I'd like your opinion on this matter.
I've been playing FFXI for quite some time now. First, when the game came out for 3 months. And again about 3-4 months ago from today's date. Both times I've been playing FFXI on the PC.
However, I'm currently using the cheap starter disc that has no expansion packs. I was planning to buy the expansions back in the '08 collection, but when I looked it up online, I realized the Vana'diel Collection '08 is only for PS2 and Xbox!
So, I was wondering should I buy the Vana'diel Collection '07 + WoTG ($40)
or Vana'diel Collection '08 for PS2 ($30)
Also, I was wondering what other things would I need to play FFXI on the PS2? (Cables and what-not, and keyboard for chatting?) I have the original PS2 btw. (not the new slim one) And how do macros work for the PS2? For me, the graphics and the framerate are a really important factor so if your looking for a good visual experience, don't bother with the ps2 version.
Also, it won't cost you only 30 $ in order to be able to play on your console if you don't have the fallowing :
1. PS2 Network Adapter (40$)
2. PS2 Harddrive (90$)
3. USB KEYBOARD (20$)
4. NETWORK CABLE (15$)
I'm not even sure if there's some harddrive left in stores but that's about it.
For the macros, it works exacly like on the PC version. You set them and use the R2 button in order to see the list.

It'll cost you quite a bit to update your Ps2 to the point where the game is playable. The only thing I miss about using the ps2 is the controller, but you can buy usb controllers and adapt those. Cost wise and efficiency wise I say stick to the PC . | | ::Quote Selected:: | | The following user says "Thank You" to mw21 for above post: | | | 02-25-2008, 07:43 AM | #4 (permalink) | | Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: Winston,GA Posts: 643 Style: Light - Version 6 My Mood: Thanks: 42 Thanked 22x in 20 Posts Gil: 4,598 Bank: 10,253 Total Gil: 14,851 Donate | Re: FFXI on PC vs FFXI on PS2 also the thin PS2 models aren't comatable with FFXI...so you need an old fat boy too! | | ::Quote Selected:: | | 02-25-2008, 08:02 AM | #5 (permalink) | | Junior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: Iowa Posts: 477 Style: Dark - Version 5 My Mood: Thanks: 18 Thanked 10x in 6 Posts Gil: 3,561 Bank: 4,588 Total Gil: 8,148 Donate | Re: FFXI on PC vs FFXI on PS2 Neither!!! At first I didn't want to use it because I thought it was going to be a pain in the ass to set it up and control in game but it actually is much better than the computer, Uhhh as for playing it on a console, Its not bad, but I prefer my PC, I love my laptop alot. But I am not a fan of Xbox personally. Nothing wrong with the system, just not many cool games I suppose. Eh Just me. Anyway I perfer my PC :3 | | ::Quote Selected:: | | The following user says "Thank You" to S h i r o m a d o s h i for above post: | | | 03-06-2008, 05:52 AM | #7 (permalink) | | Sexy Taru RDM Join Date: Jan 2008 Posts: 495 Style: Light - Version 6 My Mood: Thanks: 23 Thanked 35x in 30 Posts Gil: 24,381 Bank: 239 Total Gil: 24,620 Donate | Re: FFXI on PC vs FFXI on PS2 I guess if you have the original you may have the HDD as it was sent in a pack when FFXI roke to the PS2
if not youll need to search EBAY and if you cant find a ps2 HDD/network adapter on ebay your out of luck they stopped producing them a while back when they went slim.
What i did was bough the expansion pack for PS the 08 collection for use on my ps3 once i had my reg codes attached to my account i just DL'd the files for COP/WOTG from a torrent file. FFXI is universal as long as your codes are registered and the files are installed.
So i suggest saving the 530$ it will cost for a PS3, or 330-400$ for an xbox 360
It will cost you 30$ and X amount of time for DL's and Install hope that helps Melee RDM since /04

Not only does this grant you access to some handy UI mods/windower... which are somewhat controversial, but freely available and extremely useful nonetheless- but the game is graphically much more appealing, as the PS2 version runs at a low resolution where everything is extremely jaggy, and also has framerate issues in some parts.
On the PC version, assuming you've got a good PC, you can also edit some files to increase resolution on textures and stuff, making it look even better than the graphical configuration settings initially allow.
And of course as others have mentioned, you can purchase a PS2 USB controller adapter and use it to play the game on your PC, or even use any wireless PS3 controller for that purpose with no additional requirements. | | ::Quote Selected:: | | The following user says "Thank You" to Tsikuro for above post: | | | 03-07-2008, 04:08 AM | #10 (permalink) | | M e l n a Join Date: Mar 2008 Location: Hell Posts: 36 Style: Light - Version 6 Thanks: 0 Thanked 2x in 2 Posts Gil: 2,405 Bank: 0 Total Gil: 2,405 Donate | Re: FFXI on PC vs FFXI on PS2 Originally Posted by Armando | | Also, the PS2 version's graphics look horrible. | This is true? To simulate this, play the game at 640x480 on a PC, with lowered gamma, and squint really hard so that it's blurred.
It looks okay, especially if it's the first version you see. Mainly, the GUI gets really, really cramped. Ellipses on Fenrir There is no rush. If you're not willing to take your time, don't be surprised when no one wants to give you much of theirs.
