Well.. only if you want to play the PC version with a PS2 Dual Shock controller. (which I do) I ordered this weeks ago in anticipation for FFXI and the PC Beta. It also works with PSX emulators and other Apps designed to support PSX game controllers. Being able to play an MMORPG with a controller is a big plus for me. I probably should have posted this up sooner, and I'm sure some others have somewhere on the boards. Here's another one if you don't care for the one linked above.

Hah. That's pritty cool. I was wondering about a controller for my PC if I was accepted for Beta. Do you know if you were accepted? Please don't tell me the acceptance E-mails were sent out already(for the second chance).....
EDIT: Never mind that last part...... You just threw me off by what you said.
Yep, I got the KiKY X-Series in anticipation. Oddly enough though, I found out about it through my motherboard's manufacturer, Soyo.

I think it's a bit more expensive.

For PC games that have rumble features...does that translate for a PS2 adaptor as well? Or does anybody know? I'm considering picking it up, although I've always been more than content with a mere mouse and keyboard for my MMORPGs. :P

Yes, the Kiky X-series PS2 gamepad adapter supports controller rumble features.

Nah I'll be using my Xbox controller for PC, no adapter required and you can still use your xbox controller with your xbox. The guide to how to do it was posted in the faq forums here by "mua'dib".
EDIT: Seems to have been moved, here is the link for those who are interested http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9348&highlight=xbox

ehh, I just like the Dual Shock a whole lot better. FFXI is a PS2 game, which created my initial attraction to it. So I'd like to play it close to it's original form with the extras of PC play. To each his own, however.

Actually, FFXI does use the rumble features on Dual Shock controllers. Critical hits, large monsters, and some magic spell effects make it vibrate.
Indeed, Starving one.

Hmm, I would like to know also why i hear so many people wanting a PS2 controller for this game? I'm coming from a bunch of different mmorpg's, I've never had problems with using keyboard and mouse. In fact, i prefer it usually. What's so benificial to using the PS2 controller?
a little tip, go to Radio Shack and buy one of these for $10. It doesnt have the rumble feature but hey, if you want to pay $30 plus shipping plus the time it takes to ship just so you can feel a slight vibration when you use your ws, then be my guest
Oh, and another thing, ffxi SUCKS...i'll say that again, ffxi SUCKS without a controller. I played my first 3 weeks with the keyboard and mouse. They just didnt make the game practical with the keyboard. It was oviously designed for a controller so my best advice, get a usb ps2 adapter.
::EDIT::
Just checked your link and the first one is only $13. Usually they are $30 thats why i said that but you still have to pay shipping and wait for it to arrive. It's easier just to go to the store and pick one up.

I thought I'd rather play it with the keyboard, too since I've played numerous MMORPGs on the computer, but since I've played the PS2 beta, I've really enjoyed the controller more than the keyboard. 16 simple buttons. Macros aren't hard to use with the controller, either. You should consider using the controller.

Heh. I've went to several stores looking for the adapter, but nowhere had it. Buying it online isn't 30 dollars, though. I just bought one a second ago for about 12 dollars plus a few dollars for overnight shipping and it came out to $20.94. Not bad at all. It'll be cheaper if you used a different shipping plan, too.
I do agree with you that FFXI sucks without a controller, though. The only thing I'll be using the keyboard for is chatting. Otherwise, the controller is a lot better.

FFXI is designed for the PS2. That is what the very first Japanese beta was for. The whole game interface is based around a controller setup, unlike all other MMORPGs which are designed for a keyboard/mouse setup. There you go.

I would do that, but its kind of hard when the two Radio Shacks in my area don't even carry them. I would believe that other people out there are also in this same situation. But if you do have a Radio Shack near you and they carry them, then by all means go there to grab one.

What I want to know is what do you guys set you PS2 controllers to, and how you configure the buttons for certain shortcuts, etc?

Set my PS2 controller to? What the hell are you talking about?
Just plug in the adapter to the USB port and Windows should automatically recognize new hardware has been added and...
Nevermind. Just check the main page. It explains configuring a controller for gameplay on FFXI.

For four months, I have used a keyboard and mouse for FFXI and it worked just fine. I would much rather use a controller, so I will definitely be picking up one of those for beta.

