Question about merits

I've never been bothered about merits before, I seem to get bored with a job soon as it hits 75 but I'm looking into blue merits and they seem like there worth the effort.

My question is about weapons, can you merit all the weapons a certain job can use or is there a cap to how many points can be added to your all weapon skills? eg is it say 20 points possible over all your weapons or does each weapon have a separate category? So could I cap merits on sword say and go back to sam sometime and cap merits on Gk and Polearm without having to reduce my merits on sword?

I wanted to cap strenth for my melee initiallty but after adding up that you need 360k xp to cap it I decided I didnt want it that much lol

Cheers for the help

Re: Question about merits

The cap is 20 upgrades for all combat skills. So no, you can't cap 3 weapons.

Base stats aren't worth meriting unless you've run out of things to invest in.

Re: Question about merits

Its the same again then. I figured as much thats why I never merited GK cause I've not decided on my full time main yet. Dont want to merit GK for samurai and put all the time it takes into that and only use it for missions, seems a waste, want to merit something that willl help me while I level another job say sword merits i can get on sam or drg and would be beneficial to a lot more jobs than GK merits would be.

should be able to merit all the weapons separately

If you think that's rough, the limit for magic skill merits are even lower, no more than 16. Has to suck for people who have an assortment of mage jobs levelled...I only have 2 (RDM and SCH) that use a lot of overlapping skills, and I'm still annoyed by the limitations.

I say just stick to jobs that you really, really like when it comes to being 75, and concentrate all your merits on those, rather thinking about what would help the most jobs that you may or may not use.

Re: Question about merits

I like blue mage but for things like events Id rather go sam for the sheer damage I can put out with relative safety with /nin. Just capped my magic for a 63 blue last night in besieged. I really need to get cracking getting sea access. Think I'm going to try organice a cop 4-2 fight tonight.

I just dont like putting my eggs in one basket, like I havent merited hp/mp because until I get a job that I'm going to use full time theres no point, same with weapon skills, I want to level a straight mage one day too. mite do RDM next.

or play SAM (yay for +5 STR)

I've tried asking this before and I'd like a serious answer: Is it worth it for me to cap out Hand to Hand Merits? I play a lot of different jobs, though I usually use MNK and SAM the most (for now, that could always change)

Let's just throw out a hypothetical to help a conclusion. Let's say I have all 20 jobs @ 75, they're decently geared and I use them all equally. Would it be worth it to max out hand to hand for the damage increase (since skill increases DMG rating by 1 per 8 skill levels) since every other weapon will only gain attack and accuracy and not an increase to base DMG?

I'm holding back on my combat merits a bit just incase SE ever does actually release Mystic Knight (doubtful but if they did I'd want to max sword merits ASAP) and well, 2 handed jobs (SAM in particular) manage just fine because of the 2H update. This is where I'm torn, since while it'd be nice to optimize say, GKT or Archery/Marksmanship (for when I get around to RNG and COR for max damage potential) it looks like Hand to Hand benefits the most from increased skill.

I should probably point out that I do enjoy MNK and PUP quite a bit and am fervently searching for help with obtaining a black belt (and having absolutely no luck as with most things I do in game - _ -)
