In order for this attack to work, the thief must stand directly behind a party member, and that party member has to be facing the back of the monster.

So the formation is the monster's back, the party member facing the monster's back, and then the thief facing the party member's back. When you attack using it, it creates a huge amount of hate towards the person the thief was using to backstab with, but the thief doesn't get any hate at all.

hmmm.... easier to see the picture. Basicly, you need to face the back of an enemy with 1 friend between you and you're target.

(I use mouse to draw this pucture so bear with me )
THF attacking the back of enemy from behind Friend_A. The enemy is facing Friend_B.
After attack, if the atack is powerful enough, the enemy will think it was Friend_A who did the hit. so it will turn to friend_A.

Well, no, the point isn't to make anyone upset.

In an organized party, you normally choose who the thief is going to use backstab with so there won't be any unexpected surprises during the middle of battle.

Here's a quicky picture that shows the layout. Basically, there's the the PLD (Barl) who keeps the monster on him during most of the battle. Then there is the person who is going to be used for backstab standing directly behind the monster (Lecyliax). Then the THF (Hamasaki) stands right behind the person being used for backstab, and after it's used all the hate goes to Lecyliax and in the process does a huge amount of damage. Most of the time these skills are used with weapon skills to boost renkei damage.

Oh man Jei, that picture is so cute!!! XD!
