Well you could have different items for different play times that do just about the same thing.

Lets say the base is +EXP. All the items have +EXP, but the first year item is just +EXP, second has say +1 STR, third has +1 str and +10 Fire resistance or something.

That way, the players that have played longer get something special, but everyone gets the 'main' stat. It does seem fair to me.

The appreciation events were never based purely on playtime, nor were rewards given out as such. I think SE will give all players a chance to get this ring and that this ring will become an annual event reward for this event. I mean, what better way to show appreciation for your players then to give them a major, if not short lived, boost to one of the most boring parts of the game.

As a reply to the issue of a possible reward based on play time, the easier (and better) way would be to determine playtime by way of how long the account has been active (and payed for), not nessesarily how long the player's been logged in. This would be total cumulative time, not "starting over each time the player took a break and came back".

So, for example, say Player A activated an account in Jan 04, played for 3 months, took a 2 month break (deactivated the account), then played again for another 5 months. His total time would be 8 months, because only 8 months would have been payed for. The player could have only 1 day or the full 8 months of playtime logged on his character; either way, SE sees that Player A has 8 months active time on the account, so that's what they base it on.

That way, the account itself is what's important, not /playtime.
