FFXI on PC vs FFXI on PS2
Hello to all PC and PS2 players.
I'd like your opinion on this matter.

I've been playing FFXI for quite some time now. First, when the game came out for 3 months. And again about 3-4 months ago from today's date. Both times I've been playing FFXI on the PC.

However, I'm currently using the cheap starter disc that has no expansion packs. I was planning to buy the expansions back in the '08 collection, but when I looked it up online, I realized the Vana'diel Collection '08 is only for PS2 and Xbox!

So, I was wondering should I buy the Vana'diel Collection '07 + WoTG ($40)
or Vana'diel Collection '08 for PS2 ($30)

Also, I was wondering what other things would I need to play FFXI on the PS2? (Cables and what-not, and keyboard for chatting?) I have the original PS2 btw. (not the new slim one) And how do macros work for the PS2?

Re: FFXI on PC vs FFXI on PS2
First off, I used to play on ps2 until i had the chance to play it on PC. For me, the graphics and the framerate are a really important factor so if your looking for a good visual experience, don't bother with the ps2 version.

Also, it won't cost you only 30 $ in order to be able to play on your console if you don't have the fallowing :

1. PS2 Network Adapter (40$)
2. PS2 Harddrive (90$)
3. USB KEYBOARD (20$)
4. NETWORK CABLE (15$)

I'm not even sure if there's some harddrive left in stores but that's about it.
For the macros, it works exacly like on the PC version. You set them and use the R2 button in order to see the list.

Stay on PC

Re: FFXI on PC vs FFXI on PS2
Stay on the computer. It'll cost you quite a bit to update your Ps2 to the point where the game is playable. The only thing I miss about using the ps2 is the controller, but you can buy usb controllers and adapt those. Cost wise and efficiency wise I say stick to the PC

Re: FFXI on PC vs FFXI on PS2
Glad to see this post, Personally I perfer my PC, I have a USB, PS2 style controller I use to play with, It was easy to set up, and I love using it. At first I didn't want to use it because I thought it was going to be a pain in the ass to set it up and control in game but it actually is much better than the computer, Uhhh as for playing it on a console, Its not bad, but I prefer my PC, I love my laptop alot. But I am not a fan of Xbox personally. Nothing wrong with the system, just not many cool games I suppose. Eh Just me. Anyway I perfer my PC :3

Re: FFXI on PC vs FFXI on PS2
I guess if you have the original you may have the HDD as it was sent in a pack when FFXI roke to the PS2
if not youll need to search EBAY and if you cant find a ps2 HDD/network adapter on ebay your out of luck they stopped producing them a while back when they went slim.

What i did was bough the expansion pack for PS the 08 collection for use on my ps3 once i had my reg codes attached to my account i just DL'd the files for COP/WOTG from a torrent file. FFXI is universal as long as your codes are registered and the files are installed.

So i suggest saving the 530$ it will cost for a PS3, or 330-400$ for an xbox 360
It will cost you 30$ and X amount of time for DL's and Install hope that helps

Re: FFXI on PC vs FFXI on PS2
There's no question that you're better off playing on PC.
Not only does this grant you access to some handy UI mods/windower... which are somewhat controversial, but freely available and extremely useful nonetheless- but the game is graphically much more appealing, as the PS2 version runs at a low resolution where everything is extremely jaggy, and also has framerate issues in some parts.

On the PC version, assuming you've got a good PC, you can also edit some files to increase resolution on textures and stuff, making it look even better than the graphical configuration settings initially allow.
And of course as others have mentioned, you can purchase a PS2 USB controller adapter and use it to play the game on your PC, or even use any wireless PS3 controller for that purpose with no additional requirements.

This is true? I thought the graphics were the same on all systems. News to me.

Re: FFXI on PC vs FFXI on PS2
They use the same models & textures and all that, but on the PS2 you're playing at a standard TV's resolution, on a standard TV. To simulate this, play the game at 640x480 on a PC, with lowered gamma, and squint really hard so that it's blurred.

It looks okay, especially if it's the first version you see. Mainly, the GUI gets really, really cramped.

I've seen the PC edition at 1024 by 768 with the bumpmapping turned on. Looks nearly the same to me minus a few jaggies I hardly notice most of the time when playing the PS2 edition. The main issue for the OP is basiclly "can you get the right hardware?" and getting the right PS2 hardware is pretty hard since it wasn't too common in the US to begin with...

Re: FFXI on PC vs FFXI on PS2
There are 3rd-party mod kits you can buy to connect a hard drive to the slim PS2. I don't know how well any of them work or anything. But unless you've already got the slim PS2 and the hard drive anyway, it might be cheaper to just get a 360 or something. I honestly have no idea how much any of this costs right now.

Re: FFXI on PC vs FFXI on PS2
Just sell your old TVs, dvds you don't watch, maybe some blood and or sperm/eggs and refit yourself with a xbox 360, the vana 08 colloection and a big new HDTV!!! at least a 24'' or bigger. Also hook it all together either thru the VGA cable set or HDMI. Graphics, sound and all around experience will be better than PC or PS2/3. Protip: It also makes your PC availible if you need to look something up instead of risking it and using windower...but its really not detectable

Get with the times! See life in HD!(Well vanadiel) lol

There are two versions of the PS2 slim. The first one had the IDE pinouts in tact on the PS2 motherboard so if you weren't chicken with a saudering iron you could connect the HDD that way, but no pinouts...no HDD...
