Best Way to play a SMN/RDM?

Just looking for some opinions here...My plan is to to start with a Tarutaru RDM and eventually have SMN as my main job and push RDM back to a support job. Any suggestions on how to level, guilds to concentrate on, get summons, etc?? Thanks.

I am leveling redmage and summoner also
My summoner is level 10 rightnow
and i use it sometimes in level up PT as sub to blm for mp boost.
Also I plan to use summoner as main oneday after i get redmage to a point im happy with.
One thing you may want to know is never let anyone tell you summoner as a sub sucks.
Its not about the power of the summons then , its about the buffs it gives and mp gain , ANY mage type can always use more MP.
Theres a lot of discussion on the viablity of summoner as a sub ,
let me say it works just depends on the situation .
example if you are a blm and want to nuke for days get the summoner sj or the added mp.
if you are redmage in a level up PT summoner sj is great since you are there to weaken the foe not outright kill it.
Also as redmage with a lower mp pool that sj is great for us.
You caneven bring out the summons from time to time to do its attacks or buffs.
dotn get discouraged by people saying summner sj sucks.
I ave a great time with it , and its not sj with Pt full of friends , its in a pick up PT or money hunting and all inbetween.

I think you should let him play how he wants to play, I plan on doing the same. Don't listen to that TaruTaru, in the long run...especially after the raise the level cap, it will be a good combination.

seriously u should play however u wanna play....... the games abotu fun not the strongest character........ atleast from my point of view cuz i aint payin 10$ a month just to have the strongest character im payin 10$ a month so i can enjopy the game........... I was thinking of choosing a blackmage first then becoming a summoner....... straying form the "the only good summoner has a whitemage as a sub" bs..........

Yeah you are right about choosing a job you will have more fun with as a sub. I think Black mage and Red mage would be more fun that White Mage anyway. I'll be a white mage sub for my summoner but it probably be dull. So I'll try out the other two as well.:confused:

I don't have the game yet but I have done a lot of reading on these boards and I have a question. Once the level cap is raised won't it be possible to have SUM for a main job and RDM for a subjob and use refresh, then bring out your summon and keep it out for a longer period of time to cast spells or attack and gather hate. Then you could call it back, use convert, refresh again if you wanted and bring it back out again for a long time? It seems like RDM would make a great sj for SUM eventually because of all of the MP replenishing abilities a RDM provides that a SUM needs. Again, I realize that this isn't possible right now due to the level cap but when it gets to 80 or 85 couldn't this be a potent combination? If this wouldn't work then I'm sorry. Like I said, I don't have the game and I don't want to come off sounding like I do. :p

yeah once cap is raised to 80 convert and the other refresh will eb great addition to the arsenal of a summoner.
I have experimented with a sorta lowbie summoner /rdm combo, and to simulate refresh i drink juice and use the summons. works like a charm . thing is with stronger sumons means more mp usage and now when i use summoner/rdm combo I drink pine juice since ai gather more 2pts more mp per second than carby uses. since i have a juice maker I am pretty much never low on pine juice.
Hiroki senpai , is a smn/rdm combo, as of yesterday he is 63/31 smn/rdm.
Hes teahcing me things about the combo so im learning alot. He is senpai to me as rdm and blm also.

once the lvl cap is above 82, you can get refresh which will be very good for the summoner job, im thnkin of using drk/sum for attack and using summons just for helping the PT and calling them back, or dragoon/sum, cause i dont wana use summons full time, if ur gona have summoner as ur main, use mage subjobs for extra mp. Im startin as a white mage, not cause of the subjob, but because I like head-on fighting more then backup, so I thought this would be a good change for me.
