They could also change the Great Tree in Windurst into a giant star shaped building. But it wouldn't make any goddamn sense, and it would ruin so many different parts of the storyline that they might as well chuck it out the window.

Seriously, if you don't understand WHY this isn't possible, go do some reading on the history of Vana'diel. It's hard to explain new cities and areas. It would be IMPOSSIBLE to explain a new race. That 'city in the opening movie' has a very rich background story of it's own. It's been around for several years. The fact that you can't even identify it or the people in it should be plenty enough for you to consider your knowledge of the history of Vana'diel too poor to think about this.
