When should I buy the expansions?

I play on two accounts, one on my xbox and one on my pc. The PC version is the basic Rise of the Ziliart, and the xbox account has the treasures of whatever.

Thing is,when should I start looking into chains and treasures for my pc vers? I basically re subbed over the week and i play a WHM and WAR together. When should I worry about buying expansions? Will I be missing out on much without them for a while?

Re: When should I buy the expansions?

Honestly, you want Chains of Promathia and Rise of Zilart more than Aht Urhgan and Wings of the Goddess. The later two are more for high level content, and the first two are for low to middle range I guess. Also RoZ contain areas you will level in. CoP has fun thins in it

Re: When should I buy the expansions?

These two links should give you a good idea of what you will be missing out on without the expansions:

http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/promathia/index.html

http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/ahturhgan/index.html

If you had to choose between the two then I would suggest Treasures of Aht Urhgan. I've been playing for half a year and I've barely touched the Chains of Promathia content. ToAU's content is geared more towards high level players, but it does introduce Blue Mage, Corsair, and Puppetmaster. Al Zahbi is a great central location for crafters since every guild (execpt fishing) can be found there. Another thing noteworthy about ToAU is access to a Mog Locker where (for a fee) you can store 30 more items in your Mog House.

As for when you should get the expansions, well like I said, I've barely touched CoP and have liked ToAU for the reasons above. Bibiki Bay is one of the locations introduced with CoP and I've heard about people exping there, but I've gotten WHM to 38 and haven't stepped one foot in there yet. So I'll say this, take some time to browse the links above and see what you like. (If, for example, you think Blue Mage is awesome and have to urge to play it as soon as you can, then you should grab ToAU before you reach lvl 30.)

Well, in the case of the PC and Xbox version, the expansions just all come together anyway. It's true that Treasures of Aht'Urghan offers no real low level content, but that's not true of Wings of Goddess. Campaign itself is higher level content, as could be the missions, but I can EXP on worms in North Gustaberg until level 8, hop in the Cavernous Maw there, pop out in North Gustaberg [s] and EXP on the worms there all the way to level 14. That cut out half the pain to doing the dune. Grauberg and Fort Karugo-Narugo offer level 30ish mobs to EXP on.

And some campaign ops are so simple a player of any level can do them.

The only real problem with a newer player in WotG is its hard to appreciate the signifigance of what's going on. Doing the Rank Missions from FFXI and RoZ content shed a bit of light on the story you'll see here and you'll get more out the story for waiting.

Re: When should I buy the expansions?

An important thing to remember is expansions have to be installed in order. Meaning, you can't have Wings of the Goddess without Treasures of Aht Urghan, and you can't have the aforementioned Treasures without Chains of Promathia.

Re: When should I buy the expansions?

Unless you want to unlock a job that one of the expansions has, you won't need either Promathia or WoTG for awhile. Zilart is honestly a given and to go without it would put you through a lot of headaches in your lower levels. ToAU, while it only has zones for 55+ in regards to leveling, it's pretty much the new Jeuno in that everyone gathers and shouts there for things, but it's definitely something you can pass up for awhile.

in other MMOs yes, but I have messed with this myself, and you can skip expansions

if you really wanted to, you could have just FFXI and WotG installed and nothign else, or FFXI RoZ and ToAU and not CoP

Re: When should I buy the expansions?

I don't think it's true that you have to get the expansions in order. There's little direct linkage (aside from RotZ -> CoP) and no outright dependancy between them; that's sort of the whole point of the expansion design.

Anyway, RotZ and WotG are the ones that have low-level content more likely to see actual use. ToAU is basicially where all the high-levels go; if Blue Mage, Corsair, and Puppetmaster hold no interest for you, you can wait on this if need be. As for CoP... well, while you can do stuff related to it starting at level 30, it's the most optional of all the expansions, in part because you have to jump through three dungeon-sized hoops just to get started on the majority of its content, in part because it's the only expansion that didn't introduce any new jobs. -- Pteryx

Re: When should I buy the expansions?

I would honestly, to me just buy, the Vana'diel collection for like 20$ and not really worry about it. Sense it comes with all of them, I would see really no threat as to why you couldn't buy them all. I did, and I think I am going to LOVE it!

Re: When should I buy the expansions?

I started out with the Vana'diel collection too, and honestly at this point, I'm glad it saved me from having to buy them all seperately later on. I would have suggested doing that, but since you've already got the game installed...I'd probably go with Chains of Promathia if I were in your position. It's been one of the most useful to me so far.

The fact remains, however, that CoP introduced a lot more lower level content than ToAU did. Much of the CoP content has level caps on it in the 30's, 40's, etc. And while the extra jobs and the mog locker (which can actually hold up to 80 items) are nice, that's kinda all that ToAH will offer any character under 50-55ish. I mean the guilds are nice, but guild NPCs get taken prisoner from Besieged far too often and I end up just going to the actual guild anyway.

Either way, you'll want them both in the end. This becomes very true when you do finally get to about level 55 because you'll exp in ToAH areas almost exclusively for the rest of the grind. And CoP has an interesting story and many challenges for groups to undertake.

Re: When should I buy the expansions?

With the set of RoZ, CoP, and ToAU, there's really no reason to choose among those ... you NEED RoZ (if anybody levels someplace other than Kazham for 25-30, I don't know about it) and then there's no reason to not get the other two as well. As for the original game in that package, you can probably just ignore it.

True, but like Pteryx said, CoP is the most optional out of all of them. But neither really come into play much until level 30+ (with the exception of the Qufim Island cutscene).

As Kailea said, not true. I have Wings installed on PS2 without Treasures. For a long time I had Treasures on PC but no Chains. Works just fine.
