No Npc Buddy while in Level Sync Party?

Pickins were sparse last night so I was gonna try the only thing I could think of... we needed a 6th. I tried to call my NPC buddy... wouldnt work.

Is this not allowed?

Do you can't call them. It's a shame really because the mobs that will level up my NPC will also level up my Staff skill so I can't combine an Exp party, skill up party and NPC levelling party all into one.
