PC Beta Install Problem and a Fix

Hi,

I just wanted to let others escape the frustration I've had for the last few hours trying to get the PC Beta installed successfully.

Successfully installed the PlayOnline Viewer. It works.

Load in Disc 1 of FFXI and launches install
Proceed with install

Installation asks for Disc 2 - as soon as I push the eject button on the CD-Rom, I got an error that said the wrong disk was in the volume and that I needed to replace it. It was asking for Disc 1 again. The install was NOT still reading from Disc 1 when I hit the eject button. Clicking retry, cancel, or continue on that error message does not work. Since the box askign for Disc 2 is still up, I tried ignoring the error message and clicking continue on that box. That does not work.

I repeated this process 3 times, each with the same end result. Since the PC has a CD-Rom and a CD-RW, I also tried installing from the CD-RW with the same result.

What finally worked was copying the contents of each CD to one folder (I called it FFInstall) on the hard drive. Since each CD has some files that have the same name, just choose not to overwrite them.

Installing from that folder went without error and without prompting except for asking for disc 1 at the very end (which it does normally) and you can just click OK and it proceeds and finishes.

BTW, this is on my work PC. I successfully installed it on my home PC last night, so I know the discs are good.

Operating System is Win2k

Another workaround might be to right click on your cd drive, and then click eject. Windows 2000/xp fouls up detecting new discs sometimes :3.

RAR! My patience for this game is dwindling so much now. Probably won't get the pc beta till Monday or Tuesdays thanks to 4th of July and most liekly no weekend deliveries. So whoever gets it lets get some pics posting of the cool menus and whatnot!

I had the same problems installing the import. I had to insert disk one for a few secs everytime it asked for me to insert a new disk.

why would he bother to write a guide explaining how to get through a problem found in the setup process if he was just trying to fudge with us? plus, the chances of him having the beta are high; Square Enix already told us earlier in the week that the Beta has begun for PC users.

It makes sense, though. They did announce that the beta started and when the beta started for PS2 testers, that is when they began shipping.

Same could be said for why someone would post a *supposed* translation to english patch for the import ffxi that turned out to be a virus. For the simple reason that some ppl like to screw around with you guys.

Now I have heard of no one else getting the beta kits yet, an not just on this site either. Believe no one ;) until its been confirmed.

I'm not looking to discredit the guy who says he got his, but I was accepted to the original beta. When July 1st rolled around, I found it kinda odd that I hadn't recieved my kit, so I mailed playOnline; here's the e-mail, unedited(well, I took my full name out, but thats all):

Sorry for the delay in reply fueling to possible speculation that I'm not legit.

I assure you that I did have this problem. I've tried installing it on 3 PC's and failed completely on the first*, had no issues on the second, then had the issue I described with the CD Rom's on the 3rd (one at work).

My motive for posting was that I can see in your posts that you are dying to get in and play. Instead of possibly wasting 3 hours fighting this issue, I want you to be in-game, so I can ask you stupid questions :)

The fact that I only have 3 posts is indicative of the fact that I'm totally new to FFXI.

*first PC (running XP Home -yuck! ) that I tried to install on, I couldn't get the PlayOnline Viewer to launch. Just got a box that said PlayOnline Viewer with a big red X in it. It appeared to be a rights issue, but since I have 3 PC's at home, I just bagged that one and moved to my secondary. I had admin rights and tried with another login with admin rights, but no go. Wanted to get in-game, not troubleshoot. At work, I had time to troubleshoot.

Off to the Beta!

Since I see others running around in-game, surely someone can verify that there is a clueless noob with my moniker running around the newbie area getting his butt kicked by orcs.

Maybe you didn't understand my post. I told my friend to check if he was playing or not, so he sent him a /tell and got a positive response. Unless there's another Stain on these boards accepted into a beta or, for some odd reason, he told someone with the beta to make a character with the name Stain and, for some odd reason, this person accepted ( ... ), than that was really him.

I am new to this forum and I didn't realize that this was a known issue with a previous release. I would think that a bug like this, had it been already known, would have been fixed. My apologies for not knowing that.

Yes, you are allowed to take and post screenshots. The only thing you can not take a picture of and post is the beta kit and the HDD. Hakori/Bondelas posted some of his pics of him in beta, I've posted my own pics I took while it playing over his house, and I believe Keftenk took some. I'll definately be posting a lot more when I get my own kit, too.

A guidmate/friend of mine who is currently playing the PS2 version spoke with a GM about a week ago in-game. He had asked the GM if it was against NDA to take SS's and post them on the net. The GM replied, saying that it was not against NDA to do so. To take a shot press 'Scroll Lock' then 'Print Screen' on your keyboard while in-game.

