Does anyone have a list of monsters I can charm. I almost got killed when I tried to charm a walking tree and a damselfly!

well...
here's a partial list of monsters you can't charm:

Orcs
Quadavs
Yagudos
Goblins
Giants
Weapons
Undead (skeletons, zombie wolves, ghosts, etc)
NMs
{pretty much any enemy with greater than animal intelligence}

charming is based on CHR for success...
failed charms result in, as you may know, the monster attacking you...
if you try to tame a monster you can not tame, there is a chance of a temporary bind effect, but they will attack you regardless...

Umm, what?

I was under the impression everything was charmable. I'd really like a reason to play a beast tamer, but they sound like they totally suck.

and not to mention that you can't charm anything in sight, it has to be withing a certain level range of you. And I'm guessing unless your bst is around lv 35+ that you shouldn't be able to charm a walking tree.
I don't believe you can charm very hard monsters (not sure what the names of rating system in EN are called) but it only charms them for a second before they are released and attack you again.

I've never played bst, but I believe when fighting you are supossed to charm things slightly below your level or less. Maybe, possibly your level.

if a beast tamer could tame any kind of monster, it would be the most strongest job. Imagine a BST having serket as his tamed monster, fighting all his battles for him.

No no I use my whm to charm powerful foes with bst as sub so that walking tree says its weak and has low evasion and yet its uncharmable. I also noticed that a "Real" BST is better at charming than a sub one ^_^

sure real bst is better. you can only tame something around your BST's level.

so basicly you can only tame something half your level with sub bst. 60WHM/30BST = tame level 30 monsters.

umm, ok, here is what I've heard about beast masters...

they can only tame certain monsters

it only works for a certain period of time...

ok, they suck, they really really suck. if they removed 1 of these two things, then they wouldn't suck.

basically, it makes sense that you can't tame stuff above your level, but for most things to just be uncharmable, that is dumb... oh well, screw em I guess.

Actually I'd have to say that there are far more charmable monsters than uncharmable ones. They may not be the strongest monsters in the area, although I find a lot of times, they are quite strong enough (The sheep in Ronfure are definately the strongest things there, and the the Sheep and Akabas in La Thein are nothing to scoff at. There are some nice powerful Tigers in Jugner that can kill things quickly too). You should never have a problem finding something to tame.

I've been all around the San Doria, Bastok, Jeuno, and Windurst areas, and there are way more "beast" type monsters than there are things like Orcs, Quadavs, Yagudo, Undead, etc. Its only really in dungeons that there are more uncharmable things, but even then there's still plently of things like Bats, Mushrooms, Lizards, and stuff like that to tame. Not to mention the BST's ability to call monsters with summon stones.

I'm planning on giving the Beastmaster class a try sometime soon...it seems like an interesting job, but obviously it will have a rocky start. I think what you really need to do is start with a high defense/HP job (like Paladin or Monk), take that to a high level, THEN begin working on BST and it won't be quite so hard

BST is not suck... it has it's own way of playing. it's easy enough to see what monster you can tame. anything that is an *animal* you can tame them all. and if their level is not higher than you, you can keep them charmed for a long long time.

my PT got 6 crabs linked before... we were all expecting a sure death...
a BST came alone...
tamed 1 crab and brought it back to it's place and released it
then came back to tamed another, brought it away and released it
then another
then another
then another
... at the end we just have 1 crab to fight....
really amazing

when you release a monster it doesn't attack you??

also, how long do you mean by a long time? and can you re-tame it right afterwards? I've asked this question like 12 times on this forum with no response so far heh.

once BST got the "release" ability they can release monster safely. the monster will stay still for like 30 seconds maybe before it will start moving again. if it's an aggressive enemy and the BST is too close, yes it will attack again. but for non-aggressive it won't.

BST in my PT tamed a onaji enemy (same level) and it followed us for like 20 minutes until the BST released it. pretty long. don't know how long can it last
