hey all! first off, this is my first post, so sorry if this is in the wrong topic area. i know there have been other posts similar to this, but they were all pretty old so i figured i'd start fresh. so, back on topic. i got a brand new computer w/ windows vista and downloaded the vista compatible Playonline viewer, then installed the trial version of FFXI. Now whenever i try to start the playonline viewer and update it i get the POL-1160 error. i've tried turing all the firewalls on and off and setting them to allow both ffxi and playonline, but nothing has worked yet. any help would be greatly appreciated because i really want to play final fantasy again. thanks |

I'm not entirely sure what the 1160 error actually is, but to get FFXI to run in Vista, you will want to disable the UAC and also set POL to "Run as Administrator." I'm feeling incredibly lazy today so I don't have links for you, but it shouldn't be terribly hard to find how to do that with Google or something. If that doesn't work then I don't know what the issue is. You could tell us what the error says instead of the number code that would be more helpful. I do use Vista and it works fine for me, I would just guess you need to tweak it a bit.

Hi there, I have exactly the same trouble as "gecken". Error code: POL-1160 Network is busy, or there are connection problems. Please try again later or verify that cables, networking devices, and network settings are properly configured. I too have the Vista OS. I purchased FFXI about a year ago, and have been spending that year trying to get access to a credit card, so I haven't played it as of yet. I originally installed Playonline on XP, and had no problems at all. I now have Vista on a new computer, and I have followed the necessary steps (downloading compatible POL). When I start POL it tells me to update to the latest version - which ends up with the POL-1160 error. I have retried at different times of the day (as it says network is busy), and I have turned off all firewall/anti- programs. Does anyone have any useful links to a troubleshooter guide, or a solution to this problem? It would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance! EDIT: Btw, the latest version of POL is 1.18.00 correct? Why does it want to update if it is the latest version? UAC is already off, and right-clicking and choosing "Run as Administrator" doesn't make any difference. I even set the compatibility to Win XP Service pack 2 and checked the "Disable Desktop composition" and "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" as a desperation, but alas, nothing. Phone Support: PlayOnline Information Center (858) 790-7529 (PLAY) Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 6:00 pm Pacific Time (excluding weekends and holidays) Web Chat Support: https://secure.playonline.com/supportus/index.html Try the web chat support, I know some people that have had better luck with that than calling. Unfortunately, it is the weekend and I don't know if the webchat service follows the same times as the call in service. Sorry I can't be of more help than that.

Thank you for that information TheGrandMom. I have searched on a few forums on the internet regarding the "POL 1160". A great few date back to 2005, and some from just last year. All of them stating roughly the same problems as I am experiencing now. Many responses to these, suggest to just keep a cool head and click "Retry" often. I honestly do not consider that a definite fix to this situation. When I get the POL 1160 error, I select Network Connection Information, and here it has my IP Address, Default Router Address and UPnP. My IP and Default Router have exactly the same number, except that the Default Router is short of 2 numbers. (I am not that knowledgeable with this sort of thing, so I do not know if this is a problem or not). eg. IP = XX.XXX.XXX.XXX DR= XX.XXX.XXX.X I will try to contact Web Chat Support on Monday, and in the mean time I will try a reinstallation of the Vista Compatible Playonline. EDIT: I just read something on another forum about the whole POL problem. I am in the European region, and I have been downloading the Playonline US version!! I have found the EU version of Playonline, and hopefully this one will make the problems disappear. (Crosses fingers) http://dl.square-enix.co.jp/poleu/setup.exe - Playonline EU version 2nd EDIT: After the installation of the EU version of POL, I managed to get a different error. POL 0019. This one states that it can not connect to the server. I clicked retry, and received the 1160 again. So there still seems to be a problem with either my Vista configuration or my Network Settings. Seeing as people have had FFXI running with Vista, I would just like to know how, so then I can change some settings or whatnot. Thanks again. Last edited by acis_1986; 02-23-2008 at 09:14 AM. |

I have finally had Playonline achieve its update!! I contacted web chat support and followed a troubleshooter guide for port forwarding, firewall adjusting, manual port allowance and clean rebooting. None of that worked. I was then told to contact my Internet Provider to "unblock" the ports for Playonline/FFXI. I was told that no ports were blocked and the problem was not on the IP's end. So after much frustration and tweaking, I came up with an idea. Start the computer in Safe mode with Networking! Lo and Behold it works!! I do not know if this works with just my Vista PC, but I think it is worth a try for anyone having the connection issue of POL-1160. EDIT: In the msconfig I turned off nearly all services, including Microsoft services. The ones I had left one were - DFS Replication DHCP Client DNS Client Group Policy Client PnP-X IP Bus Enumerator IP Helper, Server TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Network Connections Network List Service Network Location Awareness Network Store Interface Service Remote Access Auto Connection Manager Remote Access Connection Manager Remote Registry Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) UPnP Device Host Windows Connect Now - Config Registrar Web Client I hope this helps. Wow, a lot of messing around to achieve the end result! Glad you finally figured it out. Kudos to you for persevering through all that!

I just got off the phone with POL after many long waits. The secret seems to be that you must delete all of the Final Fantasy games on your computer before attempting to load this patch. You must start with the most recent version first. So if you have Wings of the Goddess this needs to be deleted before any of the others. If you mess up, do a system restore to prior to attempting file deletion and start over or you will have problems during re-install. Once all of the files are off of your system then you can do the Vista patch download and then reinstall all of the programs and then do system update. Whew. Hope it all works ______________________________ Ack. All went well until I got to the core FFXI program. Vista is ignoring my instructions to delete. Any suggestions?