If I'm not mistaken, pressing scroll lock makes the menus disappear in-game?

So how would you be able to tell the difference between PS2 and the Win Beta screenshots? Is the differing graphic quality obvious?

Just press Print Screen and paste the screen shot on Paint or something that lets you make images and save it to your computer and then post it here

The graphics do differ slightly, but otherwise, I don't think there's any real way to tell. You could take a screenshot of you going to FFXI on your start menu or something. You could also open up the config and take a screenshot of that, showing it's English.

Well, first off, I would like to laugh at those expecting a tracking number any time soon. Those are literally IMPOSSIBLE to get. I've ordered so many things off the net, and asked for my tracking number...I usually get a reponse the day before it hits my doorstep. Some people are lucky, and get their tracking number first. Anyway, some people do have no life, and create programs like that. "LOOK ITZ TEH FFXI ONLINE CONFIG." I don't doubt he has it, and I believe him. I know I was one of those unlucky people to be denied again from FFXI because of all the IRC n00b. "OMG DUDE LOOK FFXI PROMOTION OMFGGGGGGGGGGG GIVE IT 2 UR FRIENDS SO WE WILL NEVER GET A CHANCE!!" Heh. UPS is slow. After looking at the package times, I've always had special(rush) delivery. Never got charged for night ships either. It's just like 5-6 bucks more. Anyway, with special delivery, it took 3 days for it to actually move from it's original camping ground. :( It was no where near a holiday. It took 5 days for my product to reach it's original destination. And this is with special delivery.

Like I said, I wasn't accepted into FFXI, no doubt. But, since I got denied twice, all I can say it...Screw FFXI until the gold release.. And, with that...I say...BRING ON CHAOS LEGION!!

It's not a tracking number. It's the reference number. It's on the package when UPS delivers it. Anyone who recieves it via UPS should be able to provide a tracking number for the package. As for the programming thing, I don't doubt someone is crazy enough to do that. I even thought, "It would be real fucked up if he just programmed something to look like the config window," but I've never heard of that happening. Ever. And when it does, my faith in humanity will drop from 0 to -75%

Why would the North American version of the game have the Japanese lettering "Final Fantasy XI" under it? Seems highly unlikely to me. It's not impossible to think that, but I haven't seen that addition to any of the copies of the logo on the official site. And it just seems pointless to me to include it.

Not to mention the fact that no one else on GameFAQs or any other site has claimed to receive their kits yet.

Also, one of the beta testers on the shadow-dragons website spoke with a GM and she said that Square was allowing screenshots of the game to be posted. So don't worry about losing your beta just for posting an in-game shot. ;)

Everyone and their mothers know that you can photoshop something like that, but there's a point where you have to just stop making up excuses and say "maybe he is telling the truth." I mean, it is possible. There's a very high probability that he actually has recieved his beta kit. It's not completely out of the question. You can photoshop 99% of the things posted on this board, but you're the one who chooses to believe it is what it appears to be.

Once again with the Photoshop thing. I'm not going to repeat myself. Just look up. As for the in-game menu screenshots, I don't think any of you would believe him even if he did post it up. You'd either say it was photoshoped or he just took a screen shot of the PS2 beta.

As for your theory, it's majorly flawed due to the fact that importers do not have the ability to log on to the beta server. Besides, my friend sent him a /tell to confirm his existance on the server, so he is, in fact, playing the beta. So, whether or not you want to believe it's the PS2 beta or the PC beta is up to you.

Also, keep in mind that it's very easy to photoshop something like that, but it's even easier to just make a crappy low quality jpeg.

I think the largest piece of evidence that this IS a fake is the fact that NO ONE else has received their beta...I mean what did Square do ship just one copy to this guy and then ship everyone elses a week later. I think its virtually impossible for no one else to have theirs yet if they shipped, so I still think this guy isnt for real.......once more than one person has it then we can talk......plus how bought some pictures if the CD, manual shipping box anything but an in game menu.......I was accepetd by Square over a month ago and I havent seen mine yet!

That's what the Screenshot Request forum is for. However, you all are asking him to prove he has the Windows beta kit. I, honestly, don't care whether he has it or not because my beta kit is comming regardless. I've simply repeated the evidence he's provided and added something to it. Now, it's simply up to you to believe him or not. I believe he has it, but I'm not trying to change all of your beliefs since it doesn't concern me and, even if I was trying to change your beliefs, you wouldn't give since some of you are actually putting more time and effort into finding anything wrong with it than he would have if he were making it up.

