To me, summoner feels like a really powerful job, so do you have to do a quest to become one?

Yes there is a quest which needs to be done in order to get the Summoner job.

But to achive greater summons you also have to defeat them first.

ok the smn quest is very long but good

step 1

kill leeches to get the ruby of Carbuncel or what ever it is in english its red

step 2 go to the house of heros in windurst close to the star tree

step 3 exearence all elms but lite and drk ^_^

and last not go back to house of the hero but go to lathine near the lake there is a stone cercel kinda like stone hedge there is a ??? in center trade ruby and there is a very cool cut with carbuncel talking to you and you have compleated smn and now have carbuncel ^_^ and it takes a full pt of 60 to beat smns its hard
