Ok this is getting to the point of madness. I've been playing in the Valkurm dunes for 6 straight hours and I can't get a ghoul skull. It's an absolute joke. Perhaps because this is a beta they haven't worked all the kinks out, but this is causing me all manner of trouble. I don't understand why this is such a rediculous quest. And the bottlenecking is getting worse. More people are starting to search there than there are people who are completing the quest.
The worst problem is that in the Gungsen mines, the guys are 1) way too hard, and 2) they hardly ever drop the skull. This sites says that it's best to go there with level 30's to get it for you, only problem is, there's only a handful of people that have even cracked level 20!! Please some experienced players, this is driving me and many other players to the point of quitting this game till a better solution can be found. Please help in any way possible!

The problem with the subjob quest is that everybody is around level 18, so everybody is looking for the last ghoul item. A full alliance of people around 18 should probably be able to take on the Ghouls in the Gusgen mine, although I haven't actually tried doing that myself (A party of six level 14's can handle the Skeleton Warriors in Gusgen so I don't see how an alliance can't take on a Ghoul).
Perhaps you should shout in Selbina asking other party leaders if they want to form an alliance and head for Gusgen. If you do, make sure you set the rules for lotting to prevent confusion and fighting when the item drops.
If you don't want to do that, then the best thing to do is wait for the competition to simmer down by leveling up your future sub job.

A friend of mine is a theif and he said he was in a group that got 8 skulls in one night. This may be abnormal, but it may also be due to the theives passive ability to make treasure drop. Next time you go skull hunting, try having a theif in your party, this may help what little ghouls you kill to have a higher chance at dropping what you need to complete the quest.
competition really make things look worse than it really does....
I remember hunting for key for kazam passport when it released about 30 hours straight.... the key never drops. I was so angry.
then nowadays there's no competition anymore. When i help my friends getting the key we usually get it in 10 minutes....

ok my suggestions
1. if you don't have a thief--get one
2. if you got a thief--get another one
. ) and just keep trying..
i'd post my subjob story here but you'd get so jealous dude.. it was so efficient it was freaky
bottom line? 1 hour, per complete set, per 6 members . )

I wish I was Rollchan, she got hers in the first hour of ghoul hunting because the group deemed it the "Gentlemanly thing to do." Im going on four days, whenever one drops, the newest person to the party gets it then leaves, so ya how do I form a party with the loot option being I pick that I get it, youd do the same.

What I might do, is whoevers with me the longest, is Ill get it, then they get it, so on, cuz I make parties with lots, the most recent to join always gets it then is like "GTG Im, a bitch." Yes they even use that pause.

My new outlook on this game has been molded by this quest alone. Game is damn boring, repetitive, competitive and stupid. If you cant stand any of the following, you will have a lil fun, but at 18, just quit. I might play but this quest is damned impossible.

Gusgen mines and 2+ thieves...
That is the secret. Ghouls 24hrs a day. Great exp. I lead a 8 member alliance in there (all level 16-19) and got a couple of skulls. Everyone for some reason is scared of that place and its actually quite appropriate for skull hunting. I know the secret of doing it too, after several hours of killing ghouls there I know how to make a party become an efficient ghoul killing machiene. If you are on cactuar, I would be happy to take you to the mines and show you how its done. You provide the party and the 2+ thieves and I will provide the knowledge...

There are only two quests so far that are REALLY ANNOYING. Subjob quest is one of them, the other is the chocobo liscense quest. The subjob quest is by far the more annoying of the two. Keep at it, you will get your skull. Remember you are also soaking up some sweet exp while looking for this skull.

OK Rorics tips(I Finally got it!) OK.
1.) Stay with one group, do it in one sitting.
2.) Stick to Valkurm, the mines bring nothing but death and long waits(Barely any skulls drop their.)
3.) Have a thief(We had 2 drop in a row when my thief friend joined.)
4.) Cast your fastest spell on it, its faster then a warrior can draw his sword.
5.) Do it with people you trust, not strangers.
Hope these help you not take 4 days like I did.

Smart warriors can use Provoke :P It's much faster than drawing your sword and you can hotkey it......so it's super fast :D
I think it has less range than a spell though, so mages may have the upper hand in snagging ghouls :P
I'm also starting to collect the peices for subclass quest, I am lvl 15 (halfway to lvl 16) and if you see me on, I'd be more than happy to go ghoul hunting :)

haha, sounds fun! but here's some tips:
a) those people who made 30+, make them your friends
b) chill out. always keep in mind that us importers are slaving away with the language barriers ^_~
c) have fun with it. if you don't get that ghoul item, go level your other jobs, i guaruntee you by the time you have all your jobs at lvl 18, there will be people who are your friends who are high lvl'd enough to help!
d) this is more of a comment: "neener neener neener! you can't get your skull item! baaaaaaahahahahahhaha!"
enjoy the beta ^_~

Please tell me how to marco it (provoke, target). I have no idea how to macro in this game.

Llama, to macro provoke you do something like /ja <ability in kanji> <t> . Finding the ability in kanji can be the hardest part... there are two ways you can do it (I think) I believe the ability name starts with cho (chohatsu) so you can enter cho in JP then use tab and hopefully find it, or try spacebar. If that doesn't work, you can try the the tab menu and once of those options should have the taunt ability.
For the SJ item, you really need to get a group together for gusgen. On Lakshmi there isn't a terrible amount of competition for the ghouls in valkurm.... the ghouls simply are way rare. Once we had a 6 people group searching the whole area and found zero ghouls at all, and this was during hours when very little JP were on. The guide is wrong about needing a 30+ group for gusgen. (Maybe 1 30+ person if you aren't with a group) I went there with a balanced group of 18-20 and the hunting went fine. If you bring a 15+ thief with you the skull drop isn't too rare either. And the best thing is there are plenty of ghouls in gusgen.
