I'm not sure if any of you have been following this on Alla or anything, but this link caught my eye and the sheer "What the hell is wrong with these people?" has kept me interested.

So it seems a good bunch of people have had relics dropped, gil stolen, and accounts transferred by someone else.

Why do they do it? I don't understand. These people have had the $25 world transfer service done on their own credit card without their authorization, and they can't go back to their own server for 90 days. S/E, as usual, is less than helpful. All the security in the world doesn't seem to be enough protection for these "leet haxorz" or w/e the hell they call themselves.

Really makes me angry to think about all the stupidity and bitching that goes on between people who play this game. I hope they can all get their stuff straightened out.

Exactly. And if you do trust them, be prepared to get your ass kicked for it. I'll admit I've shared my account info with others, but I wouldn't recommend it, and it's somewhat like leaving a $100 bill on the street. If no one picks it up, sweet. You're not expecting it to stay there, though.

Well yeah I think it's dumb, but this whole thing makes me wonder how easily someone who doesn't give out their shit could get hacked. Let's say Taj, this amazing hacker, someday decides he doesn't like me. I've never given out my password to anyone, it's not the same as my other passwords, and not even my husband knows it.

Now, with the hacking skills he (and countless other kids on the internet) has, who's to say my information really IS safe?

And another question nagging me is, "Why can't S/E do something to fix this!" Why do so many people lose all their years of hard work because S/E refuses to help you if your shit gets stolen? If you go to the cops because your wallet was stolen, they don't just tell you, "Tough shit." Even though the case is probably futile, they at least look into it.

It still just angers me, and it worries me, because although I've never given out any information and I don't download unknown programs onto my computer, I still can't be sure my shit is safe, even with additional virus, spyware, and firewall protection. :/

My friend on remora got hacked too. they didnt drop any of his rare.ex shit, but took all his gil and valueable gear.

He said he didnt give his info to anyone he didnt trust. I know the ppl he gave his info to so I know they didnt do it.

Omni: yes, naturally a program that doesn't even fucking use the internet would have a nice easy way in for any random hacker that decided he wanted to steal an account, and it would be very simple to handpick a user for that. And nobody would've noticed this before, and the people that actually make the Windower wouldn't have taken advantage of it when a significant portion of the community started using Windower, but instead would go on to CONTINUE TO IMPROVE AND KEEP THE PROGRAM WORKING.


How about you just use some logic-- not to mention the already explained method.

Ok, first things first. The vast majority of 'amazing hackers' aren't. They just knew how to trick people out of information.

99.9% of 'my character was stolen' was just as everyone else here said, they gave people their information. The other little bit were not directed attacks, no one in particular was targeted.

All the technical protection in the world does nothing against things you asked for.

Yeah, I agree it's dumb to share your shit with anyone. Like I said, my husband doesn't even know my password. And he's just the type to get a grudge against me and delete my characters, etc. He's gone into my e-mail accounts before to snoop on me, and delete messages that came from men, EVEN IF THEY WERE BUSINESS RELATED. Yeah, he's a fucking nutjob.

That's neither here nor there, though, I've learned not to give out my information with anybody, and that includes even family. I've been fucked by family enough times to know that you can't even trust them.

Aksyanni, if you release your info to anyone, leave your PC unprotected, and so on, it's your fault. If you don't, you should be safe, unless someone either hacks into POL's servers (and you can bet your ass they'd probably be arrested for that), or tries a brute force method (I highly doubt this would work with FFXI). also might I recommend therapy.