He's not the only beta tester that has supposedly gotten his Windows beta kit, either. People have been saying they've seen and talked to Windows beta testers in game, but there's no proof that they are Windows beta testers. So, believe what you will. If he's lying, he's lying to all of us regardless of whether you believe him or not and the people insisting he has the kit are wrong. If he's telling the truth, the people insisting he doesn't have the beta kit are wrong. Then we move on. I believe he has it, but there's always a possibility he doesn't. I'm not going to force or insist you all believe him.

I would like to clarify one item - "alternative means" in no way means the theft, purchase, hacking, or hijacking someone else's Beta.

The PC Beta commenced on July 1st, right? Surely someone had it that day, i.e., those that didn't have to wait on shipping? Members of the press, possibly fan site owners, friends, family, etc. I'm in one of those groups.

To respond to a couple of the people who say 'you will never be satisfied'. No, some of us won't. Want to know why? Because we've seen this BS for every single beta test we've been in. People pull this all the time. We KNOW he didn't get the beta kit because no one else has. We KNOW that associates of square arent' going to post about such a thing on a website, because we've worked for those types of companies and know the common rules for those corporations.

2. post a pic of the in game menus, they are very hard to photoshop, very easy to see the mistakes that can be made, and there are probably differences between the in game screens for ps2 and windows.

Since the ps2 betas have been sent, you can find out the server addresses that are being used and just change the config file. Mmorpgs that are already out have emulators run by people (it's not legal of course), to connect to their servers, you go through a similar, very easy, process.

This explaination is a lot more viable than him actually getting some sort of early beta kit when he won't even offer proof. People who do this, need to get kicked from the boards, seriously. They only incite flame wars and spread misinfo.

While it's true that the vast majority (99%) are still waiting for their Beta to be shipped, it doesn't mean that a lucky few are participating. Especially since we know the Beta has already commenced (past tense). To stubbornly believe that NO one is participating in a Beta that has "commenced" almost a week ago is just silly.

Also, I know well over 600 PC testers on different boards and its rather amusing hes the *only* person out of all of them to get his beta. 71 of those people live in Southern Cali, So it cant be location.

Then, He post config menus etc. Easily doctored, and Genrou you said it yourself ;). Whats more proof, he has YET to provide a refernce number even when asked multiple times.

He also said he didnt care about an NDA, then goes and deletes his post because all of the sudden he cares? And whats more amusing, the NDA only prevents you from posting the hardware, NOT pictures! All the beta testers know this if they are on.

Show me an ingame menu, with english text, AND the battle menu where the text is DISPLAYED, and I might believe, otherwise your just doing what others do when betas go out : Claim to have something you dont.

You guys are freaking nuts! I never said any such thing. Only after I found tons of screenshots posted on this site AND posters others assured me it was ok, did I post 1 in-game screenshot and 2 shots of my own desktop.

What others perceived as avoiding questions was me worrying about the NDA.

Exactly how I feel currently. I was a bit pessismistic at first, but I honestly don't care anymore. The more the merrier as far as beta goes. So I hope to get to play with Stain as much as I hope to play with everyone else in the beta. :D

Heh. You really don't know anything. You don't know if anyone else has recieved their beta kit or not. And I'm not sure who you're referring to as we since most of these people aren't even old enough to work, much less work for "those types of companies." Yes, people pull this type of shit all the time, but that doesn't mean this has to be one of those cases. Besides, different companies have different policies and, unless you've worked for or associated with Square-Enix, you don't know what associates of Square-Enix would post. Besides, it's original intent wasn't to tell people he had the kit, but to propose a solution to a problem that might possibly arise when installing the kit.

If that were the case, than World Passes would be obsolete. I know of player run EQ servers, but I've never heard of people editing a file to connect them to another company run server, EQ or otherwise. Once again, you're implying there was a lot of work put into fooling us all for a five second laugh, which I doubt anyone has the patience and time to do. Seriously, find someone who's learned, bored, and childish/insane enough to take a take three screenshots, two of Windows and one in-game, edit them, fnd the config file which holds the server info, sift through the garbled mass of computer language to find the point where he inputs a new server and change it so he can log on to the beta server. Which I believe is impossible due to the coding of the game, CD keys, the free Content IDs which are purchased on the beta server, and the fact that the server a character is on is bound to the character information, which means it's stored on Square-Enix's side. So, really, you're implying that he hacked Square-Enix's servers, found his config file, and editted it so he may log onto Cactuar.
