FFXI running in Wine. (Progress! Screenshots!)

Wine AppDB - Final Fantasy XI Online Final Fantasy XI

Obviously it's not perfect, or even working for most people yet, but still.

I doubt I'll be coming back, even if FFXI gets to Platinum/Gold (where WoW and EVE are), but I imagine plenty of you would enjoy this.

If you're interested in knowing more about this, see FFXI in Wine. .

I'd say it's missing about a quarter

Seriously though, if they can get this running at an acceptable frame rate (with fully drawn screens, thanks much!), I'm all over this.

Actually, I had that exact same problem with the Benchmark program, and last time I tried it it worked perfectly. It might just be outdated.

Re: FFXI running in Wine. (Progress! Screenshots!)

FFXI just got to the point where it (the battle sytem, mainly) became boring, to me. I'd love to see Vana'diel again, though. Kinda pisses me off that SE has done so much for Ivalice, and so little for Vana'diel; Vana'diel is just so much more interesting. If they make a more action oriented MMO (and don't make bass-ackwards retarded choices), I'd definitely be interested.

I'm waiting for the announcement of SE's next MMO, which I pray day and night will be more action oriented. The battle system in FFXI, as well as being extremely hard to play when you have less than 5000 gil (trust me, I've tried farming on many occasions) has maded me stop playing.

I can make 5k in less than an hour(I kill tigers and NPC the fangs). I just haven't played lately because I've been feeling sick. I have almost 200K but it's not gonna but things like HQ staves and stuff....

When has 28-29 FPS ever been an acceptable framerate?

And regional servers and maybe a simultaneous launch.

Eh, no thanks. I'm against sharding in general; for the sake of regions/languages I'm especially opposed.

This I agree with, it's simply not right to put one group in an MMO first.

Doesn't mean you can't choose to play on other regional servers, just means the choice is there. Currently, there's just one big clusterfuck and certain new players are immediately at a disadvantage when blindly choosing a server.

You know S-E designed it that way? You know that you couldn't originally choose your own server.

. . . You knew all this, right?

I started playing in October '03 so, yeah, I'm aware of how things were. And, the fact they designed it that way doesn't mean it's shit. They've backtracked on plenty of their other decisions so they're by no means infallible. Regional servers with no enforcement on choice affect no-one, you can choose where you want to play. Just Euros, for example, would have a far greater chance of finding people on at the sime time and be able to achieve more compared to how it was at launch when we were spread everywhere.

Xenophobia and racism are something we really don't suffer from too badly over here in Europe. We shouldn't really have to suffer a restriction on our ability to enjoy a game due to NA or JP shortcomings.

Be honest, what percentage of the Japanese playerbase do you think would have chosen to play on an NA server if they'd been there at launch and what percentage would choose to play on one now if they implemented them? Fact is, nearly every other MMO has regional servers so players can choose their server with the expectation they'll be playing with people in their timezone regardless of race. For me, it's not a, "I don't want to play with damned Yanks" thing, it's more of a, "I bought this game and I'd like to be on a server with people who play predominantly during my core hours". If my, or anyone else's hours of playing change, then I can server transfer if there is a significant impact on my gaming experience. I don't see why this is such a hard concept for people to grasp.

Ultimately it just hurts their subscription numbers because I know many people who have refused to play this and future S-E MMOs if they refuse to implement regional servers.

A simultaneous launch I'm all for but I've had some fun times being invited into JP parties now and again. I like the idea of playing with everyone no matter where they are from. I just wish they could somehow make a better translation tool than the gimped auto-translator we have now. Also give people who can the ability to type in Japanese...instead of just the cop out they have now!
