Duo and Trio options in past areas?

Just wondering if anyone out there has Duo'd or Trio'd for exp in the Past Areas and whether there's any real difference/advantage in going to the past versus regular methods in the present? I haven't done much running around in the past yet (still working on lvling my WHM to 75), and I duo/trio a lot with friends. I am always looking for ways to speed things up a bit...

Thanks for any info you guys can share ^^
