When Im not playing WHM im usually messing around with my Thief (clvl 31). Wondering what good subs are there.. these are some ive tried.
<<Warrior>> ive tried.. I like it very much and taunt is great for back up just in case (usually theres already a warrior around). But lately ive noticed when I get hit.. it usually hurts. Im sure double attack would be a plus side to this.
<<Monk>> My favorite at the moment. I like the added HP and stats and It also also has counter. It kicks in every once in a while but is still a great asset to have. I switch between grapple and dagger a lot and having monk as sub is great for the grapple with their martial arts passive ability.
<<Dark Knight>>.... My advice to all upcoming thiefs is don't EVEN TRY. I wasted a lot of time lvling Drk to 15 just to try it as a sub.. Its pitiful in my opinion as a sub but indeed an impressive main job.
<<White mage>>... Only good for soloing, most Pt's don't want any attackers to sit down after fights to keep TP up.
<<Black mage>>... Casting attack magic is always fun and make some monsters easier that casts defensive magic before they die making it hard for meleers to hit them ( like snippers in valkurm). Bad part is your magic will be to weak and won't do much damage. Pt's won't want you to sit and refill MP all the time.
<<Ninja>> This one has caught my eye. I just finished the ninja quests last night and I am looking forward to trying this as a sub. Although you really don't get any good active abilities you get ninjetsu magic plus the ability to duel wield two weapons. Wielding two daggers is the only reason why I would want to sub this job really. ( If anyone has high lvl Thf/nin sub I wan't to know everything about it ^^ *Cough* Jei *Cough*)
The abilities of subs can change as the main gets higher in lvl. I know this... so I know I might possibly ending up using warrior as sub instead of mnk later down the road. But if anyone else out there has experience or just general opinions let me know. Im always glad to hear them.
Im all ears ^^

Well i'm close to my sub job is there any other advanced jobs that will do the trick till level 30 (Expansion jobs)? Thanks for the info though ^^ and dont forget Samurai I heard that was a great sub job for Thief.

As soon as I muster up some friends I'll probably try to do the samurai quest and lvl it up some as a sub.
Although from I heard samurai's awesome ability to gain TP quick is only if they are the main job. But non the less.. could be quite fun and interesting as a sub who knows.
/sam still adds some TP bonus too. not so much tho
right now i really like /nin... I feel sad tho my ninja is only 23 :( im a 54thf/23nin right now. my level really pops out in the search list where everyone else got sub job 27. im too lazy to level up ninja :P
still i'll keep using /nin :)

I'm a thf/mnk and I like it a lot. You hit the nail on the head of why it's so great.
I know a thf/war who I hear nothing but praises from, not for provoke of course(always lots of wars on cactaur) but for the skills later in their career.
i only know one thf/blm, and He's been practicing magic bursts, I don't know how well that's working out for him, but I do agree if he times it right, that would be some nice added dmg for the small fee of a subjob, and since thieves are basically the best dmg dealers i can't really argue with him(although I did at first).
That's my little addition :)
^^ let me add some more good thing about /ninja
1. super safe pull! woo~ as a THF 90% of the PT always let me pull. with level 12 ninutsu mirror image I can avoind any incoming attack during the process ^^ sometimes i can just stand around evading 3-4 hits while avoiding links.
Also, the real *great* part is, the ninjtsu wil help me evade even magics ;) Bind can never got me and I even dodge flood once.
2. WS become more powerful. my fast blade hits for 3 hits and viperbite does extra 60-100 damage when i duel wield :)
I also heard that dancing edge will hit 1 more extra time with duel wield too.
now as THF I never want to take any hits at all as a matter of fact ^^ I'm wearing leaping boots and emporer wing so my defense really is so weak. /ninja just suites me so much. I gain 2 bonus from 2 weapons, get some nice ninjutsu to avoind hits and looks so cool :)
I probably should level up MNK and NIN some more tho. now my MNK is too low for my PT to fight skelletons and my NIN is quite a too low....

Hehe, well Im glad jei is raising the the main class and both subs Im looking at. Seeing as how he looks em both, cant be a bad choice either hehe.
hehe yea. mnk is always nice to have for THF. just today before i posted the above messege my PT was planning to kill skellies in GL for exp. and i told them my monk is only level 9.
they were all like "noooooo that'l be impossible" (ooow... i felt so guilty)
so we go hunt crabs in kuftal instead ^^; and we used the ol renkei whatever>viper bite for water/ice effects instead.
/mnk is a must when fight skelletons really. but for 2-3 weeks that was the only time my PT asked me to use /mnk tho ^^;
some more add. WAR's double attack *can* affect WS. doubles your WS power. really really great. not happen so often tho :)

Thanks everyone for posting.. I really appreciated your thoughts and reading them was quite intertaining.
Thanks Jei.. what you said about the ninja makes me even more excided about using it as a sub. Xtra dmg with WS is nice indeed. Lvl 8 ninja right now.. can't wait !!
Fighting Skele's is one reason why I max out my dagger as well as grapple... never know when your going to be fighting them and monk makes perfect sub for that.
Question about warriors double attack.. by having it as a sub will the theif have 2 different chances to either to triple attk or double attk...or will triple just overide double making it useless?
Thanks!
I still have 1 more level to go for tripple attack ^^ But I guess they both can work together. hmmm maybe not in the same swing tho.

