Would you buy a special edition strategy guide?

Keep in mind, I'm not talking about a Brady Games guide. I'm talking about a huge compendium, similar to the Japanese ones; a collector's edition.

Specifically, I'm talking about one where each expansion would be a separate volume, but still matching, so that you could continue to expand it as each new one came out. It would also include things like story guides, character info, maybe some of the formulas behind gameplay; maps, concept art, and so on.

Personally, I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but I'm curious if others would be so willing, given that SE hasn't released such a thing here (and they do love the monies.)

No guide should ever be printed again after the failure of the Brady Guide. The fact of guides and mmo, is that they will never be able to keep up with the game. I mean for people who just collect thins like this sure it would be nice, but the use would be next to none.

hueg difference. There's no reason an MMO guide would be automatically outdated, if it works in volumes.

Re: Would you buy a special edition strategy guide?

lol, i still have the first one... i've scribbled all over it to update it myself

i find it easier to use then having to go search online. but there comes a time when you just plain run out of places to write on the pages... so a new one would be fun to play with.

Every time a volume is printed it is out of date damn near immediately.

Hardly. Being incomplete and being out of date aren't the same thing.

The sort of collected-volumes guide as stated in your original post... yeah, I'd buy it at the drop of a dime.

Re: Would you buy a special edition strategy guide?

i would because then i can take it with me wherever i go. i dont get internet on the plane, or on long car trips. plus when the army decides to put me on special duties i cant get to 99% of my FFXI resouces. so a guide would be awesome to have in my opinion.

Re: Would you buy a special edition strategy guide?

I have all the guides for all the FF games, its part of teh game, I keep tehm as prestine as I can like the game boxes and discs as I collect all the FF stuff. wheter the FFXI one is outdated or not the one I got is now in a sealed plastic sleeve with the opriginal game disks and expansion disks, all kept tidy and away from dust. I buy them for collecting, but they are also usefull as a quick reference.

Re: Would you buy a special edition strategy guide?

I normally hate strategy guides, because alot of people just use them as a hand holder through out the whole game, and never try and beat it alone, but guild for an MMORPG is a bit different, its more like Wiki, its just alot of useful info crammed into a book. I would buy it, if it was released as you described.

Have you ever purchased any JP guides for FFXI? I have them all and they do a great job keeping up with changes/additions and are absolutely wonderful. Then top it off with great graphics and individual volumes and I'd absolutely DIE to have them in English!

Jarre do you collect other FF collectibles or just the games and guides? I'm absolutely horrible with collecting FF stuff! I've slowed down quite a bit but only because my husband is going to ring my neck if I don't! LOL Also there are just so many fake items out there now and I've gotten ripped off by a few so it makes me a bit leary to buy now.

Wiki should make a book version of their website, I think that would be awesome! =D

Only if it was printed by S-E themselves. I loathe third parties with a passion.

Re: Would you buy a special edition strategy guide?

Feba, are you just posting whatever comes into your head?

My problem with guides isn't the people who write them, but then empty-headed people who read them and cut-and-paste strategy as though what was presented was the only way things get done in the game.

It breeds the "75 Onry" mentality for completing missions and misconceptions about what jobs you need for a win in various situations. I can't tell you the number of times I've seen shouts for the Lamia No. 13 assault that FAILED to include shouting for other jobs that have Dispel abilities/magic aside from RDM and BRD.

Hello people, its time to pull your heads out of your asses - SMN, BLU, SCH and COR and dispel, too, therefore, they are very practical jobs to send into this Assault. Dispel was no longer exclusive to RDM or BRD as of the release of Fenrir back in the Zilart expansion. How behind is your thinking going to be? The information is there on wikis about all jobs and no one reads it, they just read what they're looking for.

See, people would know that, if they bothered to learn anything about other jobs like SMN, Fenny gets an AoE dispel. SCH has Manifestation, again, AoE Dispel. They got that like a month ago and people are still oblivious to what that job can do. COR can pop two consecutive Dark Shots off as per same update, two dispels, I'd say COR is good too.

I feel like sometimes, when I'm in-game I'm the only guy that has bothered to read an update. Meanwhile the drones are just logging on to run to DA, BD or VoS as quickly as possible for the widgets they did bother to read about being able to obtain. If the "point" to FFXI is endgame to you, I would think that knowing what EVERY JOB was capable of would be of interest to you.

Apparently not.
