But when my room mate's characters were compromised, and when he finally got them back, they did allow him to change his names, but that's more than likely cause of the hacking, but it's not impossible.

(Now please respond and expond to me how it spread like wildfire and it was just awful and everyone and their brothers and people from other servers knew!) In the situation he's in and my friend was in, it was at least 1/2 of a damn server that knew gil sellers names and would make their game lives hell. There is a lot of difference between a single person and a couple THOUSAND.

No you won't be able to make another toon with that name in that world because there is one with that name in that world because that one still exists. It only does not exist if you move it to another server (which costs $50, there and back, and takes 3 months I believe) or you delete it.

EXACTLY. What's pissing me off, is just because of my name, it's like I'm guilty until proven innocent. Like I said, whenever this happens, after actually talking to these people I'm vindicated and usually get some form of apology (although not always, assholes). And this always seems to happen when I'm partying, so I get to enjoy the bullshit hassle of stopping what I'm doing to get in a /t or /sh fight with some prick. I'm sure TGM's friend that was in the same situation, and by extension TGM, knows exactly how I feel, and how frustrating it is. Seriously, experience it yourself and you'll change your tune, and see how ignoring it doesn't do a damn bit of good. So TGM, and the others that are being supportive, thank you for understanding of the seriousness of the situation...

Luckily, I've got an LS behind me now, to assist me in these stupid /sh wars when they occur and help prove my innocence, but I really wonder how many party invites I missed out on over the years because people just assume I'm a gilselling asshole. How many times I had to H.P. because people don't wanna Raise a gilseller? I'm almost afraid to go farm because of this shit, because lord knows eventually someone will call a GM and report me, then I get to deal with that shit as well. And now that I'm getting high enough in level to start participating in end game activities, how much bullshit am I going to have to deal with then? And camping popular NM's? I shudder to think of the bullshit that's gonna entail...

As an open letter to all FFXI players on all servers: before you're going to accuse someone of being a gilfarmer/seller, please TALK to these people before you go and act like an asswipe towards them and try to embarass them in front of the whole fucking zone. If they're a gilseller, then fuck 'em and good riddance, but it IS within the realm of possiblity that they're not. Please remember that...

I'm going to contact a GM later today when I log on and see what they can do for me. I'm betting not a damn thing, but it's definitely worth a shot.

How long does a character delete and recovery operation take? Do you have to engage support to do it? Also, do you lose any items your character has on them?

There was a guy who plays on my server that was told to change his characters name by a GM after his name was complained about as being offensive by another player. His name was something like Muffin and the new name was almost the same thing.

Using a friend of yours you could trick them into asking you to change your name this way. You'll just have to make up something atleast semi agreeable about why your name would be offensive or something.

The people that judge you about petty things like your name or what toon you picked are just that, petty. Even if you chose a FFiv name for you character. So What! There are bigger things to be disgraced over, even in FF games.

When you get smashed for screwing up on the battlefield, thats different.

I was wondering when someone was going to agree with what I said. Fairly simple and easy solution. Just call your friends and tell them to complain. Or if you "have" to ask people in game, dont have complain right after you tell them to do it, wait a few hours, or days...

Because the chances of this working are about .0001% unless the name is truly offensive. They've caught on to this little tidbit so changing your name just isn't that easy anymore.

good lord.... drama much -.- look if it bothering you that much, just do this

change servers, and create a mule with the same name as your character you moved, then 3 months later change back to the same server, and you will be asked to change your name.

Its a long and pricey process, but if you really want your name changed, and the "my name is offencing" does not work, its the only way.

Some people don't have that kind of extra coin lying around. I know I can't afford an extra $25 to move my character one place, then another $25 to move it back.

Not only that, did you consider he might be in a linkshell where his attendance is required for events? Or that he doesn't want to go over to another server and play without his friends for three months?

Seems like such a simple solution to you. Not everyone wants to transfer their character, though, and he shouldn't have to spend fifty bucks to get his name changed. He can at least try to call a GM, it won't hurt.

Welcome to endgame. While some shells are more forgiving as long as your excuse is reasonable (death in the family, work hours have been changed, exams at school, etc.), most would not be very forgiving for "I want to change my name so I'll be gone for 3 months" type of excuse. Those shinies you see people walking around with in WG aren't just handed out to any random person in a shell, they are earned and people who don't attend events, don't earn shinies. Isn't it funny how the game mimics real life?