jei if its not too much of a problem can u keep me updated on yur Thf/Nin combo i was thinking about lvling a Thf/Monk then Thf/Nin or Nin/Monk later on but im still deciding ... *i hope that wasnt too hard to read* ... and i was wondering would i be taking too much of a risk as making galka the race of my choice *i dont wanna be like everyone else and go w/ mithra as the race of choice for these particular job combos* ... thanks in advance
being a galka isn't bad ^^ in the end all THF ended up using tons of +DEX and +accuracy items anyway ;) i don't think race will matter that much.
for me, I just love my THF using dagger :) so unless i need rangeki (skill 125 grapple WS) I'll never use MNK ^^
so in PT i only use /nin. and /war if my PT request so.
when solo i go for /ranger for NM search, or /whm when i hunt chests ^^ (just got 7 life belt today... I feel so happy to play THF hehehe)

Meh Im going mithra because thats what race I liked the best. Thief is what I always planned to be hehe. /mnk, /rng, /whm /nin, /war were the subjobs I would play around with -- also plan on maxing whitemage first however since they wont be exactly overpopulated early on :)
I was curious on somethings though Jei. It says a ninja gets parry. If I use Thf/nin will my thief be able to parry or does that not apply? Also, what and how effective is stealth per se?
Thx in advance :)
hmmm THF already got an A skill for evasion and parry. so.... I don't know what skill rank is ninja. (I hardly got attacked at all tho ^^; don't think it matter that much unless you're soloing)
wait. not sure which parry you're talking about, so... here's some THF's skill ranking
guard - THF got no skill for it. mainly MNK's skill
evasion - A
shield - F
parry with weapon - A
ninja also got A evasion and A parry. but can't use shield

Oops I mustve overlooked Thief parry. Okie well that answers that then.
Anyways, how is stealth and what exactly does it do? Lower monster agression range or something of similiar effect?

Well, let me add something.
I am currently a 50THF/25NIN on the titan server. (actually I am Jei's friend and started playing this game cuz of him.. lol)
The problem for me about /nin is, I don't have money for the ninjatsu bags T.T ..... the mirror ninjatsu thingy bags cost about 13k per 99 .... so..
Thus, what has been annoying me is lack of abilities from my sub > . <
Now i am really interested in /sam after I reach lv60 (10 more to go.. yay)
The reason is only the lv30 samurai charging TP ability. Imagin you are fighting a tote2 and doing a renkei. Your fuidama dancing edge dishes out 1200 dmg lets say(forgive me if i am wrong.. i dont know if we can do that much), and the fight after that, while everyone has 0% TP, you click your charging tp macro then throw another 1200 dmg dancing.. hmm ..
Correct me if i am wrong.. its just my stupid imagination.. lol
Another nice thing is the lv15 samurai ability avoiding next dmg. This would be a nice toy when you are pulling something ^-^v
So, after I hit 60, I will try to up my sam to 30 and see how it goes~ now i will stick with thf/nin for a while.
Just another thought ~

Actually its not stupid kanomjeeb.. you have some very interesting points there. When you start let us know your progress on the /sam sub.
I just started using 2 daggers with my thief/nin recently and am loving it.. I just look soooOOOoo cool. Not as high as yours or Jei's but i'll eventually get there. Sure is more enjoyable than thief/mnk indeed it is

Isn't using grapples just the same as the Ninja's weapon?....Or more damage?

Ninja's dual wielding is faster if you are using the grapple without /mnk, but if you are a high lv thf/mnk or mid-high lv mnk, your grapple delay will be a lot lower due to the mnk's passive ability. Any high lv thf uses grapple anyway? (unless you are talking about fighting bone or PT need your grapple for renkei).
I do not know how fast they are at high lv (never pay attention when having mnk in the pt.. lol .. doing yokodama is enough to keep me busy)
So, if you don't /mnk, i personally believe that dual wield deals more dmg.
Another good thing is you get 2 stats from 2 dagger (now I am using 2 bone knifes, so I am getting like 10 accuracy and 10 attack or something can't really remember).
Using dagger is still the way to go for lv33+ thf (for viper bite WS).

Gawd, THF is alot more effort than I thought, so many different subjobs that you can use with it. Me personally, I'm sticking with Thief/Monk until LVL33 when I can use Viper Bite Weapon Skill with my dagger(per advice from my Titan buddies=P), then going Warrior all the way. I'm much too lazy to level Ninja, or even complete the Q for that matter.;)

I use grapples my PT doesn't usually tell me to use them either. I just like the double damage and it does about 200 damage right now with my Weapon Skill and 100 with one hand sword.

I meant you need to be high lv enough to shorten your interval of your grapple to make it comparable to dual wield from /nin.
I am talking about lv 60+ which you can /mnk lv30 and get martial arts 3(I assume that you are lower than lv30? from your sig ^^; ).
After lv60, we get dancing edges WS attacking 5 times. I still almost never seen any full AF thf carring the grapple.
and grapple skill for thf like we all know, it is E while dagger is A. :)