I cant get the kiky one since it doesnt support 98. At least from what I read.
Anyways, does the second link offer rumble support. I wouldnt mind having it, and if not oh well Ill get it anyways. Id prefer the first but I dont think itll run with my OS =\

KiKY X-Series supports Windows 98. It says so on the back of the pamphlet.

No problemo. One thing to keep in mind, stay with brand name stuff. I mention only the KiKY series because it's made by Soyo.

me only problem with using a controller versus keyboard... is that ur still gona need to use ur keyboard to type. yes the motions, and movment n general are much nicer with a controller, it's more comfortable yata yata but when i'm in a serious PT i don't want to have to set down the controller or type with one hand like the days of PSO. but none the less i may give it a try lol so thanks for the info ~

Why do you guys bother going for with an adapter? Why not use a Thrustmaster gamepad, has almost the same fell than a Playstation gamepad but it's for the PC. They even have a forcefeedback version. Been using one for a while, used it for PS games that were ported to the PC like Grandia II.

No need to be touchy, I just had no clue how the game handled the controls, nor did I know that there was information about it ont he site. Sheesh.

That's not being touchy. That's being helpful.
And when they say overnight delivery, they really mean overnight delivery. I ordered mine last night around 10 or 11 pm and it arrived a few minutes ago around 12:20pm. Good service.

That wasn't an attitude. My attitudes are usually two or three paragraphs, one sentence, or simply "..." Or they're full of sarcasm and/or rhetorical questions. Guess you read it in the wrong context. Is my AV that intimidating?

Yikes, no offense but those look like abominations. Almost every PC USB gamepad I have ever tried has an extremely crappy D-pad and those don't look much better. Some of the layouts look pretty frightening too. But like I said before, to each his own. I just posted this up for anyone who wants one.

Before you say they LOOK like crap I suggest you actualy tried one. I do have one and I say this I find they have a really good grip and controls are very responsive. The D-pad has a good feeling to it. I tried Microsoft and Gravis and none of them I like, Logitech there just plain ugly.
Of course I dont know how the new one ( the U shape one feels ) but the one that ressemble PS pads do give the same feeling. It's very robust also. The analog sticks are pretty sturdy ( that was a surprise for me )
Of course I was just suggesting them since there very close the style of the PS pads and since there are for the PC there be easier to program ( hey you even have the Thrustmapper that can map keyboard keys to the pad for you :)

I picked up the PS2 -> USB adaptor from Radioshack before my import arrived and planned on using it, but honestly I haven't had the desire to use it yet over the past week and a half
I had to try two Radioshack stores before I found one, but when I did, it turned out that it was "on sale" and only cost $4.95, not a bad deal, I priced a few E-Bay vendors, and the prices generally ranged from $9-12 with shipping, this is slow shipping of course and from an unreliable source (its E-Bay after all)
I've been using pretty much only my keyboard for every single option and gameplay movement in Playonline and FFXI, the only time I use the mouse is when I want to Target something behind me while I'm /Healing and I don't already have a Target acquired and therefore I can't use the Tab button to select it, as you can see that's kind of a specific scenario but its not bothering me too much if I only need to use the mouse once or twice a day
I figured I'd want to use a Dual Shock PS Controller for playing FFXI, but when the time to actually play came I didn't find a need for it, and I like the fact that I can quickly enter in command line operations and type more efficiently since my hands are already on the keyboard
some people say that FFXI was designed for the PS2 and therefore works best using a PS2 controller (I thought the same before I played) but I personally haven't found that to be the case
Peace...

Genrou I did the exact same thing on fry's electronics online for $20.94. it works great. i just need a free download game online to test it.
Casval >> you just have to try it yourself. I, too, saw no points of using joy pad before.... and played the game with keyboard only for 3 months until i reached 62.
then I got my Ps2>USB converter.
And now I have no will to go back and use keyboard ever again. My life and gaming experience has become more fun and a lot easier....
Im not gonna say how good it is since I, too, saw a lot of people posting about that.
And back a while ago I also have this "no point using controller" thought in my mind so i didn't care about those posts at all....
im wondering what other games besides ffxi does the kiky x series support?
