Jarre do you collect other FF collectibles or just the games and guides? I'm absolutely horrible with collecting FF stuff! I've slowed down quite a bit but only because my husband is going to ring my neck if I don't! LOL Also there are just so many fake items out there now and I've gotten ripped off by a few so it makes me a bit leary to buy now.
To be honest, I didn't think of the Japanese style guides, mainly because we never get things that cool. If they were to be in that type of league I would go for them.

My problem with guides isn't the people who write them, but then empty-headed people who read them and cut-and-paste strategy as though what was presented was the only way things get done in the game.

It breeds the "75 Onry" mentality for completing missions and misconceptions about what jobs you need for a win in various situations. I can't tell you the number of times I've seen shouts for the Lamia No. 13 assault that FAILED to include shouting for other jobs that have Dispel abilities/magic aside from RDM and BRD.

Hello people, its time to pull your heads out of your asses - SMN, BLU, SCH and COR and dispel, too, therefore, they are very practical jobs to send into this Assault. Dispel was no longer exclusive to RDM or BRD as of the release of Fenrir back in the Zilart expansion. How behind is your thinking going to be? The information is there on wikis about all jobs and no one reads it, they just read what they're looking for.

See, people would know that, if they bothered to learn anything about other jobs like SMN, Fenny gets an AoE dispel. SCH has Manifestation, again, AoE Dispel. They got that like a month ago and people are still oblivious to what that job can do. COR can pop two consecutive Dark Shots off as per same update, two dispels, I'd say COR is good too.

I feel like sometimes, when I'm in-game I'm the only guy that has bothered to read an update. Meanwhile the drones are just logging on to run to DA, BD or VoS as quickly as possible for the widgets they did bother to read about being able to obtain. If the "point" to FFXI is endgame to you, I would think that knowing what EVERY JOB was capable of would be of interest to you.

Apparently not.
Sounds abit like my pet peve: Many jobs can fill lots of roles but few players see this. They just assign a role say "Ninja=tank" and forget that they can also DD and elemtental debuff(using gill to buy lots of stars and tools of course!). My least favorite of these are "Job=useless" and "Job=gimp"! The Brady Games guide has something to do with this intially but many people just assinged roles on their own.

I hate Brady games anyway. I refuse to ever buy a guide from them again since every last one I got had mistakes and loswy maps. Usually I just buy guides for the maps in them since I get lost XD

Kinda. I mostly have ideas pop into my head, then I sit on them for a few days before I decide to post them. This is why I tend to post three or four threads in a day, and then nothing for awhile afterwards.

Actually, the idea would include updates at the beginning of every volume, so you could see what has changed. in the period between the previous release and that one.

Re: Would you buy a special edition strategy guide?

I think it would be pretty cool to see some of the japanese guides get translated and moved over to the US. If anything just the books that cover the background and history of Vana'Diel would be well worth it.

Re: Would you buy a special edition strategy guide?

Aside from their coolness value to the fans, I don't really think "official" guides are very useful because they are very rarely as extensive as player-made guides who wish to convey how to specifically pursue a specific course of action in the game.

Sure, it'd be nice if the creators of the game went out of their way to show us how to defeat Absolute Virtue, but we all know how that turned out. If a group of users knew how to do it the same way, I have no doubt that their guide would be much more useful. If SE wants to create some guides as in-depth as FFXIclopedia or something though, then I'd buy them.

Re: Would you buy a special edition strategy guide?

Pai Pai, SE can be very helpful when they want to be. Look at the goblin drink thing, for instance. With AV, they were trying to give us hints, without just telling us.

There's no reason an official guide would just be random hints for things that are supposed to be mysteries.

Re: Would you buy a special edition strategy guide?

Probably not.

The internet seems much more friendly than a physical book. Search functions, able to be kept up to date easier without buying more volumes, user opinions, electronic bookmarks.

Only downside is I'm not sure if I'd take a laptop to the can with me...

Re: Would you buy a special edition strategy guide?

The problem you'll run into with this Feba is that people can't get their minds around the Brady guide.

Heck, from what I recall, there's more than one official FFXI guide released in Japan on Gardening alone. I would love to see some of that stuff get translated.

No, the biggest problem is that people are thinking "Strategy Guide" = "Tells you about how to do missions and lists stats and such onry"; instead of "Oooh shiny".

I'd love to see a newer and fully fleshed out version of the Atlas. I loved all the tidbits they had about the history of the zones and the mobs that inhabited them.

Make it hardcover with all the zones in it and that's a special edition souvenir I would like to get.

Hell, I wish they'd release some of the Vana'diel Fashion books. I want some damn merchandise and art books.

Re: Would you buy a special edition strategy guide?

I'd like a good reference: any kind of guide to refer to if I need to know how to make a certain recipe, where an NPC is, etc.
