So i'm looking to level a new job to 75, I currently have 75 nin, sam, and pld. I'm thinking either war which is currently 53 or thf which is 46. I have gkt 8/8 kat 8/8 and eva 4/4. If i go war, which is what im leaning towards, i'd want to cap axe 8/8 before i start, so i'd need to lower merits in the mentioned combat skills. I already have all the +haste gear for war. Anyone that cares, your thoughts?

Since WAR/DRK/BST/RNG are the only jobs that can use an Axe and as such merit it, you would be unable to raise axe skill until you got one of those jobs to 75 as well as remove 8 of your current merits.

Yes, i'm planning on removing 8 merits, that was part of my question. I'm thinking about removing the 4 evasion and 4 of the katana merits. I believe combat skills can be merited without having a specific job to 75 as long as you have one which allows you to switch to the merit mode. I maxed out great katana when my sam was level 42.

Thats because NIN has GK skill. Since I assume you had NIN leveled to 75 before you leveled SAM, you were able to merit GK before/while you were leveling SAM.

Yes. In order to merit skills of any sort (combat or magic) your current main job MUST be able to use that skill with a minimum of an E rating. For example, I have a 75 BLM. If I was planning on leveling Thief, I could put 8/8 merits into Dagger before I start, because BLM have native dagger skill. On the other hand, I could not put any merits into Sword or Hand-To-Hand, as BLM have absolutely no skill in these categories, despite several swords (most notably biblo-type) are equippable by BLM.

You know, that makes sense... lol Hmmm... so that being said, the direction that would push me would be thief since, if im not mistaken, i should be able to merit dagger. Nin or pld can equip dagger correct?

NIN can use dagger, and even learn Evisceration. Might want to learn that before so you can use it at level 60something with merits.

Lol, so get rid of all katana and keep eva, or get rid of 4 eva and 4 katana? I'm thinking of daggers 8/8 unless someone thinks keeping katana over daggers would be better. It's just fun having weapon fully merited and xp'n from level 45-75.

Well, at level 45 you would only get 4 of the 8 merits calculated in I think... then 5 of them at 50, 6 at 60...

You get all 8 I believe. It's weird, I heard something like that before, but I merited gkt 8/8 when my sam was still like 50 something. I'd increase the merit and then go check sam, and it appeared everytime i increased the gkt merit, my capped gkt skill went up 2. Anyone else see something like this? was i smoking crack?
