View Full Version : Couple Of Questions, Any Experianced Player Can Probably Answer

Hey guys got a couple of questions I haven't been able to find answers to anywhere.

1.) Is there a penalty to dual wielding? Like decrease in accuracy or decrease in attack speed? Can any class dual wield or only if you have level 10 ninja?

2.) Is there any weapons or items that glow or have particle effects on them in the game?

3.) How are weapon skills done, I mean if I have warrior 30 max his 2hand sword and switch to dark knight will his 2handsword be maxed until it reaches what the warriors max was, or will the warriors 2hand sword and the darks 2hand sword skill combine together for a higher skill in 2hand sword?

4.) It is my understanding that to level your subclass/support class you have to make it your main class, is this true? If it is true say I get to 30 which is what I believe the level is required to get a subclass, I pick a subclass and make it my main class to level up in it. As of that point am I a Level 1 subclass / level 30 whatever i switched from or am I a level 1 subclass / nothing? When I start my subclass do I go killing newbie monsters again or ?

5.) What level can you get an advanced class and what is the difference between advanced classes and sub classes?

6.) What class(no summoner or blackmage) combo does the most damage during a long fight? If this combo is not the most accuracte (which wouldn't make sense or how else would they do the most damage?) what class combo is the most accurate? (Has the most hit percentage over a long fight?)

7.) Does a theif actually get to steal items and gil from monsters, or does it just increase the items / gil the monster drops? If the theif actually gets to steal items / gil from the monster and it goes directly to him, does it take away from what the monster would have dropped for gil / items?

8.) If the latter is true can a theif just walk up to a mob un noticed and steal something from it and walk away?

9.) If I got something like war/theif what type of armor can I wear? I mean can I wear heavy armor since I am warrior, or can I only wear light armor since I am a theif? Or can I only wear armor that says both war and theif on it? Same questions for if I was theif main class and war subclass?

10.) What are the advantages of using a sheild (other then increased defense), and what classes can use a sheild?

11.) Does a theif with backstab type skill do the most damage on a single attack then any other melle type class?

12.) How does dual wielding effect backstab type skills? Meaning if I perform a backstab does it only work with my main hand? Or will I get a backstab with both my main hand and offhand? Or will I get a backstab with my main hand and not even a regular attack with my offhand?

13.) What job combo can get the most attacks in a round? How many?

1) I don't see any penalty duel wielding... I think look at it this way, duel wielding is a *bonus* you get using /nin as sub. if you sub something, you are getting different bonus. so it's all up to you which bonus you prefer. which bonus you think works the way you need or want.

Something i've heard is that when you hold 2 weapons your interval time actually is the 2 weapon's delay time add together. so you're not making more damage or swinging faster.
this can be true in some case.... but incase your weapon both give bonus you will also get double bonus too, which can be really neat.

and /nin seems to work best for THF.... some WS that do multiple hits will get extra hit if you duel wield. for example fast blade is a 2 hit WS.... if you duel wield it would become 3 hit. that's about 50% more attack power. with THF's sneak and decieve attack, it means TONs of damage boost.

2) not that i know... some got cool color tho

3) there's the *real* value of skill stores in game... for example if you pratice sword to 60 with your warrior then you change job to PLD level 1.
PLD level 1 cap sword skill at 4 (making up numbers) so your skill will be adjusted to 4.
once you level up, cap raise to 7, your skill will be 7 right away (because your *real* skill is 60)
level up, skill cap become 9, your skill will be 9 right away.
then you level up up up up.... until your cap is 66. now your skill will still be 60 :P and you'll need to train further to reach 66.

4) no. you job levle is your level.
if you use 33 WAR as main job, you level is 33.
you switch job to level 1 mage, you are level 1.
switch back to warrior again and you'll be 33.
sub jobs just stay there to give bonus but not affecting your main level or anything

5) don't call class... call job :P
don't get confused by the terms.... let's see
in this game, what ever job you have will be in your job "list". you can change your job in your mog house anytime you want. and the job you can change to are jobs you have in your "list"

- Main Job is what you are. you switch your main to warrior, you are warrior. You switch your main to monk, you'll become a monk.

- Sub Job is a job that only sits there to give you bonus. for example your main is WAR, you can put any jobs you like to be your sub. WAR/MNK, WAR/WHM, WAR/BLM, ect. and you still be a warrior with difference status boost and abilities.

