PT's are stingy about mage melee combos.
This one wouldnt work so well as monk gets no Mp and if you a mage thats what you need.
The only /Rdm really works is if you have a mage class in front of it.
If you dont wanna give up Rdm but still wanna fight every now and then? be Rdm/war.
Dont wanna give up monk? Be a Mnk/War which is a pretty badass combo.

RDM/MONK: another aggressive class but slightly quicker than the war also using knuckles for two handed attacks (=2 att) is good for a support role in fighting parties. Good amount of Hp pool gets dumped into you for added survivability. Penalities are like the WAR upper end gear is not for you.
RDM/THIEF: (I like this one most) WIth gil being in short supply in FFXI I must say having the skill to force money and items from a monster is awesome, gota buy those spells, also when needing to lend a hand in combat sneak attack is great.
the bonuses to evasion and dexterity are welcome.
Not as much strength as a war or monk but good nonetheless.
The other jobs will be added later like monday later..:)
The reason I say start thinking about subjobs now is because of their importance later. One tip I personally recomend with sub jobs is level them early as possible.
WHen you reach 9 in one RDM , go level the blm to 9 then the whm to 9 then whatevr else. WHy do this so early. You dont wanna hit 20 in selbina/VALk then have to go back and level those jobs again. You dont wanna do that. ALso it raises your magic strength by making you cast those spells over and over again , kinda like raising weapon skills.
I had triel a total of 27 levels by the time I statred to go to highlands for PT. 9RDM/9BLM/9WHm. so when you hit 18 those jobs are immediately avaible and ready to use with a quick run to mog.
have fun just remeber 1-20 a monk sj is great because you can be a back up fighter...and you have monk hp boost and some monk skills.
Also when you solo take monk for the hp boost ,thief for thievery and war for you r warrior ability gains..
RDm 1-20 is great as war back up
21-about 40 mage primarily
41+ start getting back those warrior skills
and also good magery skills also ......
so you have room to experiment
just remeber that in a PT at certain levels know your role,
BUT also remeber that this is your game and play around i have Pt with summoner/blm and even rdm/ninja.
dude have fun ..
If americans turn you down go PT with the japanese....
consider this a rdm/monk is just a character without a sj if people are mean about it...:)

I'm going to be a RDM/MNK.
Why?
More HP, more VIT, more survivabity. I think parties will need me staying alive more over casting 1-3 mroe spells before I have to rest... Losing someone in your PT (pre-24) sucks. That person, if far away from their home point, is kicked. And then the party has to find someone else. I'd prefer to stay alive and not put my PT or ex-PT through that. Plus I love to melee. I melee as a mage in every game. So RDM plus MNK as a sub adds more to the mix ^_^
MNK/RDM - at higher levels, this may be beneficial. Casting an occasional poison/other spells could help out while fighting tough monsters. But you wont have enough MP to go very 'all out' or 'last resort mp kill.' But the extra melee damage + ability to break out a spell could help out. You never know when the WHM could run out of TP and no other healer and the WAR has 1 hp left.
Go with what you want. Be unique. Be what you want. I may eventually go RDM/NIN. Because it sounds like a cool and fun combo. I don't care what people think about my job combo. The game is meant to be fun so have fun with your combos! Don't worry about what will get you into PTs, cuz that wont be as fun of a combo for you. Be what you want, play it well, make some friends, and PTs should be no problem. ^_^
Have fun!!!
