Updating isn't security. The reason Firefox is so secure, besides the whole intergeek revolution, is because you're going to get more results with IE. They claimed Firefox has more vulnerabilities, but there's nobody interested in taking advantage of them.

I think the last time I had issues with viruses was on my second machine. Your browser is only as vulnerable as you allow it to be.

Well really there is only so much we can do. We really need people that put out the web browsers to keep there product as safe and reliable as possible. Otherwise anything we do wont really matter.

No, the reason Fx is more secure is because major issues are fixed and updated quickly. Other security vulnerabilities are not as big a deal. Fx is something like 15-20% of the browser market, and you can bet your ass that if it wasn't secure there would be more than a few sites exploiting it's vulnerabilities instead of IE. Hell, look at polls on geeky sites, ones about games or computers, they generally show the majority uses firefox, which would make it at least as much of a target as IE on those sites; which Somepage surely was.

The real reason Firefox is more secure than IE is because it's Open Source.

They are still pushing exploit patches for IE6 via Windows Update, at least for Windows 2000 users; I see them come through fairly regularly. It's kind of important to keep IE reasonably updated even if you don't use it, as it's used as a backend for a lot of programs as well (It's possible to hack the registry to make the system use firefox here as well, but that breaks some things, notably Windows Update and Automatic Updates).

I don't like the idea of loading a lot of plugins into Firefox, but maybe I'll look into it. I haven't been really satisfied with any browser's behavior on the whole (I got in on the whole Internet thing as Gopher was beginning to go out of style ) but the one I've had the best luck with on the whole was Konqueror, particularly with the "Disable window.open" box checked in options. There are some architectural similarities to IE here, with the embedded rendering engine and all, but nothing like ActiveX. Biggest problem I ever had with it was image format issues from a bad Qt build, which was a rather interesting learning experience (For a while, Qt had a bug where it wouldn't recognize jpeg 6b unless it was named libjpeg6b.so; libjpeg.so would be assumed as 6a. Instant crash rendering a jpeg file). People who actually use a distribution should have no such difficulties.

You mean never open links in new windows? There is a way to do this in firefox, but I forget what it is right now. I know I never have things open in new windows, since I hate them (<3 tabs)

Believe it or not, some people don't like tabs.

I know, I still distrust this friend of mine that says he hates them.