- Main job and Sub job you can put anything you want. the only limitation is you need to have those jobs available in your list.

- Advanced jobs are jobs you don't have at the beginning. you need a main job at level 30 or above to recieve quest for each advanced job. and once you complete the quest, the job will be added to your "list"
once they are in your list, you can use it as main or as sub as you want.

6) there's serveral damage dealing jobs... I personally like THF more than others in this field...

7) yes you can steal items and gils from enemies. not only increase drop rate but you can do it as an action too.

8) no. when you steal something it almost like you attack the monster. it will get angry and attack you. but you can of course runaway...

9) main job is what determines what you are and what you can use. sub job doesn't attect anything equipment.

10) (TT stop calling class before I edit your post)
shields actually works the best for paladine because they can perform a shield bash. which stuns the enemy. really useful when fighting a mage type monsters.
almost every jobs can use shields. only the fighter types can use large shield however.

11) sneak attack alone do really a lot. a lot more than other jobs yes. but what make THF useful is not only that... iut's the fact that they won't get attack after doing that amount of damage too because the hate will go to other members of the party instead. (that's what decieve attack ability does)

12) sneak + decieve attack ability only affect 1 hit. so it will apply to your weapon in the right hand. you swing the other one normally

13) probably THF... at level 55. they got tripple attack. can swing 3 times in a role. not happen so often but it's pretty fun to have.

you seem interesting in THF... try check around the THF forum in the specific job section.

Thanks for the reply. Btw have read the theif boards along with most of the other classes that I am interested in. Sorry used to saying class since it is used in most other games.

I am still confused about subjob/support job leveling. Say I am a level 30 warrior and I go take the quest or whatever to become a dark knight. Now when I get dark knight and make it my subjob/support job is it automatically half my level, making it 15? If so do I get all the abilities of a level 15 dark knight and all of the stats they gain per level?

OR do I have to first level the dark knight to 15 as my main job, then go back and switch my main job to warrior and subjob as dark knight?

On weapon skills, I saw some posts that list like that warrior is A with some weapons and B with other weapons etc... Does this mean that in terms of numbers does an A skill better then a B skill in the terms that A has a higher max number then B? Like say max for my current level of A weapon is 100 does this mean that max for a B weapon will be less then 100? If not what is the disadvantages of using a lower rank skill for you job.

I have some more thief questions, I'll post them in the theif forum.

Couple more questions.

-Are there scabbards in the game for people to sheath there weapons in, specially for sam?

-Are there weapon procs in the game like eq, for those that don't know what a weapon proc is, it's basically an added effect or spell in the weapon that randomly goes off in battle. (Not a spell cast on the weapon)

Hey Jei what job do you have as your sub job the most?

Jei
06-29-2003, 06:40 PM
yes each job has their own rank for each weapon.
warrior got A for axe. sword, clubs, spear, are rank B. for example.
lower rank means lower cap, yes. if you A skill cap at 100, B skill would cap at about 96-97, at the same level

about jobs, you need to level them manually. once you recieven dark knight for example it's going to be level 1. if you just put it in your sub job slot right away, you'll be 30main/1drk.

scabbards - not sure what this is..? like a cover for weapon?

procs - yes some weapon have effects attached to it. it's not like EQ that procs can be like a magic casted after hit tho.
procs in this game, if it's a elemental effect, it only adds a little damage after you hit with that element.
some can also have different effects such as bind the enemy, blind it, poison, drain HP MP or make you run faster something like that
I don't know how to make these effects work tho. they don't come out so often.

hmmm my main job is RDM. I normally use /blm for everyday PT, /whm for PT without healer or boss battle, /THF for solo money hunt.
and im working on THF. I use /ninja mainly. unless some leader want me to use /war.

Does theif sneak attack damage increase with theif levels, or does it always do like double damage or whatever, no matter if you are level 15 or level 20 etc...?

Tauguy
06-29-2003, 10:39 PM
Oh i can answer you scabbard question.

No there arent scabbards the weapons just hang there.. it pretty cool really, when a drk is done with his scythe he just slips in on his back and it stays. Crazy :spin: :spin: :spin: :spin:

I'm not positive, but I think Backstab always does double damage, and the Deceive Attack is a ton more, I don't know how much or such but I hear its pretty powerful.

