It actually makes me feel like part of the family, first time you have been crabby to me since I joined, was starting to feel left out.

Dux needs to amend his original post to put that disclaimer out there. I think many people thought the Alpha testing was open to all for application. Oh, and Dux, I deliberately didn't bother mentioning it to increase my chances of getting in.

No, I like Alpha, because precisely it's more work. I rather the client crash and flame out on me and let the devs know what's up rather than be in beta and see that no one is reporting bugs that were obvious and ends up being there in live. Also, in general, Alpha testers are more pleasant to work with, as open beta tend to be full of immature brats with nothing better to do than go yelling about how such-and-such game is so much better or trolling about getting laid by some ficticious GF.

Mhmm, that's why I'm signing up too - I wanna help make the game better, not just prance around getting a preview of what's to come.

was just making sure ppls know what the real point of the Alpha is - it's not some pre-beta fun fest.

I love helping in FFXI Alpha. In fact, maybe it's not just solely my work, but knowing that I put in reports about certain features and how they were implemented and then SE making the changes during the test made me feel that they do read your report and it does make them at least think about things. I'm sure other testers put in the same effort and having like minded people who genuinely care about the success of a game goes a long way towards making it better. Unfortunately, the batch of Alpha testers they had (if they had any) were probably players who only were interested in leading high content guilds in release and probably did everything they could to preserve bad features and bugs.

These included those who only care about data dumping and breaking NDAs with early release information. I hate them.

The other reason I'd like to get involved in the Alpha, as basic as it may be in terms of the work, is to get a feel for helping to test & debug a game - you know, what with my wanting to publish my own RPG some day.
