Can someone please explain linkshell?

i think i have an idea of what it is and ive researched tons of sites all about ffxi and i understand about everything except Linkshell and also Worldpass(which i have a very very good guess at what it is but i was just wanting it confirmed). Well their u have a question. thx to whoever responds

Linkshells are sorta like buddy lists, they allow you t okeep track of who is playing who isn't. Least that's how I understand it. Worldpasses allow you to control the server you join. Essentially you and your friend buy the game, and end up on different servers. One buys a worldpass, allowing the other to make a new character, and go to the server it was bought on.

After careful research about FFXI and this site, i found something astomashing!! Apparently, this site and many others have a simply ingenious called a "search" feature.

No, Linkshells are not like buddy lists. FFXI automatically provides you with a "buddy list" called a Friends List. Linkshells are used to form clans. At least that's what 99% of the players use them for. In reality, they're just another form of communication in-game so a group of people can talk to eachother no matter where they are without having to be in the same party. Someone buys a Linkpearl for some 6000 or so gil and generates pearls to give to friends or people he wishes to join his/her clan. The person with the original Linkpearl can generate Linkpearls, kick anyone out of the Linkshell, and designate sack holders who can also generate pearls and kick members of the Linkshell. The sack holders can't kick out the original pearl distributer, however.

As for World Passes, they pretty much explained it already. Someone wants to get onto another server so they, somehow, contact someone on the server they want to join to let them know they need a World Pass. That person buys a world pass and gives the number to the person who requested it. He then creates a new character and inputs the World Pass number and the character is placed on that server. You can not move an existing character onto another server.