I know that your subjob's level is cut in half, this causes you to only have the spells of half your true level? I was planning on using redmage with WHM/BLM depending on circumstances, so I will have the spells from half of that rank correct? Can I use those spells even though it is a subjob?

Gilabane
06-29-2003, 10:51 PM
Yeah, you can as long as you bought the scrolls for the spells, also as long as your main job or subjob is the level to use the spell:spin:

Jei

hmmm sneak and decieve attack pretty much increase the same amount of damage no matter how high you are...

... but don't forget as you level up more, your normal attack become stronger too. so sneak and decieve attack will also grow in power.

numbers might give you a better view... my THF is 52 right now.
- normal attack. 25-30
- successfully sneak hit 180-200 damage
- successfully sneak+decieve hit = 250-300 damage

- viper bite alone = 30-50 damage
- sneak+decieve+viper bite = 350-400 damage
- sneak+decieve+duel wield+viper bite = 350-600 damage.

falon

How and why do you do sneak and decieve together? Wouldn't it make sense to do a sneak and then a decieve, to get 2 high damage attacks instead of one?

The reason I was asking about theif damage on sneak/decieve is because if I made theif a sub job and had something more damaging maybe like a monk or whatever as a main job I might do more damage with sneak/decieve that way?

Gilabane
06-30-2003, 04:17 PM
from what i hear if you sub thief your backstab or decieve attacks arnt as strong as they would be should you choose to be a thief for main job:spin:

Jei
06-30-2003, 04:39 PM
hmm you will need to know the characteristic of those abilities....

sneak attack is a lot more powerful than decieve attack if you use them seperately.

sneak attack will guarantee your next swing a 100% critical hit if you stand at the back of enemy (it will be just like normal attack if the enemy happens to face to your direction) damage is as i posted above

decieve attack doesn't ensure you 100% hit. a very little damage boost. but what it does is, it transfer hate to the other person you use as dummy
(decieve attack must be performed when there's 1 friend standing between you and enemy)

so, when use together there's several HUGE advantage over using seperately
1. your sneak attack ensure you 100% hit rate in the right condition. so when stack with decieve attack, your hit will become both 100% hit and damage boostfrm both ability.
2. your WS is your supreme move you want to ensure maximum damage from. so using every possible abilities to boost atack power is always nice.
3. the huge attacking power boost from sneak attack normally will make the enemy tun to the THF and attack him. and THF defense sucks big time. Decieve attack will transfer the hate to other person as i told you, so you need not worry to be afraid of dieing after you do your insane damaging WS.

-How does deceive attack work do you have to actually stand near/behind a party member?

-Can you open your first attack with deceive attack if you are soloing?

-Anyone know or got a site or topic with general stuff, like I am wondering how loot is dropped, how chests / coffers work, who gets the loot (killing blow, or more damage?) etc...

-Are only quest items the ones that go to everyone that has the quest active?

-Does it suck that steal skills have 5 min timer or is steal that good? (In eq you could steal every like 15 or 30 seconds if i remember right, however you couldn't steal great weapons, you could rack up a lotta money)

-How many items can you have on your character at once? Is there bags? Is there encumberance? Is there a bank, if so how much can you store in the bank? How much can you store in your mog house?

-Do you have to make corpse runs when you die, do you loose money or items when you die or just exp?

-The game is all menu driven right, but can you organize how things look in the menus? Is there a hotkey bar?

Sorry for all the q's I havent actively read up on FFXI in well over a year, hoping to get into beta in next few weeks so trying to catch up on all the info.

Right now I am trying to decide if I wanna go
theif / ninja OR
Sam / warrior

And if I do end up going theif / ninja, do you think I should go red mage to 15 then theif to 30 so I would be going theif / rdm until I could get ninja then go ninja rdm until ninja hit 15 and then go to theif ninja? Or would it be best to just go theif to 30 and get ninja? BTW seems does thief even get nuff agro / hate to make his 2 hour ability worth while?

