summon abilities to be unlocked/added that will probably suite you well. Heavenly Strike is supposed to be in the game, just not at the current level cap.

I realize that their pets and shouldn't be overpowered, but I also realzie summons weren't put into the game to look pretty and heal/buff the party. Carbuncle alone can do that. I'm just looking for some insight into what kind of damage they can do compared to blackmages since each summon has a attack spell according to which element it represents.

Sorry to burst your bubble but the first Caller/Summoner Summons actually did do effect magic. Back in Final Fantasy 3 the Conjurer aka Caller had a chance to cast one of two spells when they summoned a monster. One was an effect spells while the other was a low powered damage spell. When you upgraded to Summoner you also got the massively powerful damage spell as well.
Example:
Shiva:
1: Hypno Beam - Casts Sleep on all enemies.
2: Icy Glare - Ice-elemental attack on one enemy.
3: Diamond Dust - Ice-elemental attack on all enemies.

I have a list of all the summons currently in FFXI on my computer, and along with a wide array of support spells, each summon has some sort of elemental attack. What I'm trying to ask is how strong these attacks are compared to black mage spells, such as Garuda's Aero IV or Ifrit's Fire II. I never said they didn't have effect magic. I just want to know how strong their attack magic is.

I agree with Spellbinder. Summons do have attack spells look at all the pics or movies with summons in it. The summons are attacking. So we do know they attack in game.
All Spellbinder wants to know how effective and powerful attacks can be. Same as people wanted to know effects of a weapon or black spell.
(We know now they are good in supportive magic. But believe me if Summoners were just another white mage, than they would need to be a separate job! Samurai or Ninja may be offshoots of warrior but it doesn't mean they are totally the same. They have additional strengths and weaknesses.) To me White Mage is not a exciting job to start off and I know you need it for sub to effective summoner. If all summoner was is another healer, its not a worthwhile job. Just healing in game or supporting other characters is boring. Square wouldn't make a summoner job boring. If a actual summoner in beta or import can verify this for me!

Thank you Kalel!! Now, if there are any importers or beta testers who could enlighten us on the subject, we'd truly be grateful.

I've read that before, but it still doesn't quite answer my question on how strong their offensive skills are such as Garuda's Aero IV, Ifrit's Fire IV, or Titan's Megalith Throw. :(