Jei

a topic about decieve attack. quite clearly explained >> http://ffxionline.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11701

when you solo you have no dummy. so your decieve would be no effect. your sneak still works fine

loot drop... let me see...
try this >> http://ffxionline.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6210

(actually i just searched the forum for my own post....)

stealing works quite ok the way it is now. I think 1 enemy only carry 1 item you can steal too. and you can fail to steal, too.

items have no weight. you basicly can carry a fixed amount of items. at the beginning you can carry 30 items. and there's quests to increase your space

dieing >> http://ffxionline.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9780&highlight=die
(:p there's lot of cool post about death really. I just happen to like my own posts)

you can arrange items. manually and automatic. but hmm... that's pretty much all you can do. you can't customize how it looks.

if i am to start a new character myself to be main tHF, I would do like this....
start a WHM. WHM is so easy to learn the game. people will pick you into party and you'll learn a lot about hunting place and how to play a fighters
once got support jobs, i'll bring up WAR and MNK to 10 or 15 using /whm to help soloing a lot easier.
then i'll go for THF.... using THF/WAR and THF/MNK mainly until my THF is 30.
get ninja job, bring Ninja to around 20
and play THF all the way with /nin and /war.

well... that's my personal choice :)

falon

Ok guess I had a misunderstanding on decieve attack, I thought it was just a higher level sneak attack that gave no hate, but guess it just transfers all your current hate to another member.

So sneak attack is just a critical??? I thought sneak attack was a highdamageing attack that also had a chance to critical?

Jei
06-30-2003, 06:01 PM
a successfull sneak attack will always be critical hit. main THF can do HUGE amount of damage with this snea critical hit. while other jobs with sub THF will only do ordinary critical hit.

falon

The downside of going your way with the wht mage etc, is that won't you be way behind other theifs that just go theif to ninja?
Which is one reason why I am trying to figure out if I wanna go that route either with red mage or white mage.

Anyone able to answere these?

-So how do coffers/chest work exactly. I mean from what I have read sounds like there are just chest/coffers laying around certain areas? Do these chests refresh with items after certain time? Are they always in the same place? How do you get the keys that are needed for them? What's the difference between a chest and a coffer?

-Are only quest items the ones that go to everyone that has the quest active?

- Is there a bank, if so how much can you store in the bank? How much can you store in your mog house?

-The game is all menu driven right, but can you organize how things look in the menus? Is there a hotkey bar?

-You said you can combine attacks like sneak and decieve how do you do that?

-Are synthesized items supposed to be better then found items? (ala the way games are tryign to go swg, eq2 etc...)

-Are daggers, shortswords and 1handed swords all one skill together?

-Can you do your AF quests more then once (specially if I am dual wielding weapons?)

Jei
06-30-2003, 09:14 PM
the path is there for you to decide ^^ you don't need to walk the way i walk :spin:

coffers.. can't find my own post so here's how it works
chests and coffers are 2 different kind of treasure that can pop in dungeons. they need different kind of keys with coffer beoing the tougher one to open.
once they pop they pretty much just stay there. until someone open it, it will pop again after 30 minutes (time can vary depends on place) in a random possible position

keys normally dropped from enemies within that dungeons. Only THF, how ever can buy theif tool or player-made keys to lock pick them.

Quest items can be obtained in serveral ways... some are nromal drop from enemies. so if you're in a PT every one will have equal chance to lot in for it.
some quest items require you to examine the environment to obtain them. some requires you to take part in a fight before you can get it.

you have mog house. you can store items in there. and... money in this game is just numbers so you can carry them as many as you want. you'll never get over weight or drop them on the ground.

sneak and decieve attacks.... check this >> http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13730&highlight=activate

Search does come up with a lot of post but thats the problem 10-30 pages of stuff to sort through and find just the one thing looking for would take way to much time. You pretty much already answered all of the questions anyways :)

-Does any stat increase weapon speed?

-Does any stat increase the spead at which you walk / run?

-Are you always running, or walking?

-Can you jump?

How often would you miss on something with a 60 dex compare to an 80 dex?

falon

Another question, my brother and I wanna play together when the game goes live, if we both don't get on the same server, about how long would it take for us to get enough money to buy a worldpass(assuming this is a brand new server, all people starting at level 1). Also say I create a character, if I delete that character and make another one, will the character start on the server the old character was or will it be random again?

Jei
07-04-2003, 11:45 PM
i don't think any stats increase weapon speed... it got nothing to do with your moving speed either

you can run, you can walk, as much as you like

you can't jump. there's dragoon's ability to jump but it simply is an attacking method not a move you can do to get on top of a rock or anything

Dex wise, I can't say... hitting an enemy depends on a lot of stuff. your skill of your weapon, you DEX, the enemies level, enemies's AGI, enemies' evasion skill.....
20 DEX will help a LOT of accuracy.... but i don't know really how to compare.

world pass are used only at character creation. once character is created it will stay on that server.
making money for world pass is not too hard.... if you know how to make money. better way is to ask a friend to buy for you tho

Im not sure about the create-and-delete strategy. you cna try that...

Anyone know what the level cap difference is in groups, meaning say I am level 20, whats the lowest level that can join me and still get exp? Whats the lowest level that can join me and get decent exp? Also when calculating levels for parties and mob difficulty do you add your subjob level to your main job ?

What's the deal with synthesizing, I am seeing all these posts saying to sell your crystals. I thought you wanted to keep them for synthesizing?

-Aren't some of the best or better items in the game synthesize only?

-Can you make a lotta money selling your synthed items (to pcs or shops)? If so at what levels can you start to make a lotta money. (Like from basic synth weapons can you make any money or only really good ones sell?)

Anyone know any good sites or anything that shows what the best crystals are in rank, what each crystal should cost to buy, formulas for all synthed items, a guide for what you should synth at what skill level etc...?

falon
07-12-2003, 11:25 PM
Also is there a cap on your attributes? Like a hard number, perhaps 100 or something? Or is there no cap at all. Just wondering cause if there is a cap then it really wouldn't matter which race you pick if your picking for best attributes for your class, since items would be able to help you cap or max out.

Another Q,
If you have 2 characters on one account, both of them get there own inventory and mog house right? You don't have both characters sharing one mog house and inventory I hope.

Jei
07-14-2003, 10:01 PM
Anyone know what the level cap difference is in groups
- normally you can group with anyone at any level. but having more than 3 level difference will not be good for the lower level ones. in this game the highest level in the PT determines how much EXP the PT is going to get. so if there is 1 level 25 in a PT of all 20, you basicly can only handle a monster for level 20. which gives terrible exp to 25. and so the whole PT will get horrible exp.
I think you can still get exp even if you're 10 level difference. but the low level person might only get 1-3 exp while the others getting 100

What's the deal with synthesizing, I am seeing all these posts saying to sell your crystals. I thought you wanted to keep them for synthesizing?
- not everyone want to spend money buying other resources to up synth skills. in fact i think more than 50% of people don't train any synth skills at all.

Aren't some of the best or better items in the game synthesize only?
- kind of.. there's a few super good items that can only be made. BUT in contrast you also need rare items dropped by rare monsters in order to make them....

Can you make a lotta money selling your synthed items (to pcs or shops)? If so at what levels can you start to make a lotta money. (Like from basic synth weapons can you make any money or only really good ones sell?)
- some skills can be profitable once you got very high skill. some are not at all.

Anyone know any good sites or anything that shows what the best crystals are in rank, what each crystal should cost to buy, formulas for all synthed items, a guide for what you should synth at what skill level etc...?
- price varies upon market. no one can predict that.
normally, lightness crystals are the most expensive because it's not dropped from enemies you'll see or kill everyday.
Fire crystals as second expensive because it's used a lot for cooking. and many many people cook.
earth are normally cheapest. used rarely for weaver and tanner

is there a cap on your attributes?
- your race, level and job is what your attributes are gonna be. you level up, they go higher. don't think there's any cap in particular.

If you have 2 characters
- every characters will have their own inventory and mog house. seperately :)

Few more Q's I thought up

-Is the game like EQ with zones or like SWG/DAOC?

-About lockpicks (so you don't need keys?), how does a thief get them/make them?

-How hard are the quests/mission to find? I mean do I gotta go to every npc and talk to them to find them or will it be easy to tell who gives quests/missions?

-How hard are the recipes for guild/synthesizing to find? Do I gotta look on the net for them or is it easy to find recipes for everything in game?

-Is it dynamic monsters like SWG or spawns like EQ? If it's spawns about how long for regular spawns to respawn after you kill them? How long for named or boss types?

-Are there any good / usefull items from fishing or from chocobo item finding?

-How are cooked items and how good do they benefit you?

-Is there ingame maps of your area?

-Is there ingame journals that you can write to?

-Is there ingame journal that keeps track of your missions / quests etc..?
